Hi everyone, we are new to the forum. I'm Mike and my wife is Debbie. We have been to Turkey several times over the last few years, usually staying in Olu Deniz and we have never ever wanted to come home. We have for some time been thinking about buying property in Calis or Ovacik, so much so that last time we were there we spent 2 or 3 days viewing property around these area's and got really close to buying but with the market being as it is, thought we would wait until we got home to check out the market properly.
Can you please advise us on two points. Firstly in relation to the increase in criminal activity in Ovacik and Calis? We have been doing some research and recently, there appears to be an increasing issue with foreign owners property being targeted by people breaking in to steal goods etc, which even seems to be taking place while the residents are sleeping in bed? As we are considering a permanent move and this is extremely worrying.
Please can you give us your honest opinion on what's happening, as this is becoming a concern in our plans to buy a property in these area's.
And finally which is the best area to buy, Calis or Ovacik? We understand that you may be a bit biased about your own area if you already have property there, but we hope that this won't influence your honesty on the pro's and con's of both areas. Thanks in advance and you never know we (hopefully) may see you there soon!
Cheers' Mike & Debbie

Hi and a very warm welcome to the Forum. I don't think any one can give you an answer to your question which is best. They are both very different places and yes you will get bias from owners in these areas.
You must do all the research you can and then decide what is best for YOU. For instance have you checked either of these places out in Winter? Shortlist places with your research and then check them out on the ground in and out of season. We live in Fethiye itself in a totally Turkish area and have done for several years.....For many reasons it is right for us but would not necessarily be right for everyone. :)

You get more for your money in Calis, it's warmer in winter in Calis, there's more to do in Calis in winter, Calis isn't up a mountain with no beach :D
Welcome to the forum WLT. I actually believe I am not biased :) Ovacik may be right for some but not for me.

Have to agree. There isn't really a "best" it is all down to what you like yourselves. Each area has different things going for it.

There are other areas worth researching as well, like Uzumlu. Open all year round so no ghost town in the winter and it has lots of expats living here. Yes it's up in the mountains but it means you can choose when to go to the beach, only 20 mins away, and you don't suffer the beer belly tourists in summer.
Do your research and visit in Jan/Feb which are the coldest, wettest months.

Thank you for your replies, :) we are planning to visit in Nov and again in Feb just to get a real feel for the location when out of season and also the different climate. We did look at Uzumlu and Gocek 15 months ago but prefered Calis and Ovacik as it seemed to offer more of what we are looking for. 8)
Please can you also give any feedback on the crime situation? Sorry to be negative about this, but it is very important to us as we live in a rural location on the north Northumberland coast where crime is very low. Although we are realistic to the ways of the world we don't want to move to an area where we feel unsafe or anxious, especially in a different country.
It would also be nice to get feedback from current full time residents of both Calis and Ovacik in relation to our first post.
Many thanks again for the feedback so far.

Welcome to the forum We Love Turkey. I cant really help much with your questions as I've only been here in Ovaçik since April but I do know the two places are very different. I think there is more of an ex-pat community in Calis - only from what I've seen from my friends that live there. It is warmer there and there is a beach (not my kind of beach but its a beach). I've been told Ovaçik is cold in the winter - so I'm ready for it! I like Ovaçik bcos I can walk into Hisaronu or dolmuş down to Olu Deniz or Fethiye. Sorry I dont have any information about crime. I've been told by others who have bought places here that ground floor apartments or the lower floor of a villa usually have the bars on the windows to deter anyone. I'm only renting at the moment and not on the ground floor - I wouldnt rent a ground floor apartment but thats just being careful.
Good luck with your search and enjoy your visits to suss it out in November and February. I hope you get all the answers you need and can make a decision as to whether to buy. Enjoy!

Yes there is crime here as there is anywhere in the world including the UK. Like the tabloids nobody says I haven't been burgled so reports seem probably worse than they actually are. In most cases the crimes are caused by carelessness eg leaving the doors open at night and even leaving windows open when they are out at the beach because it is hot. There are several low cost options which can substantially reduce any risk which have been previously discussed on this forum. Not least is just think secure which costs nothing. We actually feel safer here we did in the UK.
Hoodies, drunken gangs of teenagers etc.....just does not exist. :)

Thanks tribalelder and cheers Puma for your posts. We really thought the crime situation wasn't that bad as we've been several times and always felt really at home and safe. Must admit we really do (as the member name implies)enjoy being there and would gladly move there permanetly tomorrow, given the chance.
We just want to get as much info as poss before we invest in a villa. It is our plan to buy now, and then retire over there as soon as we can. 8)
Not much to keep us here in the UK and our belief is things will only get worse and before half of the country heads out there we want to make sure we have our place sorted.
Thanks again to everyone for your posts it seems that we have found the right place.

Hi after over 12 months research, asking many of the same questions you are asking, answers to which you will find on this forum, we have taken the plunge and purchased a 3 bed duplex in Ovacik. I am going out in 2 weeks to sign on the dotted line!! If this forum is anything to go by, the postings on this superb forum indicates those who have purchased have never looked back and like the UK, things are sensationalised it appears, I suspect that is to do with the fact that crime is generally rare and as such is reported as a major issue. Compare that tp the UK, crime is comon place ansd only major crimes get reported. Hope this helps.
