Title: Rip off
Post by: lance on September 26, 2009, 12:47:09 PM
For the first time in my life i had to wait for my cold starter to be cooked ,well thats a first nothing to do with me being a chef but come on Prawn Cocktail your having a larf, undoubtedly the worst one i have ever had ,one of the smallest and dearest 12tl and they didn't even cool them properly ,and before all the fans of Guvens start having a go at me .
no they were not busy they had plenty of staff and dogs running around ,talking about dogs if people dont like dogs or are frightened of them , why dont the owners chain the dogs up or or put them in an enclosure  .:-\

Not blaming the dogs its the owners if they know someone doesnt like dogs they should move the dog else where ,and it is a german shepard you are talking about ,and yes did speak to carol it was her who told me about the prawn cocktail .

I don't suppose you were dining alone?  Mayb you were waiting for your guests starters as well eh?  It is right and proper that the whole table eat at the same time.

As far as the dogs are concerned, Dani is one of the most pleasant and friendly dogs I have come across. If any visitors to the restaurant are afraid or don't like dogs, a quick word with Carole or Guven would soon sort out the problem.  Don't let this put you off going.

Lesley1970 it puts us off going in any restaurant where there is  dog roaming, I do not like dogs round my table when I am eating, I do not like waiters stroking dogs then serving my food.
I am a dog lover we have had many dogs over the years, but never allowed in the dining area when we are eating.

I echo karaokemark`s sentiments.
I wouldn`t be in a dog kennel while a dog was eating, therefore I don`t expect a dog to be in the same room as me when I`m dining.

In reply To Mr Lance, I know that a prawn cocktail is not cooked. He had stopped me and asked me why they were waiting so long for they starter. 10 minutes.... We were quite busy and we did not have our normal staff, I was quite stressed at the time and although they were waiting for for Garlic mushrooms and 2 other HOT starters, the prawns were the first thing that came into my head. As any one who frequents our restaurant knows that we cook everything from fresh and being a chef he should know that a 20 minute wait is normal. When I asked if there was a problem as I always do, I was told there was none. I notice there is no compliant about the main meal, because 4 empty plates don't lie do they! Regarding my dog, I did remove Dani from the table and do so for any one who doesn't like dogs. For some strange reason she took a liking to their table and returned just to lie down. She doesn't beg at tables because she is not alowed to. But I do believe after the second time of just lying under the table and being removed and scolded she got the message and left them alone.

Carole, we eat at Guven's throughout the season, and during events that you hold for charities and the like. We have never had a complaint about the food, staff, Dani etc etc......
Carry on the good work!  :)
NB: A 'chef' describing Menemen as an 'Omelette'..... :D (this was in a different restaurant post)

I have to agree. We love Guvens too. Everyone is really friendly and the food is good. I could spend ages watching the dog playing on the beach. He has never bothered us whilst eating. He sometimes wanders over sits down, I have never seen him beg.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday night if there are no delays of course.

love this restaurant, is one if my favourites.  Everyone is welcome including my mut (who is on a lead at all time, except when he is swimming).  Have taken people there who say that there is something very special about it.  My grandson thinks it is one of the bested places in the world, and danni loves to play, but not if you got a ball. praise indeed from a 6yr old.

He does have the right to his opinion, and if he feels 12 lira was excessive for the prawn cocktail he received (where on menus does it tell you the size you will receive?!) then he can post his feelings here.

i agree with you scunner, lance does have the right to his opinion.my gripe is the way the topic headline was "rip off "...surely something along the line of maybe "poor starter",or "small prawn cocktail" would of been much fairer...rip off is a very strong way to describe one poor starter of i assume 3 courses x how many people???.this gives the impession on first reading ( to potential new customers ),as a place to avoid...which to most on the forum couldnt be further from the truth...again in my opinion,a lovely place, lovely hardworking owners and staff...city hull

On this topic, as with many other restaurant topics, the long time waiting for the food is often commented on.  Many years ago in the uk i worked in a pub restaurant where all the food was cooked from scratch, and nobody compained at waiting 30 or so minutes for meals.  I think that in the uk we are so used to food in restaurants which is delivered by brake brothers, full of preservatives, gamma radiated, and vaccum packed then either fried or microwaved, we have forgotten that food cooked in the old fashion way takes longer. Next time you want to eat at 8pm go to the restaurant at 6.30 watch the sunset, relax, enjoy and chill out, lifes too short.

