Title: Please can you help?
Post by: Pi55y on January 18, 2010, 14:40:03 PM
Calis Carnival, Embrace and Animal Aid charities are joining  together in an appeal to make life a little easier for two local children, who are both very ill, and for their families.  We are not asking for money but simply for a small donation of store cupboard dry goods. But first a little about the children -

The first is Mehmet, a 7-year-old boy who has been battling with leukaemia for 4 years.  Mehmet who lives with his mum, dad, elder brother and little sister has suffered a relapse and was looking at a further 2 years  chemotherapy. However doctors have advised that this is no longer effective in treating his cancer and treatment has been suspended. Doctors are now hoping to give him a further bone marrow transplant but a match has not yet been found.  As the family have had to pay for some of Mehmet's treatment and because his dad who is self employed,  has been unable to work regularly as he has been constantly taking Mehmet to Antalya for treatment, the family and Mehmet's grandparents are in considerable debt.

The family are very proud and will not accept financial help but fortunately Fethiye International Group (FIG) have paid the Bag Kur fees (insurance) for the father for the last 3 months which enables them to get Mehmets prescriptions.  However the family have very little to live on and struggle to buy basics and poor little Mehmet has no treats.

The second youngster is a local 7-year-old girl with brittle bone disease.  Because of her condition she is unable to attend school (she suffered many fractures during her short time there) and she  has to be carried around by her mother and has to be taught at home. She too is receiving treatment at Antalya hospital and doctors are hoping that her new treatment will be successful.  Calis Carnival  charity are looking into providing  a wheelchair to help the family out but in the meantime the family too are suffering financially as well as emotionally and the little girl has a pretty miserable life.  Again the family are very proud and do not want financial help but they do need emotional support and a few treats for their daughter.

Our three charities are looking to provide lovely big food hampers for both families with lots of nice treats, games and toys for the two children plus their brothers and sisters. We will then visit the two children and give them the hampers so the parents' pride remains intact. The children will have the nice  treats and goodies and the family will have the food which will help ease their day to day problems for a few weeks.

To start off these hampers we would like to ask anyone living locally to have a search through their kitchen cupboards to see if they have any dry goods - rice, pasta, sugar, tea, tinned or packet goods - anything that would be suitable for a Turkish family.  We will then add to this with treats for the children.

If you are able to donate any goods for these hampers please drop these off at the Embrace Coffee Morning at the Bambu/Bus Stop Restaurant on Wednesday morning 11.00-1.00.

You can also drop items off at the Calis Carnival Committee stall or the Animal Aid Stall at the Calis Car Boot Sale on Sunday morning.

Thank you for reading this. I am now off to sort through my kitchen cupboards to see what I can find  :).

Feznut, your comment I think will upset a lot of people, if you do not like something that appears on the forum or a cry for some help or assistance as in the case now on this thread, maybe it would be better if you just kept your thoughts to yourself.  I may have misinterpreted your comments but to me they have come accross as very negative.
I do not live in Turkey just holiday there, but when I can make a donation or something touches my heart then I try my utmost to help.
If a thread does not relate to me or I do not understand the reasons behind it I leave it to those that do.

I wish Piffy every success in helping these two families, if I was in Calis area now I would definately raid my cupboards for something nice.

No "it" never ends
Look around and there are people in need of help all over the world;
However bad things might seem in ones life there are always others far worse off and coping too.
To change the world is too much for most of us. To help improve our own little corner of it within our means is all we can try and do.
A small thing to those who contribute makes a big difference in the life of those who would be receiving help.
They will also know people care which matters when we are suffering and struggling.
In the future they too will remember the difference it made and assist others - who in turn help others and thus one small act ripples out to make the world a nicer place.

Surely its not hard to open ones heart and root through the cupboard!

No hubblebubble it certainly won't be for the vast majority of people who read, and contribute to, this forum.

I'm not sure about the tone of feznut's comment but I know for sure that if we were in turkey now I would certainly be contributing what I could to help these two familes and thanking god for my two very healthy children.

It will never end, but those of us who can, should always give... My Mother was a generous person always giving to Charity (even gave away my Wedding Dress to help a girl who really needed it).   She always used to say whatever she gave away she got back two fold and I know exactly what she meant, by this and it was not money.

I know for a fact that the father of the little girl has been extremely reluctant to ask for anything he has not provided himself. It has taken a lot for this situation to be reached where they are being given help, which they richly deserve.

