Title: Downloading videos/dvd's from shareware

I normally stream programmes from Surf the Channel (mainly Megavideo) and other shareware  but am getting fed up with them buffering and the the time take to watch.  Is there a good free system you can use to download to the computer (or independent hard drive) to watch them in your own time or do I need to subscribe to one of the systems that comes up when you click the download button on these sites?
