Title: Sunday's Car Boot was the biggest ever
Post by: Pi55y on November 23, 2009, 13:46:04 PM
I'm not sure if it is because of Bayram this week or just because it had forecast a nice day but the car boot sale on Sunday was absolutely jam-packed and we had a record number of stalls 140+

There were already people there when we arrived at 6.00 am and by 7.15 the car park was full to capacity and we had to start using the side roads, the pavement and the promenade (unfortunately we are unable to put cars on the prom this year). After some rapid thinking we somehow managed to squeeze everyone in, even though it meant some people dropping off their stuff and parking elsewhere.

It was certainly chaotic for half an hour or so and we apologise to those who turned up at what would normally be considered a sensible time only to have to wait to be allocated a space. We also apologise to those who had to wait for the hurriedly arranged second delivery of tables (luckily these did not take that long to arrive).

A few badly parked buyers cars did not help the traffic situation but the zabita were called to sort out this sitauation (it is great to have the head of the zabita on our committee:D)

Finally when everyone was settled, it was a brilliant day. It was a great atmosphere, bright sunshine, everyone did really well and there were some great bargains to be had. Some stalls actually sold out.  The Carnival Committee raised a record 2000 TL from the stall fees plus the sale of items on the committee stall.

The next car boot sale will take place on Sunday 20 December and we advise sellers to get there early. We do not expect this to be as busy but we will be meeting to prepare a plan should the situation ever arise again.

I would like to give a huge thanks to the committee members who worked their socks off yesterday  :)

We have been offered the Sunday market place but it would mean holding the event on a different day of the week and to be honest I think it would lose the atmosphere. It would also not benefit all of the bars and restaurants on the front who who do really well on Car Boot Sundays

It is a win win situation.

Well done to all involved.

Well done C&P and all of the committee, 2,000 lira is just a fantastic result. If you get packed on the 20th why not run an early shift then a late shift, it would be great for us as we don't get into Dalaman till late afternoon.

Don't Swear !!

It was a fantabulous day at the car boot with a very happy friendly atmosphere and fantastic weather for relaxing with a drink and lunch on the front.
Thanks to the comitte it really is win win and well worth my trip from Dalyan just for that wonderful Calis view.

This sounds like it was a superb event.

Do they hold anything like this in Ovacik, we have just purchased an apartment and need to finish furnishing and fitting it out so a boot sale might be just the ticket! We are due out again mid Feb 2010 so is there anything going on at that time of year so I can find some bargains.

If anyone moving back to UK that time of the year and have anything to sell, let me know via my linked e-mail address, we might be able to do a deal. I need to furnish a double bedroom, I need outside furniture and loungers etc, TV and DVD and mirrors, toaster, kettle, pots and pans, crockery, the list goes an but you will get the drift of the things I still ned to buy. Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin, I'm not sure about the Car Boot in Hisaronu as this has nothing to with Calis Carnival Committee, but there will be a Calis Car Boot on Sunday 21 February and Sunday 21 March so you should cath one of these depending on how long you are out for.

The car boot in Hisaronu is not a patch on Calis Boot and I live in Ovacik. There is also another secondhand market in Fethiye the first wednesday in every month. It is at the fruit and veg market that is under cover.

It may be a good atmosphere for all on the front on Sundays, but what about the market traders' livelihood suffering.  After all its not about making money for the bars and restaurants - its about helping the Turkish Community.  A Car Boot Sale on a Sunday is only a tradition in Britain because thats the day that most people are not working.      The majority of Brits here are not working any day of the week, so maybe to serve all of the Community and traders, pick a day when the impact of the Boot Sale will not harm local tradition, after all, its been around a lot longer than the Carnival.  It was a shame to see the Sunday Pazar so empty last weekend.

We don't sell fruit and vedge at the car boot sale, and if people choose to shop for clothes at a car boot sale it's because they cant afford the prices being asked for at the market, maybe the traders should look at themselves and return to traditional prices.

My post did not say "dont have a Car Boot Sale" it implied that if the CBS was held on a different day (either Saturday or Wednesday) when nothing else is happening in Calis, local traditions are not then compromised.     The bars, restaurants and the local traders could all benefit.

Call me superhuman but when I lived there I managed, when necessary, to go to the car boot sale AND the sunday market all in the same day. Absolute tosh, ex-cheltenham person. Besides and furthermore, the sunday market can be pretty empty any week outside the main season, whether the car boot sale is on or not.

The majority of car booters on Sunday were Turkish local people. Most of them not rich by any means. I spoke to 2 of them who were selling some of their goods as Bayram is coming and they needed the money. I also spoke to a Welsh woman today who is married to a Turkish man. They had a business in Olu Deniz which did very badly. They are selling some of their clothes and home goods to make money to keep themselves in the Winter. There is a market somewhere on most days in this area. It will always hurt someone but a lot more needy people gain.