I would agree with Mark that however much you like pets of any type they should not be allowed in bars or restaurants where food and drinks are being preserved and consumed.I would personally complain to the management if a dog was anywhere near me whilst I was eating and if it were not removed I would leave and not return as it would ne obvious that people care for the dogs more than their business/customers.

I am surprised you can't see the problem with dogs in restaurants, Stoop. Let me attempt to explain what I think the problem might be. Dogs lick their own a***holes and testicles then lick your hand, the chef's hand or perhaps the person who serves you and brings your food to your table's hand. Could that be it?

I have been a chef for many years and then a catering consultant so i know a little bit about food i am not bothered about waiting for fresh food to be cooked thats how it should be ,and i dont go round all the bars or food places looking for faults ,if i did i would be on here every minute of the day,all i said was 12 tl was very expensive for the amount of prawns i got and no way do you serve warm prawns in a cocktail or am i wrong about that as well ,and also i like dogs got no problem with them its the owners ,one of the people i was with was realy scared of Alsatians after being bitten by one ,and that was one that loved everyone and no problem before it bit this person ,so when one comes and lays on there feet ,that upset them a little bit.so can we drop this now before it get to a slagging match .

point taken scunner but i have been in kitchens where no dogs are in sight and you would not eat there if you knew how dirty some are. i've also seen the market pancake guys lick their fingers before they turn them yet people still eat them.

just because you have dogs does not mean you become unhygenic - unless of course you let them poo and don't pick it up ;-)

if dogs bothered me i would not go to the restaurants that have them - problem solved.

Why you are poking your nose in puma i dont know I'm not prepared to put all my c.v.on here .sounds to me like you are trying to show me up or call me a liar ,i think you will find on one of my many posts over the years that i did say i ran some burger vans so dont listen to rumours or insinuate i am a liar.
But my last dealings with catering was running some burger vans which i sold and made quite a nice profit hence buying house in turkey is that a problem ,seems to me you might be turning your nose up about burger vans most burger vans are cleaner or should be than conventional kitchens ,just in case you find some thing on the grape vine ,i sold burgers and hot dogs bacon sarnies all types of food and drinks ,these were not normal burger vans they are called di pintos  from l.a. u.s.a.they cost each £35,000 to get on the road with out tax and insurance ,so if you want to know anything else about me puma you knock at my door next time your out here and i will put you right .[:(!]

Just to put this £5.00 prawn cocktail into perspective, modern comfortable pubs in my area in the midlands are currently offering the following.Main meals including steaks £2.50 and £299.Two main meals and two drinks £8.99.Two main meals and choice of either two starters or two desserts £9.99.I complained about one steak at a pub last year. The manager apologised and invited us back at a time to suit us and gave us two 3 course meals plus two drinks. All on the house. That's service.

To be honest, I love dogs and don't mind them wandering around.
It's common sense not to touch them and let them near food, so just let them wander - they're only curious.

Love the humour here, but its not so funny when they decide to fall out under the table, particularly if one of the diners has his own dog there already.Sorry but I think its time a more serious view was taken about street dogs scavenging.I have noticed recently as we come to the end of the season an increase of the said dogs adopting teritorial positions for the winter,ie at street junctions, back of restrurants etc.Its not amusing when walking home late evening to have one jump out growling as he assumes you are invading his patch as it were. Please!! no tirade from dog lovers, its the system not the dog thats the problem.

please don't bring "SCAMPI" from cafe pazar into this she's a gorgeous little thing no trouble at all and certainly not an alsation with that said i like "DANNI" to OH! and lance, prawn cocktail and guven's also,we do seem to have gone a little overboard about the one and only complaint i have ever heard about guven's though lance is entitled to it however he heads it,i'm sure it's been taken on board by the owner's,it's a nice place honest!
