my daughter and a friend went out on a canoe from the surf cafe end of beach and were follwed by a shark my daughter was crying and when she got back to beach the man who rented her the canoe told her to 'shush' im sure it was a one off incident but it just shows how we need to be a bit careful when in the sea :o
-
are you sure it was sharks, the dolphins are about in the bay?
-
I have been told of someone seeing sharks off Olu Beach. They were swimming :o
Quite possibly a shark but not a killer one.

I would love to see the Dolphins in the bay and to be honest to see sharks would be pretty good , they are hardly likely to 'Great Whites'!...this is their home after all.

There are 1000000 times more sharks killed by people than people killed by sharks each year.
There ARE great whites in the med, but are more common around Sicily.
The likelihood of being attacked by a shark is very remote.
What was seen was probably a dolphim.

You do on occasion get sharks coming into the bay. A couple of years ago there was one in the local newspaper but cant remmeber what type. There is a stuffed one above one of the fish restaurants in Fethiye. But never heard of anyone being attacked.

There was a spoof article put out last year evidently - by a Ukraine newspaper. I think they were mischief making but it must have scared a few people at the time:

two weeks ago i thought I saw dolphins off of Red Island. I tried to point them out the other Pookies on board, but all said I'd had too many Efes. I remain convinced they were there....

Kizilda Island is Red Island. They have a restaurant on this Island which is highly recommended. We had a lovely meal there.

all right some comments from a local guy.....i am a scuba diver and love sharks and has never seen a shark underwater even i dived every possible place that i could see them......on the other hand yes we do have sharks in turkey like there is a shark in 7 seas of the world. you possibly could have seen one shark but that is always very rare to see one.
i became 29 last monday and in my long long long life only seen 3 sharks around fethiye when i was fishing.
dont worry about sharks, they wont attack you as we dont have the dangerous ones around turkey...
-
Thanks Ytokgoz, just hope nobody comes back on and says different.:P

there was a 5 metre 700 kilo shark caught in fethiye gulf area in the spring this year, caught by local fishermen and displayed in the fish market before being taken of to izmir i think.
the most dangerous fish arround at the moment i think is a veriety of puffer fish known locally as balloon fish. i have caught a few of them now this year and last.arround the 2 kilo mark.
they are not native to the med and are coming up from the indian ocean. apparently due to water temp getting warmer. when i caught a few last year i wasnt sure of identification and took them to the fish market and was told in no uncertain terms that if you eat them ur dead! further research i did on the internet said their toxin is 30,ooo times stronger than cyanide and on average 300 people a year in japan die from them due to souchi chefs getting it wrong.
