Just a word of warning....Burglars are active in Uzumlu yet again! Friends of ours had their bungalow broken into yesterday between the hours of 5pm and 10pm whilst out visiting. A number of items were taken including plasma TV and jewellery. The burglars must have been there for some time as drawers and cupboards had been emptied. Jandarma have been informed and finger prints etc taken.
-
What security have they?
-
not enough!
-
where about is the bungalow please
-
The bungalow is on the flat following the road round left passed the football stadium. They had security bars on all windows but unfortunately not the doors, one of which was forced.
-
Strange that there also seems a trend for these to occur on a Sunday.
-
No its not a trend that seems to occure on a sunday. My friends were burgled on wednesday afternoon & another couple that we know that only live 5mins from the the first burgalry were done in the early evening the same day. instead of moaning on about what security people have & where in the village it has happened why dont we try to get together & sort this out so it doesnt keep on happening. Or are you all to busy with your socalising...
-
What do you suggest? there have been meetings with the Jandama etc no one has been caught and the break-in's continue...friends of mine are not going out now
-
our friends have thought one Idear was for us as brits to form a neighbourhood watch type scheme. There are a few x policemen in the village who will have first hand experiance of how to set this up. My husband is an x policeman & one of our friends burgaled is also an x policeman. Im sure there should be enough people living here full time that could spare a few hours a week to patrole there area. something needs to be done.
-
Clairelynne why don't you organise something then post it on here and see what the response is.
I think your dig about "you're all too busy socialising" is not needed. There are not events on every night of the week and the ones that are held on a regular basis fund raise for the dogs home and Uzumlu childrens projects and apart from that not all of us want to live like hermits we enjoy going out and meeting others.
At the end of the day, everyone is responsible for their own security and asking the question , have I done everything possible to protect my home and possesions?
Every sympathy for those affected by the scum who do this and we report anyone suspicious we see hanging around and so should everyone else.
I have had a conversation with Eddie today about this and asked him to get the villagers more involved and suspicious. If we all cancel quiz nights, stop going out etc it will be them who will loose by way of places closing and jobs being lost plus donations towards equipment that the village children need being stopped.
I wish you luck and wait to hear your ideas re Neighbour hood watch and support you to that end.

Yet again we are experiancing another spate of burglaries, and no doubt once again nothing will be done about it. What chance have we when the mayor was heard to say he does not like the English, what chance have we when despite the amount of burglaries, no one has seen or heard anything.I know of someone who has two dogs and full security bars all round, and still got burgled. The scum doing this know their chances of getting caught are remote, as we dont have a police force here. The comment about us all being responsible for our own security is a little insulting as we are spending a lot of money trying to protect ourselves. We get nothing from the Belediye, ie decent roads, street lighting etc, despite ploughing a lot of money into the comunity. I am not the first to say that most of the time, proper roads finish at the last Tukish house. I would be more inclined to attend fund raising events, if the money was used to supply street lighting for us, or perhaps to help fund security patrols. It seems, the only way to be sure you dont get burgled is never go out, because if you do, you cannot be sure when you get home that you havent been burgled. This is not what we came out here for. Perhaps a meeting would be a good idea, we need to find ways of protecting ourselves, because we dont seem to be getting any from the locals.
-
lanky,it's very unlikely that you'll ever have a Police force in the village. Like most of the rest of Turkey, the Police are only responsible for law and order within town boundaries.
The Jandarma have jurisdiction over most rural areas in Turkey, including Uzumlu, and in many areas where there are both Jandarma and Polis, the Jandarma have seniority. It's the local Jandarma that you've got to engage with and get them motivated to help you.
-
I wasnt having a dig at anyone. The last meeting that was organised was a total waste of time, The organisers did everything to try to make inroads, my husband & our neighbours went to the meeting & it was a very poor turn out only a few people there. We have heard nothing since, If people cant be bothered to go to meetings then what can be done!!!! you do a great job in Uzumlu fund raising etc but I agree with Lanky on that subject.
Firo As for your dig about being a hermit you dont know us & our life we have a fantastic circle of friends our life is just fine as it is thankyou.
