Apart from seeing them or standing on them, how would you know if you had scorpions in your house.?Do they leave droppings like mice or any other such clues?

If you have neighbours who have chickens it is a good idea to let them into your garden occasionally as they kill scorpions and eat them. The chickens are not hurt by scorpions.  :)

Scorpions will enter your house where there are pipes and it is a good idea to make sure that the wall is blocked off around the pipe. They will also drop onto the roof or balcony from overhanging trees.I have only seen two scorpions in twenty years out in Turkey.

If you are bitten by one apply an ice pack and head for the doctor. The sting can cause breathing problems for some people.

Chickens are a good thing to have as a pet to clear the garden if you can.

Pookie,

How long you been in Uzumlu?
We are buying a plot and building villa (hopefully if all goes well)
We have been all over Turkey and fell in love (my wife) with village, people seem so friendly.

Have you any advice!!!!

Buying a plot in Uzumlu...building a villa...any advice..?

Yes

Buy nothing until the land has been checked out by a solicitor appointed by you, and don't think builders are all the same. If you get the land checked out and find a builder rather than someone who thinks they are, you will avoid potentially the most stressful time of your life  :)

Oops sorry I'm not Pookie :D Good luck with it.

No, I've got far more bumps that you have !

Honey bee - had our house in Uzumlu almost four years now....sadly not out there enough (stuck in Cambridge working most of the time !).  As Scunner says, research research research......send me an email if a chat would help.  Good luck !  Get it all right, and you will love it.

I'm not entirely sure you have more bumps than me Pooks  :)

I'm also disappointed I missed the obvious joke about builders and scorpions  ;)

Is it just Uzumlu that is prone to scorpions, do we need to look out for them in Calis as well? Also are they very big the ones you get in Uzumlu?

In 5 years of living in Calis and holidays before and since, I've never seen a scorpion. Snakes yes but no scorpions.

I holidayed 13 times in Hisaronu, Kaya and Karagozler.  Now we have lived here for over 2 years in Uzumlu, haven't seen a scorpion at all.  I look all the time because I am curious to see one (ONE only please...).  I think you're more likely to see them in quieter areas (near the trees and rocks).  But, having said that, one walked straight past our table in a busy restaurant garden recently, spotted by someone else, -it had legged it by the time he told me.

Rindi, pop over to ours early evening and sit by the pool.....they crawl out of the stone wall around the garden......we see them regularly :(  (also Ottoman vipers in the river bed running through the olive grove.... :o

Thanks Pookie.  Can you imagine your neighbours watching me sitting there at dusk.  LOL!!!

I would love one of those ultra violet lights that make them glow.  It might be quite revealing to aim it at our wall and see what really IS lurking there.  But, with so many pets, there's a chance (I suppose) that they have high tailed it to the hills......

no need for ultra violet lights.....we have glow worms too !  they light up the wall like beautiful little fairy lights......oh, wish we were there.....:(

We have had 3 really big spiders in the house over the past 10 days, the last one was 'Huge', I really am not exaggerating it was massive, but still Stuart chose to pick it up and I had to open the window...bla bla bla......  each one that has run into the lounge has been bigger each time, I am dreading to see the size of the next one.....and our cat is frightened to death of them.:D
