I think it's an absolutely wonderful piece of art, but £ 58 m, I don't think so. After all a philandering Premier League footballer is alegedly worth far more than that.

There maybe a whole new thread here on what constitutes "good" art.

(A bit like the discussion on HRH the Prince of Wales view on architecture which we have not had yet :)

I don't pretend to understand any of it. What I would like to know is, if it's that good why didn't it sell for (say) £100,000 - that is a ridiculous amount for a skinny man in bronze. Why 580x more?

because someone else didn't understand it either, but was too embarrased to say so, so thought he'd pay a ridiculous price for it that suggests to the world that he IS intelligent and sees more than we see, and that we are the thickies because we don't understand....(I think I know what I'm trying to say....!)

I wonder if they could have lived without it and spent some of the 58 million on helping in Haiti or somewhere else where a skinny metal man is not important right now either.

Some banker must have used most of this year's bonus on this.

Apparently, most of these expensive pieces that are sold at auction are going to Russia, there are so many millioniares their now.
I read the Antiques Trade papers and am always shocked at the awful "modern art" that seems to be making small fortunes every week.
A lot of rich people think that putting money into Art (whether they like it or not) is better than having it invested in banks etc.,

They have a lot of sense and business savvy which is why they are advised to buy Art at the moment because it's the best investment that can be made. However, there is an Artist called Michael Landy who is, at the moment destroying millions of pounds worth of art, from people like Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, he is asking people do donate art and when he is finished he is going to put it all into a landfill sight. One might argue that it would be better to gather all these pieces and auction them for Charity rather that destroy them. Well business savvy perhaps, but I certainly wouldn't want to invest £58m of my fortune (that's most of it lol) into an antique or 'work of art'. What happens if he wants to realise his asset - there's no guarantee that it'll auction for more at all, and one of the bidders won't be in for it this time, the new & current owner.

Going off topic towards Haiti rather than art, there was an interview with a Haitian woman in the days just after the earthquake, on BBC News. Sitting amongst the rubble, she complained about the current President, who she claimed had promised to improve the quality of life for all Haitians when he came to power. She then raised her arms and looked around herself at the collapsed buildings in a "look at the state of this place" way.

These Presidents eh? Never deliver what they promise.

As Giacometti was a very well respected and well bought Swiss sculptor who died in 1966 and this work has made so much money I predict in the not so distant future another piece of his work will come on the market and make even more.  It's the way the Art world is going at the moment and there seems to be an endless supply of people with money to spend on Art.:-\

Presidents!!!!!!!!Deliberate misuse of power.

I would like to know who paid that amount for a work of art as I have an ugly ornament that I could be persuaded to sell if the price  was right.: :)

Not only men, animals too.  His work can always be recognised by the thin creatures he sculpted.

Business sense it may be Jacqui, but 58million? I hope my opinion doesnt offend anyone, apologies in advance if it does. I too love art but i just think that if the person who paid that gave even half that amount towards helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves it would go a long way. That said, i also think that if everyone who is extremely wealthy contributed some of their fortune they could possibly go some way towards helping the suffering of millions around the world, haiti is a good example but also those in 3rd world countries too. If i had 58million, i know i could give half of it to helping others and still have a fantastic life with more money than i could spend in a lifetime. I went to Africa some years ago and saw poverty first hand- it was heartbreaking :(