I have spoken to a friend who got burgaled & told them what our friends surgested.
-
KKOB, i fully understand the role of the Jandarma, my point was that they are not career policeman, but in the main conscripts, so possibly lack the dedication of those that want a job for life in this area. After being burgled, i spoke many times to the jandarma patrols, and almost without exception, they said they looked forward to doing their time and going home. A lot i became friends with, but they are not policeman, which at the moment is what we need.
-
The suggestions that the monies raised from fund raising are not viable because:
1: Not everyone attends the events.
2: Why should those that do attend pay for street lighting and security patrols, as you suggest, for those who do not attend?
3: The people who attend, our events, where asked if they wanted the fund raising to continue when we had paid the cement factory lawyers bill. They suggested and decided to continue the fund raising to help the children in the community.
5: The fund raising that takes place at both quizzes is recognised under official charity banners.Fund raising for street lights etc does not class as a charity therefore the legality would be questionable.
Both of our Turkish neighbours had a street light fitted at a cost of 50tl each so that is an option if you want more lighting.
Another point I'd like to make is, yes some may decide to stay in but a lot of the breakins have been done at the time the residents were in bed or out shopping during the day and this has been the first time, that we know off, it has happened to people who were at a quiz night. So staying in is no guarantee to stop your home being burgled.
Lanky I'm sorry that you think my statement that that we are responsible for our own home security is insulting, but that is a fact whether you live here or the UK.
In no way are any of our comments meant to offend or insult we are just trying to be factual and adding our tuppence worth in 8)
If anyone calls a meeting we will be happy to attend as long as it doesn't class with either quiz night ;)

I think a lot of valid points have been made here, I and a lot of others I know in Uzumlu are very frustrated and even angry by the lack of concern shown by the mayor and jandarma in trying to sort this problem.
The mayor clearly is not interested in this problem and by various feed back from some Turkish villagers I will go as far as to say he is negative about the British. At the last meeting he suggested that residents should hire security staff to patrol, that says it all to me in other words(it's your problem not ours).
I would question why we should pay extra for security patrols, street lights and roads when it should already be covered by the taxes we pay (wonder what the cost would be for a British request for a street light?!) I notice the football pitch has lots of lighting at night all night perhaps the mayor is afraid someone will steal the grass!
At the end of the day unless you vote which the majority of us don't he and others in positions cannot give a stuff about us!
Therefore it is no surprise to see the majority of dirt roads where ex pats villas are and to see street lights stop before these same villas and that when problems are reported you just get the shrugged shoulders or asked for charity donations to try and sort it.
A lot reading this will think well you choose to live here put up with it, which has its merits but the point is we are not here demanding extras we are here asking for a basic equal right as residents, land owners, contributors of taxes, contributors to the community, neighbours and ultimatley fellow humans.
I also hear a lot of time in response it is not only the ex pats getting broken into but that quite frankly is crap in comparision to the frequency and dare I say almost common occurence of ex pats getting targeted, in this small village of ours, what was the last count over 40 properties broken into in Uzumlu the past year alone, at this rate we will be classed a top crime hotspot in the UK???!!
I would suggest a caring mayor would have got of his back side to arrange such meetings himself especially as this is occuring in his village regularly also the Jandarma are conscripts who really do not have the training or skills to deal with this, but can be pro active to the issue by answering concerns and at least taking some action on suggestions. I have not seen a patrol on my road since September, why?
-
Good points, well argued.
-
Another thing I have noticed is that since the new chief of the Jandarma has taken over he has stopped the road blocks at the Hunters Lodge and in this time the numbers of burgularies has increased. It was a deterrant. Prehaps if this meeting happens that point could be raised.
Fi
-
We have not seen jandarma patroling where we are since, well I cant remember the last time it must be 4/5 months. We still see them patroling in the valley every night, some of the village seems to be totaly forgotten & unimportant to the mayor. luckaly we have great neighbours & we look afer each others property when we go out day or night.
