After spending half of my free time after work trying to be polite to people on the phone selling things I don't want, I found this web site to put a stop to most of the calls. It is a goverment site and does not cost anything, a few calls get through but if you tell them you are registered and ask how they got your number they hang up.

Another good way is to register online with www.mpsonline.org.uk to stop junk mail and www.tpsonline.org.uk to stop cold calling. Thats all you do and within 28 days it stops - and it actually works!

Thanks for this, nuisance calls are driving us mad. We get at least 2 per evening and on weekends and staying polite is increasingly hard! I'm going to give it a try right now.

Carl has a good ploy with telephone sales people. We now hardly ever get them calling.
What you have to remember is they get paid on results & often if you express any interest then your details are passed on to other direct sell companies.
Keep them talking & you get the satisfaction of wasting their time & making them lose their quotas. They are on an efficiency rating - the longer you can keep them talking the worse their rating is.
HOW? Express an interest in what they have to offer, then when they think they have you, tell them that the only way you can afford to buy their product is for them to buy something off you.
Ask for their credit card details as you'd really like to do business with them. He's tried to sell them everything from Coffins & Cemetary plots ( never tell them what you have for sale until the last possible moment) to discount catalogue goods 'we have everything you could possibly need so don't be afraid that you can't use up your £2-3000 which you want us to spend with you'.
It really works plus you get your own back & end the phone conversation on a high instead of getting annoyed.
Try it you might be pleasantly surprised.

Keith,I use mailwasher - and again, using the filter that is provided within the application - it works pretty well
I used to get HUNDREDS of unwanted p0rn and spam daily - now maybe half-a-dozen or so - to keep on top though, you have to keep updating your 'blacklist'

Also there are those that provide you with a first class prepaid envelope - great for sending their junk back to them in with a request to take you off their list.

We registered for TPS three years ago and the calls are almost non-existant now. The odd one we do get is quickly dispatched by telling them that we are TPS registered and they can be fined for not taking any notice of this - they soon hang up!
One of my friends has a hilarious way of dealing with the growing number of Indian call centres that ring up -- he just keeps insisting that he has not ordered a takeaway.- eventually they get fed up and hang up.

Just as I was reading your post the phone rang so I tried your friends trick of claiming not to have ordered any bloody pizzas :D and was he sure he had the right number etc...
Tried my best to sound angry about it - difficult for me - but after we swapped a few 4 letter words of wisdom he said I must be some kind of nutter and hung up - I made it last a good two minutes tho... lol

Been flicking through past threads(day off, nothing better to do)and found this.
Registered for both from Valentines post. Cheers Valentine looking forward to eating an evening meal without being interrupted by callers from Bombay wanting to 'save me money' or 'send me a valuable prize' I've won in a comp I've never even entered.

WE've got the ultimate way of stopping the sales calls! MOVE TO TURKEY! LOL
Since doing so we haven't had the Mormons or the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking at the door either!

The best way to Stop nuisance telephone sales & spam emails, is to not post phone numbers & email addresses on the forum.

Nah - they get your phone number from the telecom companies or they 'buy' them in from other companies who have your details.
Register with TPS and you won't get any (I'm talking to the UK'ers here)and if you do get the odd one just mention TPS and they leave you alone very quickly.
Talking Bombay - I've just been ringing the Man form the Pru to tell them about my wife's aunty recently passing away. I told her 79 year old uncle that I would sort it out for him as he hasn't a clue what to do. You guessed-- I ended up talking to some bird called Japinda from Bombay and I lost count the number of times both she and myself had to be asked to repeat things. What a laugh - I almost ordered a blo*dy takeaway she was so convincing!
Will these damn companies ever learn?

We haven't had one single cold call from anywhere since we registered and we must have saved a small forest in paper since the junk mail stopped - its brilliant! My big problem now is my company has moved our PAYROLL department to b****y India!! The answer to your question Stoop is NO!!!

We registered about 5 years ago as we were getting so many calls selling double glazing etc, also registered my fax number as it was costing a fortune in fax paper and we haven't had any such calls or faxes since then.

This really does work. Hadn't realised how much until we spent 3 weeks in USA. Got back & instead of having to force the door open over a mountain of mail (even after a week we used to have a problem) we got in & none of the mail was junk.
Just thought I'd bring this back to the top so others can benefit.

We also registered when the topic was forst posted and we now have no unsolicited phone calls. The only thing I will say is that once donating to certain charities they then feel they have they right to keep bothering me for even more money, so they do slip through the TPS system.
