Just thought I d share what is probably a middle aged ,Top Gear watching bloke thing but have just got a turntable for the first time in years and dsuted off the vinyl in the loft.
My taste is more eclectic than I thought but have spent most of today listening to Bobby Darins greates,The Wall by Pink Floyd,Stevie Wonders songs in the key of life,Joe Cocker Stingray and as I write the briliant Elvis Costellos King of America.I was about to transfer them to MP3 and clean them up but something just tells me that they are better as they are,the wya they were meant to be,the sound that gives you nostalgia.I recenlty got the Beatles collection of digitally remastered clean up stuff but hae put it to one side in favour of the tinny, sctrachy crackly excellent original recordings.
I intend to listen to all ofmy records again then I will start on cassette tapes !
If anyone is interested I will keep posting what I have been listening to and maybe swap thoughts on music as its one of my most favourite things in life.
-
Nice idea. This might interest you. I've never really been a Moby fan but I gave this a listen due to one of my friends being one of the backing singers. Nice sound if you like the Blues and Laura Dawn has a distinctive style.
You can here all the album at the bottom of the article:

I agree a lovely voice.I have his album Play hich although electro/techno is style samples loads of old blues tracks.I love the blues so my next album to listen to willbe a 23 disc anthology covering, country and urban blues.I ll let you know if its as good as I remembe, some of the recordings are from the 30's!
-
Please do - I won't miss an opportunity to plug my good friend Jamie Rae who is one of the backing singers in The Little Death. If you like country/blues/easy have a listen to her singing live at the Iridium in New York City. This is a cover of 'You Don't Know Me' and in my opinion she deserves the ovation at the end of what was an excellent set.
The guy on lead is Jerry Cherry - also worth a look up on youtube.

Love your post Steve, I took ages to move over from Vinyl to CD, in fact I still argue that something is lost in the 'clean' digital sound. However, I look at the two Ipods we have and feel amazed that the some of the songs we now download might be 30 years old but will stay in perfect condition for the rest of time no matter how many times they are played, unlike my copy of Motown Chartbusters Volume 1. God help our Grand Children !!
Get yourself one of those turntable to MP3 things and save that musical history on vinyl
-
I must agree that some of the digital sound is just too good and quite sanitsed. One of my fav cd's for raw sound is The Beatles Live at the BBC. I love the early Beatles stuff - before they went stereo.
-
I think it's more than losing the 'feel' of vinyl. it's the whole experience. Obviously my kids have no experience of vinyl(being 9 years old) but they don't really have experience of CD either. I spent a short time working for CBS Records (dull job, great discounts) and this download age really takes away a whole side of buying music. Even the smell of vinyl (ok there was a lot of vinyl to smell at CBS) was something we have now lost.
CD's are no better in a way - in "my day" you bought a single and it was small, you bought an album and you got a bigger thing for your money! Now you get nothing at all, a digital transfer - you don't even get a record shop carrier bag with one of those!
Maybe we're just getting old :D
-
The beauty of the digital revolution is the acres of wall space you save in housing your music collection.
-
With 78's you can make fruit bowls.
Recycling aint new 8)

My mate decorated his ceiling with old cd's - looked rather nice.

A terpsicorian delight there Alan.
Any one remember The running, Jumping, Standing still film which had Spike milligan
placing a 78 rmp record on a tree stump and running round it with a hand held stylus on the disc
very funny, have been trying to find the clip on U tube but to no avail

Stoop listened to Jamie Rae what a lovely voice and good songs a talented lady,I also looked up Jerry Cherry and he can play !Scunner I thinkIm with you about the feel of vinyl,it was also about saving up for an album looking forward to reading all of the sleeve notes, sometimes a lyric sheet or booklet and then the fantastic artwork. All of tis before you listened to music as it was meant to be.Dont get me wrong I like lots of newstuff which has been recorded for the digitla age which sounds just as right on CD or MP3 so I suppose everything has its time.Today "Country and City Blues" from 1931 - 1947 ,Big Bill Broonzy,Big Joe Williams,,Judge Riley,Tampa Red,Washboards Sam,Sleepy John Estes. The music is great and the names just as good !
-
Cheers Steve - I'll pass your kind words on to her. The voice did it for me when I heard her singing at Ellen's Stardust Diner in NYC about 3 years ago. Lovely girl. It's the first time I've seen her sing with that line up - however Jerry did play when she was backing Chubby Checker a few months back. Yes he can play a little.

