Hi everyone,
Its great to find a site where we can hopefully get and exchange some useful information about living in Turkey.
We are in the process of selling up in the U.K. and coming over to start a new life in Turkey, hopefully just after Xmas. We think we are making progress with getting our tax numbers, setting up bank accounts etc, but one question we can't seem to get an answer for is, can we bring out our pet dog before we get our residency?

Hi Pete & Jo

Yes you can bring a pet over without first getting residency.

You need to make sure the airline can carry the dog, often more a physical space thing than anything else, and you need an approved dog carrier basket thingy - the airline can advise where to get these. Turkish Airlines seem to be the most receptive, Cyprus Turkish can do it on certain flights but if your dog plus weight of basket are over 32kg then they use normal baggage rules and may refuse to carry it.

As an extra piece of information, airlines nowadays will not accept a dog that has been sedated in any way, so be careful.

Hope that helps,

Scunner

Thanks Scunner,

At long last we have an answer. Now all we have to do is try and persuade the airline to let our old Mutt on board !!! ( I shouldn't really call my husband that I suppose )

Thanks for all the info.everyone. We are getting quotes from a few companies regarding getting our dog, Harvey, out to Turkey with us.
Heres another question. Regarding residency visas, do we have to apply here in England at the Turkish consulate before we travel, or as we understand, can we come over on a normal tourist visa then apply for residency when we get here ?
Once again, we are getting conflicting info. from different sources.

Don't bother doing anything in the UK, you will still have to do exactly the same when you get here as you would if you hadn't done anything in the UK.

The 3 month visa gives plenty enough time to sort out residency.

Hope that helps,