-
hello all.
i think its time for all the english in the area to get together and form a neighbourhood watch. if we show we are standing together and fighting back, they will realise we are not an easy touch.
thieves always looks for the easiest, most valiable places to break into. we as english are far too trusting.
x
-
Well said, Corbindallas.
Regarding the roadblock at The Hunter's Lodge whilst they were a deterent I think they were there more for drink/driving
I would agree that some kind of neighbourwatch is set up. However, if a meeting is arranged I would strongly suggest that the meeting IS NOT held in one of the restaurants. Walls have ears and it seems odd to me that the houses targetted invariably seem to know when people are out.
-
As requested Dinger and I have arranged a meeting for Thursday 21st January at 2pm at the Cadianda Resturant (Mustafa's).
I would please request you pass this on by word of mouth to any ex pats who may not read this, as we need to ensure as many people attend to decide how best to take this issue forward, we have made it during the day so as to avoid any conflicts with other evening engagements and also hopefully everyone will be available and feel more comfortable to attend.
This meeting is only for us at this time, the mayor and jandarma have not been invited, as we need to ensure that this is better supported first, so as our concerns can be presented more strongly in future.
The last meeting was attended by about only 7 households when this clearly is a wider problem here, and to this end we cannot take things forward as a community if we do not support each other, so please if you are here and available come and have your say.
I appreciate advice re posting info on time and dates and holding this at a resturant but frankly we do not have any (free) alternative or way of trying to inform as many ex pats as possible.
Hopefully see you there.

I agree with your comments Peecee it does seem rather strange that these people seem to know when the people are out.
We have noticed since Wed the jandarma are patroling down and around the Denizli road on a regular basis, it seems like every 3 hours and also on through the night. Our dog is causing havoc with his continuing barking as they pass. During the night we were concerned that it was prowlers until we got up to investigate..It was the Jandarma walking past so i must also appologise to our neighbours for the noise. I like to think he is a good detterent.
It does look like something is being done on thier part, hopefully this may help to keep these so and so's at bay.
If a meeting is arranged, like you say Peecee preferably not in a restaurant, we will gladly attend.
-
We will be there same as last time :)
-
Will be there. Would it be worth putting notices in shops and other cafes?
-
hi,
my friends/my husband and i will all be attending the meeting.
my husband said, if anyone needs a guard dog, they can hire me for an hour or two. lol. cheeky man
street lighting is always a good idea.
i think we should all look out for each other.
lets be honest, turkey is still MUCH safer than the uk.
you all seem like very caring, and helpful people.
lets all work together to keep ourselves safe.

We will publisize this on our next quiz night on the 20th Jan the night before so if any one has forgotten the date it will give them a reminder.
Fi
-
Thanks Fi, peecee I would hope that we can let people know by word of mouth rather than adverts in shops as it may be better to not paste it everywhere. Obviously we want as many ex pats to know about it, I think if we can start as we mean to go on and be neighbourly we should be able to inform everyone as needs?
-
Sorry we cant be there, will be at your next ,Calvin
-
Unfortunatley I have just heard there was another burglary last night to a ex pat's bungalow situated near the round house resturant, the intruders where disturbed by the resident and 2 people ran from the premises and made their escape in a white vehicle, another vehicle reported to be a old Hyundai people carrier also made of at speed from near the football club on seeing the 2 make thier escape from the bungalow, this was around 7.30pm. I will try and get more info on this.
-
Would it be possible for someone to kindly post a summary of the meeting on the forum afterwards? Sadly we wont be able to attend, but are keen to know the outcome or any advice given. Thank you.
-
Cordindallas good info and we can all keep an eye open for the vehicles.
My guess, the people carrier was to carry the goodies. 2 vehicles confuses anyone who chases them as I bet they both go off in different directions : :)
I hope the Jandarma have been informed.
Fi
-
Did they notice whether the white vehicle was a saloon or estate?
-
Quite a few of us in Ovacik who bought in 2002/2003 paid to have a streetlight put right outside our houses. It was about eighteen pounds then I think. We considered it money well spent. :)
-
When out Turkish neighbours had one put in last year it was 50tl so not expensive. They just fit then to the nearest electric pole.