I had a similar experience recently Steve, I purchased an old Proton for the princely sum of £100(!) and I now have a tape player in my car! I dug out all my old tapes and absolutely love going out driving now. Have just worked my way through the best of Blondie, my Two Tone collection, all my 80's music and having a great time!
-
Here's a couple more Steve - first Jamie Rae from 2007 (seems like yesterday to me) with her first ever video:

Just listening to Jelly Roll Morton,Louis Armstrong,Duke Ellington ,Count Basie on "When Jazzmen Play The Blues" ver classy.Next set I think I 'll delve into the 80's,which should be fun.
-
I have an original 1928 recording of Oh Didn't He Ramble by Jelly Roll Morton which I bought many years ago for the princely sum of 1d.
It has the immortal opening lines "Ashes to ashes , dust to dust , if the women don't get you the liquor must "
They don't write em like that any more.:D
Delving into the eighties will bring you to Stevie Ray Vaughan
-
.. and one more from Jamie Rae - I just love this song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8ww9ygU7pM
-
Just got Stevie Ray Vaughans complete discography which I will listen to with relish.I had one or two things by him in the past but had forgot about him.
-
Steve, If you get the chance check out the 1983 sessions with Stevie Ray & Albert king, master & pupil
the chemistry between them is pure magic,

-
Mike, listening to it as I type,Blues at Sunrise is really special.
-
Just listening to Pride & Joy that is fantastic, even the piano player is brilliant !
-
When I need a pick me up I listen to The Sky is Crying, the quality of the guitar playing, especially the two step bends takes my breath away every time.
-
Mike and Steve perhaps I should also add an A to my name then we can all "Take the A Train"
Wound down my evening by listening to Miles Davies' Sketches in Spain. 8)
-
Here we go I am now well into the 80's just done Ultravox Rage in Eden actually by way of late 70's and The Rich Kids(see the connection,Midge Ure)Now listening to Welcome to The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Some say the 80's was the time that music forgot however I happen to think there was still some class around.

Not much class though Steve. The 80's seemed to be a blip in the advancement of music. I blame Stock, Aitkin and Waterman for churning out trash year on year!!
Can't beat the 60's for me, I'm trapped in a timewarp and don't want to get out:D
-
I agree about the 80's
The era that swung like a rusty gate ;)
-
Ok down on the 80's lets try a few;Elvis Costello,Ultravox,Duran,Spandau,Soft Cell,Madness,Specials,Heaven 17,Human League,Paul Young,Madonna,INXS.Quite a few to pick from there must be something good.
Paul Young next for me,let you know how it sounds soon.
-
Elvis Costello's the nearest to WD40 that would work on my gate. 8)
-
What about Guns n Roses,Bruce Springsteen,Def Leppard,The Cars and although not a great decade there were some cracking one hit wonders;Korgis Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime, Gary Numan Cars,Sugar Hill Gang Rapper's Delight,Haircut 100 Love Plus One,Kajagoogoo Too Shy ,Dexy's Midnight Runners Come on Eileen, Blow Monkeys Digging Your Scene ,Midnight Oil Beds are Burning etc I 've got these all on single which must tell me that the albums were crap so maybe not such a great decade.Unfortunately I've run out of decades for Vinyl that I have so will have to go to classics(of mine )next time
-
Steve A, with a few exceptions your list proves my point. ;)
I used to feel sorry for my kids as they went through the 80s music scene
fortunately it did them no real damage ;)
it was such a relief when they put Duran Duran behind them and turned to Faith no more
I knew then that that they would recover. 8)
-
One of the joys of having eclectic tastes ,in this instance music, as we appear to have is that we can get pleasurable discoveries from each other in the areas where we overlap. 8):D
-
My tastes are certainly eclectic I like what I like so they say, currently listening to Mishima soundtrack by Philip Glass(1985)
-
Not on vinyl but well worth a listen and a view. I know I mentioned it earlier in the thread but this is Moby and his new band The Little Death appearing live on US TV. Wonderful vocals from Laura Dawn and our very own Jamie Rae backing her.
I like this sound:

Sorry to those in Turkey but the album is on itunes I think :)

This guy is interesting and this weekend he's doing a duet with Jamie Rae with their new band 'King Hamelin'. He seems to haves some middle east influence (although he has a French father and Peruvian mum) and with Jamie playing drums for the first time on stage (after taking lessons for quite some time) and stating that it's going to be rather 'hard rock' and a bit loud - it should be an interesting night.
It seems he's a bit of a talent and can pretty much pick up any instrument any play it. Quite a character as well judging by this video he made with Benjy King:
