Following two retinal detachment operations this year I had my first cataract operation three weeks ago. Although there are some post-operative complications, and I certainly shan't be driving anywhere this year (and therefore not picking up speeding fines), the eye specialist I saw (-ish) today has cleared me to travel to Turkey for my planned 8 week stay starting in October. Brilliant. Insurance costs, once I have declared all my ailments, are astronomical of course, but never mind. I hear there is a very good eye hospital in Izmir if I get into any more trouble, and I can have my second cataract operation when I get back to Bristol.
I haven't booked our return flights yet but the best I have found is THY Dalaman-Istanbul-Heathrow (361TL per person) followed by National Express to Bristol. Unless any of you have other ideas.

Excellent stuff Colwyn. I particularly like the possibility of THY followed by National Express. Driving does tend to get in the way of enjoying their free booze.

There is now an Eye Hospital in Fethiye(Karacula) Seems they can deal with many aspects of eye surgery. It is called Kartal Goz (Eagle Eye) :) 8) _

Colwyn I had two retinal detachment operations last year here in Turkey and can definately recommend the Professor/doctor in Bursa. Hopefully, though you wont have to use his services.

Interesting to hear that you had 2 ops last year. I had my first op on the 13th of Feb, and the second on the 13th of May. After the second the consultant told me that it wasn't that unusual for age-related detachments (rather than injury-related) to come close together in pairs. I wish he had told me that earlier as I was beginning to think that I would be getting detachments every three months until I eventually went blind. Actually the op every three months thing is starting to come true because my first cataract op was on the 13th of August. My second one will have to wait until I get back from Turkey. So probably in about three months. What's the betting that it will be 13th December?