Fi
-
I really miss it if the bulb goes but the men come along pretty quickly and replace the old one. I am really glad of it if I pop out to put the rubbish in the bin at night or do something like locking the car. For 50 lira it makes a great difference, not just as a security measure. :)
-
Our Turkish neighbours paid to have a light put on the pole outside their villa. So, when Turks have lights outside their homes, is it mostly that they have shrugged their shoulders and paid because they know its the only way they'll get a light?
-
I think we just asked Tedas as it was then for a light. They put it in facing the house at first, absolutely blinding 8) 8):DThen they came out and re-adjusted it on to what at the time was not a proper road, just a track which has since been surfaced.
The Jandarma do patrol and I think it makes their job easier, they cannot see in the dark either!
-
Well at last we have something concrete to go on, well done for posting that. l am wondering if with the stop and search excercise on the Uzumlu approach roads yielding nothing, might attention be better turned towards traffic coming down from the higher villages, or am l the only one to ponder on that possibility?!
-
A company in Calis will install a Canadian burglar alarm for you which is motion sensitive, break the beam inside the house and it goes off, loudly. The alarm is not run off the electricity so power cuts do not effect it.
-
Sorry to report there has been another burglary this afternoon, this time to an ex pats property behind the petrol station, the property was ransacked and items such as camera and computer were taken, the owner had gone out with friends taking their dog with them, when this occurred. There is no further info at this time.
-
Behind which petrol station? We live behind the Petrol Ofisi and it wasn't us. The only other ex-pat near us is Rindaloo and it was not her. More info needed please as no one lives behind the Yellow petrol station and no other ex pat is behind the Petrol Ofisi other than Rindi and Ourselves.
-
Hi Eric I will PM you. I obviously do not want to publish fuller personal details, without the persons concerned full permission.
-
Ok, please PM me, we are gleaning info from other sources, may not be connected but we will not know until I have your info
-
Andrew, I have e-mailed you
-
Replied Eric
-
Sent you another reply Andy
-
So was there a house behind the PO petrol station burgaled?
The reason I ask is I have a house in that area
-
Have PM'd you.
-
Yes as stated there unfortunatly was, and for clarification it was a property nearer the top of the road that runs from behind the Petrol Station, nearly into the village end of it. This area is commonly referred to rightly or wrongly as behind the petrol station by a lot of people and there are a lot of ex pats property in this area. Regards Andrew

We had a great deal of action in Ovacik today in that the Jandarma arrested 3 Kurds while they were doing an unauthorized house clearance. Turkish neighbours noticed that 3 men took goods from a foreigners house and 20 minutes later they returned to help themslves to another load. The neighbours called the Jandarma and the burglars legged it. The jandarma had a wide search of Ovacik and finally caught them. The reason I am putting this here is that they drove a white vehicle.
I am not saying they are the same ones that have been robbing in Uzumlu but lets hope they are. Please continue to take care and make sure your property is secure.
-
Lets hope it is the Bar***rds who robbed my and two other apartments on our complex yesterday.
-
That is great news Gerry, hopefully it is linked, I know our local Amir in Uzumlu has been called to go down and interview these suspects as well, so we will see.
-
I have been following this story with some interest as am currently having a house built in Uzumlu. At the moment we are living in Fethiye but hope to be moving there in June.
I am sure you are aware that the Jandarma will be increasing their presence in Uzumlu when their new station is completed in about 6 months. My understanding is that not only is this new station going to be considerably bigger but that they are also building houses for married quarters for the senior officers there.
I had already been thinking about security systems and have been introduced by friends to a family owned security company who have a good reputation here and install residential and commercial systems. I have mentioned the problems which we expats are currently having and that there was going to be a meeting soon to discuss the problems and possible solutions. They have offered to come and give advice and /or a presentation if that is what the attendees want.
What do you think??
-
Great news, at least someone's been caught. And it would be nice to think they might have been responsible for some of the break-ins here. Onwards and upwards, I hope.
