Ive never grown bananas before, but my tree has just started growing a pod of them, how do you know when to pick them, obviously before the local kids spot them, and where abouts do you chop them off, at the pod,or from where it starts sprouting out of the tree. Alan

All will reveal its self. If you are lucky the pod will open to reveal green hand of Muz they should grow and turn ripe, yellow, Muz colour. Then you will see where to cut them. Check the cut in the market. You need luck.
Good luck
alan.

Terry's name appeared on someone else's reply on a different topic. He really is a traitor, disguising himself as other people! :o
Well done on the bananas Alan - they look great. :)
Julie (NOT Terry!) :D

i like the look of the very yellow (tubourg flavoured??) nana's in the background :D

Hi Terry, when the pod drops off cut the bananas from the tree and lay on the ground to turn yellow.

alan we had a banana tree, which became six for about 3yrs ,until we got fed up with it moving and being as big as our villa.took some cutting down, like a triffid
when the fruit is ripe you chop them off as near to the last of the bunch ,they take a while to ripen,or if they are big enough put them somewhere dark.
watch out for the thick syrup it attracts all the insects
-
Thanks Puma, Scot, how long do i lay on the ground for before i turn yellow, and Laurie, that tuborg flavoured one is an umbrella, you can try eating it if you want, lol. Alan

Terry is female. She was administrator (I think) when the forum was set up. Her ghost is apparently haunting the site. Which is a bit of a surprise since she is alive and well on her own Turkey website.

You can`t keep a good Terry down :D:D

Great Bananas!
But seriously, if you pick them ( The whole "Hand" - just before they go yellow ) you MUST NOT lay them on the ground to ripen. Well, at least here in Turkey.
Hang them up in the semi - shade.
Putting them on the ground is an open invitation to every fruit - eating critter for kilometers around to come and feast. You Will be invaded. Your neighbours will not be pleased. Unless they like Ants, Wasps etc!
Farmer.

and dont put them in the fruit bowl with other fruit

This was told to me by a Turk & it works. When the Bananas appear to start turning a lighter green, cut the bunch off and place in a black bag with a light coloured apple, not red or dark green. Place the bag on the floor in a darkened room allowing air to get into the bag, but not allowing the light to get in. check every few days and you will see your bananas ripen, 7 to 14 days should do it, depending on the lightness of the green when you put them into the bag.

And with so much going on at the moment
"Keep em peeled"

I always put bananas in my fruit bowl with avocados They ripen the avocados really quickly.

Snowtop has it spot on.
