Title: Deliveries from the UK
Post by: laptahall on December 05, 2009, 13:44:22 PM
We have recently moved to the area from the TRNC and wonder about having letters and parcels sent to us from the UK.  This was a huge problem in Turkish Cyprus!  Is the postal service reliable?  If not, what about courier services?  Can anyone recommend a service that won't bankrupt us?

If you get things sent from the U.K. parcels under 2 kilos can be sent International Signed For, which is insured and will require a signature. Anything over 2 kilos will be sent by Parcelforce and will be expensive. If you go 1 gramme over 2 kilos then it must go by Parcelforce and that will double the price. If you get parcels sent get the sender to use polystyrene boxes which are light and very strong. I have a website and I get my poly boxes from a local factory that make them, they are the best things to use when sending abroad, as cardboard is heavy and not as strong as polystyrene.   These are the two websites I use to calculate postage First Royal Mail, Second Parcelforce.

I have had a few letters from the UK in the 8 weeks I've been here.  Seem to take about 3 weeks to arrive.  I have no letter box but there is always someone in one of the apartments.  Whoever answers the door leaves the mail on the other peoples door steps for when they come home.  Not had any problems so far.

http://www.parcel2go.com/

this may be a good option too - I believe they now include delivery to Turkey.

My mum has used internally in the UK and also to some other overseas countries (not Turkey) and she says they are excellent.

Amazon despatched a parcel to me on 21st Oct by DHL Deutsche Post(not trackable after it leaves Germany). It was due to arrive 5th Nov and it arrived on 29th November!
I reported it not received on 17th Nov and they called me and refunded the postage and resent the goods. No sign of that one yet!
Normal mail seems to take about 7-10 days but a magazine I subscibe to turns up (if at all) about 1 month later.
Very frustrating postal system coming into Turkey.

It makes sending anything to Turkey non-viable for many companies I believe, due to the costs involved in lost product and compensation in so many cases. I was amused (in a tragic way) to recently read that Marks & Spencer will deliver to Syria, Lebanon and Libya, but not Turkey.

Its the same on ebay - lots of sellers who will generally send overseas won't send to Turkey.

You can only have a PO Box if you have residency.

Sorry Linda, but wrong.
Last January Fetiye Times arranged for several of us to get box;s, it took 10 min each and cost around 20 - 30 lira including deposit which is refundable.

In the 5 years I have been here and the 100's of small packets I have sent worldwide only 1 was "lost", in fact it wasn't lost at all just took a detour for a while.

As regards the Ebay sellers, I just ask, I come across lots of sellers who will ship to Europe and Turkey does not come up in their shipping address's but just a quick polite message to them usually works for me.

In 5 years of asking a seller if they are willing to post to Turkey I have only had 1 seller who point blank refused, due I'm afraid, she told me, to selling to a Turkish person who then claimed he didn't receive his item's, so, got his money back via Paypal, a few weeks later he was selling the goods on his own site. I know this happens the Ebay world over, but it's a shame that 1 spoils it for all the honest ebayers.

When we first got here I applied for a post box and was put on the waiting list at Fethiye PTT...I'm still waiting lol....Mind you if they told me now a box was available I'd probably tell them where to stick it!

Can anyone advise on up to date information on the postal service here, have just moved here recently and family keep wanting to send us stuff. Have a calendar
of the family floating around somewhere from my daughter posted some time ago, still no sign of it !! Is there any recent info on the post office box situation.

My daughter posted a parcel to me 12 days ago, it arrived yesterday but PTT man couldnt find us, so he went to Tinx's house and asked him!
Not ideal, but it worked!

I had 2 parcels posted a day apart last March, one came quickly, the other took a week longer. And have recieved a couple of greetings cards.

I guess its going to vary area to area, and the more remote or less known or if you have no sokak number the less likely you'll receive it

I posted in December that I sent a box weighing 12k from Glasgow to a friend in Calis.  I booked the pick-up with Parcelforce at a cost of £38. The box was picked up in the morning and I was given a trackng number.  By that evening it was at the international hub and the next morning was in Istanbul The box arrived in Fethiye on the Friday and my friend collected it on Saturday as she had received a telephone call on the Friday asking exactly where their house was. Excellent service and good price.  On the other side, I have to say that a letter posted via Royal Mail to the same address has still NOT been received.  Somewhere there are 3 pkts of custard powder and a letter floating around.   :)

I've sent myself some quite big boxes from the Uk - the last one in December - weighed 21kgs - I used Parcels2go - and cost £42 - it was the week before Christmas and they didn't collect on the day stated but dud collect the following day.  It took 6 days to arrive on my doorstep.   The Yurtici Cargo people here are very good.   I have also had smaller items via Royal Mail too.