-
I agree Rindaloo, it is great news. Got a meeting with Jandarma tomorrow so hopefully will get some feedback and have some good news to share a the meeting on Thursday. Fingers crossed.
-
Thank you for that Paul. Perhaps it would be best to contact Corbindallas or Dinger, who have arranged the meeting.
-
Good news from Gerry for the people of Ovacik and hopefully for those in Uzumlu as well in that they might be the same thieves. I hope that the people of Uzumlu will note his remarks in the Ovacik section of the Forum recognising the invaluable contribution made by Turkish neighbours.
-
Here here!!!!!!!
-
Is there any word on wether these were the same burglar gang?
-
Hopefully we'll know more today as the Jandarma and Baskan is attending the meeting this afternoon.
-
Thank you Fi
-
Fiona, you put a post on a few minutes ago (which, for some reason you deleted??) saying the burglars had been arrested the same day as the burglary behind the petrol station. That lady was done on Monday so has there been another burglary since then? If so, any details where etc?
-
She made a mistake, got her days all mixed up. Hence why it was deleted
-
Thanks so much to Dinger and Corbindallas for fronting the meeting today. I fully appreciate it wasn't an easy meeting, such an emotive subject. I thought they did very well. I hope the sheer quantity of people attending and the intensity of feeling has made an impression on the Jandarma and Baskan. I now feel this is something that has motion and force, we are now united and I look forward in hope that we will make positive progress.
-
Dinger and Corbindallas (Glenda & Andrew) would like to thank everyone for their support at the meeting today, the turnout was tremendous. Hopefully we put the wheels in motion for achieving a positive outcome.
-
did they give any details re connection with Ovacik burgalars?
-
No - unfortunately they do not believe there is a connection.
-
Well done and thank you Glenda and Andrew for the meeting yesterday you both must have been pleased with the turn out. You definetely had your work cut but you handled it well even if the Jandarma were a little unco-operative. Perhaps they can now see that the people in the village are not happy with the whole situation. Like rindalloo says we are all united and look forward to positive progress on the matter.
-
There has been another burglary in Ovacik. Please beware it appears that the burglars caught in Ovacik last week were only part of a gang. This is the opinion of the Olu Deniz Jandarma. They are questioning the 3 that they caught and are offering a lighter stretch in prison for the names of the other gang members.[/b]
-
Thanks Gerry when we questioned the Jandarma in Uzumlu to see if their was any connections with the break-ins here they said they did not think there was any link, this was after our local Amir went off to Oludeniz to help interview the caught 3. Thought it was a bit quick to rule out any connection especially if a gang network involved. Hopefully they keep a open mind and pursue to see if there is a link, i.e recover some stolen goods that link back or get a confession, here's hoping.
-
I was at the meeting on Thursday and good on you i think this is the way forward with regards to collaborate information. A friends Villa was broken into late Friday early saturday morning. There are six villas in this small complex known as sarnic villas Green valley. There are situated near bujac, one road in one road out. Friends of ours had taken there dog for a walk down there, and was stopped by a Jandarma foot patrol who had found that the villa had been broken into. My friend phoned me on my mobile and told me what had happened. The Jandarma was waiting when i got there. Two sets of patio doors had been forced open, after a good inspection nothing had been taken so weather the burglars where disturbed we don't know. Myself and friends also the two Jandarma soldiers checked round the other five villas and all where ok. The two Jandarma soldiers stayed there until i came back with steel bars and other materials so i could make the villa as safe as possible. The Jandarma has taken all details of what there had found, there could not have been more helpfull. But alas two hours later after we had left the area a second villa at the back of our friends was also broken into. Time around three in the afternoon, the same two Jandarma soldiers found this as there had came back to make sure everything was ok around the area. Again nothing was taken but once again good work by these two soldiers.
-
I just want to thank everyone in Uzumlu for what they are doing regarding this neighbourhood watch scheme - I think it is the only way forward. Sharing information like this I believe tha sooner or later these people will be caught. I only wish I could be there to offer you some assistance but alas I still have to work here in the UK and won't be there until March. Anyway my heartfelt thanks to everyone and for the time and effort involved.
