A panel of architect's and designers has included Inverness in the nominations for the ugliest city in the UK.
Apparently Urban Realm, the architectural magazine behind the awards, promotes the event as "a force for good and a real motivator" to transform cities. And the winner will be decided by a public vote later this year.
Inverness may not be perfect but I cannot believe that so called experts consider it to be amongsT the ugliest in the UK.

H - is this too much of a coincidence or could this be connected to the rumour that a certain Mr Scunner lives nearby???
Ian ;)
Ps They should come to Rochdale!!!!
Pps I bet the council are already flapping and planning how to spend your council taxes wisely????
-
Sorry to say, but when I was sent to the rigs in the Cromarty Firth I would fly to Inverness and get a hire car - when escaping the rig it was usually 7am with a 4pm flight so I used to drive all over the area to kill time. I remember thinking how horrible Inverness was, nothing like I imagined it would be.
-
Have to agree, they made a right mess of Inverness, looks lovely from a distant, but the Shopping Centre is horrible.

What planet are you on Ian!!! I'm closer to England than I am to Inverness!
-
If it's North of the Border - its all the same to me :D
-
OK it's not a Georgian Terrace in Bath, but can you really describe this as ugly. It's much like any other shopping precinct

My lasting impression of Inverness doesn't resemble that photograph at all.
-
Yeh!!!! ugly ain't it:D:D ;)
-
well I think Inverness is ok
-
You wanna go to Worthing same as picture.:(

A beautiful city, the capitol of the highlands. The new shopping centre leaves much to be desired, but the castle, riverside and older Crown St area is still beautiful to me. My mothers birthplace and I have spent many holidays in the area.

Buddy says it all, the older parts are very nice, the new stuff, like most modern builds is terrible.

Even though Inverness town centre is awful I have to say that Stirling town centre is much worst.
-
On my travels I have found some wonderful Scottish towns. I thought Stirling was not bad, for terrible you have to go to Glenrothes or Leven :)
-
Yes, I used to live in Markinch before they built the Glenrothes town centre shopping mall.. What a shock we got when returned a few years later that is a carbuncle, Prince Charles would have a fit.
-
Hilary has never been to Scotland and is starting to pester me to there for a tour sometime. Nice to know we have such a wide range of carbunkles from which to choose. Perhaps I will show her this thread and we can go and drink Guinness in Ireland instead - which neither of us have done.
-
Yes I'd avoid Scotland. Where I live is so carbunculous that it's best only to photograph it at night

We're off to Ireland in April, looking forward to trying a traditional lunch of oysters and half a pint of Guinness. Partly.

I guess it will be a bit better once the floods have gone down.

That's the motorway

Airdrie doesn't look too great to be honest either. Funny how I never stay long there...

I thought Stirling and Inverness were very similar in design.
That was a few years ago and I think Stirling has been extended. Can't speak for Inverness it is years since I was up there.