Charity like its sister Mercy, blesses him who gives as well as him who receives.

Remember none of us know what is around the corner, however unlikly it may seem at present, any of us could need help in the future.

Please help these poor children if you can.

What hurts the most?

A little 7 year old boy who has suffered the pain of leukaemia for more years of his life than he hasn't, and faces the pain of at least two more years of chemotherapy, or the pain of the poor expat who moved to his country and has to read requests to help children like him.

The topic titles nearly always make it quite obvious when a request for donations are being made. You can ignore those ones if you aren't interested in helping the community you moved into.

Absolutely astounding, you think you've heard it all...

This is Calis Beach Forum at its best, forget about the price of Efes for a moment, put the your hand in your pocket and just give something
to probably the one of most worthy of causes and I dont mean all the regular names I mean everyone!

We will take anything for the hamper at the Animal Aid stand on Sunday
as will the Calis Carnival stand, lets do it!!

also if anyone in the UK or anywhere else wants to help you can use the Animal Aid paypal account and we will turn donations into provisions, there is nothing in the Paypal account as we emptied yesterday so anything donated over the next two weeks will be considered as a donation for the childrens cause unless otherwise stated.  animalaidfethiye@hotmail.com  make sure you send it as a gift it will then come with no charges attached.

The A Team ;)

Feznut your comment beggars belief.
I will donate some money later via paypal as I can not personally be in Turkey to give goods, if I was then no question about it.
These poor children and their families makes me realise how lucky I am.

It is really very kind of everyone to give their support and offers of donations and as stated in my first post, we are looking to provide food hampers in the first instance which will help the families concerned to get by for a while, as well as including some goodies and treats for the children and their brothers and sisters.

Because the two families concerned  are very proud, we are playing this low key at the moment so are not looking to make an enormous gesture, but just letting them know that people are there for them and we will try and give them what emotional support we can.

Because of this we are not actually asking you for money, although any  donations offered are always acceptable, as besides helping these two youngsters, there are many other children in the local area who are in need, in one way or another, so any donation will certainly go to a deserving cause.

Thanks to everyone for your offers and support and we would ask that those of you in the local area, have a root around your cupboards to see what you think might be suitable for a Turkish family.  Please don't forget that there will be a donation box for store cupboard goods at the Embrace Coffee Morning tomorrow outside Bambu bar and that both Animal Aid and Calis Carnival Committee will have goods donation boxes on their stalls at the Calis Car Boot Sale on Sunday.

Pookie: I will let you know about the wheelchair once we have spoken to the family to see exactly if one is needed and if so, the type required.  :)

A huge, huge thank you to everyone who donated goods and toys for the two hampers at the car boot sale today. All three charities have been overwhelmed at the response and kindness of people.  We also received some money donations which will be used to buy fresh fruit and vegetables to add to these hampers.

There will be one last collection for this cause at the Embrace Coffee Morning on Wednesday at the Bus Stop/Bambu bars in Calis.  We will then sort out what has been donated and divide it equally between both families.   A massive thank you :D

A huge thanks to everyone who donated to the food and gift hampers. Here is a picture of what you donated in the space of the 1 week appeal. Just to give you an idea of the size of the boxes (as the picture does not do them justice) they are huge egg boxes about 3 foot x 2 foor each.

In addition to the dry goods and gifts, we filled yet another box with fresh fruit and veg, eggs, cheese and meat and also purchased other essentials like soap powder, oil, nappies and baby food.

Yesterday, four boxes were delivered to Mehmet (the little boy with leukaemia) and his family, who were extremely grateful for the goods, which will help see them through the next couple of months. We would like to pass on the family's thanks to everyone who donated for their kindness and generosity :D

Kevin, that is very kind of you and you are right there are some very caring people on the forum. If you are looking to make a financial donation to little Mehmet's family then you can do so through FIG (Fethiye International Group). If you check out Sue Tekin's post (she is the manager of FIG) on this site at
{A Link to an old CBF topic was here - no longer available}33669 you will see that she has set up a paypal account to help them with their financial problems.

If you prefer your donation to go towards food for either Mehmet and his family or for treats for little Irem, the girl with brittle bones, then it can be paid either into the Calis Carnival Paypal account which you can find on the home page of our website www.caliscarnival.com or through the Animal Aid paypal account (see Animal Aid section on the forum for details).  Both Calis Carnival and Animal Aid do not give money but buy things that are required.

Thanks  :)