Duck pies? I never saw duck pies! I'd have bought a few of those. You can't get duck pies at the sunday market you see. Or grapefruits at the car boot. Life was so complicated back then :D

As for Little Britain - when we had a stall at the car boot sale it wasn't British people we were selling to in the main by any means. Please remember it makes money to help people who couldn't care less whether it came from 'Little Britain', sausage rolls or anywhere else. Why are some individuals so against using what works to benefit local people? If a bacon sandwich van made enough money in Calis to buy a projector for a school that needs one, who gives a ****?

It will do, it is insensitive in the extreme to a lot of people who do a lot more good for "the Turkish community" you value so much than you do.

Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't, but the fact remains (as I've stated so many times) that the expats who do the least have the most to say when it comes to the efforts of others.

Well it appears that lots of people have already given their views as to the benefits of the Car Boot to the local community. Thank you all very much for your support.

If ECL cared to look around the boot sale she would see that 80% of the sellers are Turkish families trying to make a few lira and at least 80% of the buyers are also Turkish.  If she was there early in the morning she would see truckloads of Turkish families arriving as early as 6.00 am waiting for the stalls to set up. Many of these are from the poorer area of Gunlukbasi, Catalarik and outlying villages and they are there to buy secondhand clothes and shoes and pick up other bargains that they would not normally be able to afford. Many of these Turkish sellers and buyers would not be able to attend if it was held on another day.

To put it in perspective we have 8 car boots in a year  - that is 8 Sundays out of 52 - and they are usually finished by 1.30 which gives everyone time to do their normal shopping afterwards.

The Carnival Committee have always been very sensitive with regard to the Calis Sunday market traders and we try very hard to exclude commercial traders from the car boot sale so that we are not encroaching on their territory. We are not in competition with them, we do not want new clothes stalls, shoe stalls etc.  Goods sold at the boots are mainly secondhand, unwanted or handmade. Occasionally a trader will turn up but we then call the Zabita to get them removed (as happened this Sunday).

Also the car boots are attracting people from as far away as Marmaris, Kas and Kalkan (ok these are mainly ex-pats and they usually turn up later in the morning) who come for the day out so this has to be good for the town too as it is bringing in money and all of these people have the chance to go to the main market and shop there as well.

The sale is also providing a chance for various charity stalls to raise money for good causes. Animal Aid raise lots of money for helping the animals, the Turkish charity Mavi Kus raise money for poor people in the villages and the carnival committee raise money for disadvantaged children to name but a few.

The car boot sale may be a British import but I'd say it is a very Turkish Affair!

Many if not the majority of sellers are Turkish and the majority of those coming to buy are definitly Turkish.

It is an opportunity for many to buy things they couldn't perhaps otherwise afford.

Flea Markets have a long tradition in Turkey too - maybe the modern day car boot is just another flea market.

What ever else it is it's also a nice social occasion, creates an opportunity to catch up with friends and I for one love the chance to pick up some home made chutney (cherry and cucumber thank you pies and cakes or is it cakes and pie lady who has a shop in Calis)and pickled onions and sausage rolls.

Only thing is I do think it's a shame we aren't allowed on the promenade any more; I don't know why not! Does anyone [?]

Why is everyone so defensive, I was at both on Sunday, my mere observation was, that the Sunday market traders could suffer - where in my post did I say, 'stop the Car Boot'.
Don't be too quick to judge, or shoot others down in flames, for having, (what they think) is a valid comment, and who do not have to broadcast "their" help in the community.

Our local market is Patlancik on A Saturday. This one is always very busy and this week was no exception. Most of the stallholders there are also at Calis on a Sunday and we most of the English that we meet there are from Calis areas. Maybe this is due to the prices on Calis Market being more expensive? One of the cafe owners told me that he charges more at Calis because there are more tourists at that one and they can afford it.

That simply isn't true. You said the sunday market traders are suffering, that the boot fair was inflicting "Little Britain" on the area and that it should be moved to a different day of the week to preserve "local tradition".

The responses (particularly from those directly involved in the fundraising) show clearly that THIS is the big new "local tradition" with the Turks, duck pies or not.

You further took pleasure and amusement in "ruffling feathers" which is a childish way to enjoy a community forum. If you want to stir up trouble for your own amusement you can stay away.

I also know (as mercury points out) that the very same market traders that attend the Calis sunday market are at a number of others. In Koycegiz, for example, they charge 15-20% less for fruit and veg on average than at Calis. If they were to take their 20% CALIS SURCHARGE on local people of all nationalities and pocket half and give half to the local causes being helped by the car boot sale and other events I might share your sympathy and concern for them. As they hike their prices on Sundays to line own their pockets, b*ll*cks to them lol
