Title: types of beer (and other types of alcoholic)
Post by: laus211 on January 26, 2010, 19:05:03 PM
Okay, I did say when i introduced myself that there would be questions - so here is the first!!
My mate (male, 45, just in case some where getting really strange visions) only really likes lager such as tennants (for the scottish amongst you) or carling - at a push bud or something similar. Will he like the must discussed Efes or are we in for a miserable holiday with him complaining and searching through Calis beach for something that he will approve of. The rest of us will drink pretty much anything - wine/beer/cider/vodka/whisky oh and my husband and best friend are also partial to Asbach brandy if that is available.
Thanks in advance
Hic

I'm sure he will be able to 'suffer' Efes for a few weeks. I drink bottled lager at home and get on fine with Efes (I even buy it from Tesco when it's on offer).

I think there are one or two other lagers on offer and Efes is also available on draft.

I can't comment on the brandy as I rarely drink spirits.

You can get Millar and a couple of others easily. Efes is different, some like, some don't. I don't really. Maybe take your male, 45 mate to Wetherspoons, he can try it there  :)

I can drink Tennents and Efes.

I always think the beer is better in the country it was made in.

Morning All
Thanks for all the replies. Can't say I've seen Efes in our local Wetherspoons (was in there for male mate 45's 45th birthday  last night). He is partial to a pint of wife beater - my brother calls it that too and he is in the midlands - so male mate 45 should be okay in regards to beer. He also prefers Smirnoff vodka so will we be able to satisfy that requirement for him?? So demandng I know - and they talk about women being hard work!!
Cheers

Efes is a strong German/Belgian type beer I think (5% versus our usual 3.4% Gnat's Pee we drink at home) Stella is referred to as "Wife Beater" here in the Midlands in certain places.

Oh by the way, when in Spain San Miguel is referred to as Senorita Beater:D

Some bars sell Tuborg lager which I find less gassy & not a strong tasting as Efes but same strength 5%.You can also get bottled bud & millers light in some bars.Raki is like pernod & like Cenk says will make you sleep well & probably a bad head if you have a few

I think you'll find that Efes is an above average pilsner made with malted barley, hops and rice, not a chemical beer !

If by Belgian you mean Stella - I think you will find it's made on license in the UK by Whitbread.

As for Efes - it is a premium lager and not all chemicals at all.

Any of you that have spent time in Belgium and Germany know indeed they do produce some of the finest beers. By that token so does the UK but I wouldn't put Carling in that category. What I'm saying is Efes is akin to what you find in everyday bars served to the masses in Belgium and Germany.

I wouldn't say Efes is a blindingly good drink (although drink enough of it and you will go blind:D) by any means but hey, I've drunk much worse around the world. In South America there are german style beers that taste more like paraquat!!

No - far to expensive. It would have to be no more than 1ytl!

Anyway - off to Thailand today to sample lots of Singha, a little Tiger and maybe a few Chang. Last one is a bit strong though (6.3%) and it tends to knock me out a bit quick  ;)

Funny I had girlfriends with similar names when I was in Thailand,Singha was a little Tiger and I think it maybe rude to say Chang !

My personal preference was Vole, really nice flavour although I don't drink lager much.

Felt sorry for the liquidised voles mind you.

I also like the Efes Dark, nearest thing to proper beer here.
