I've been doing some research prompted by Brian (Tribalelder) and here are some links to the interest rates of the banks that I could find that made this info easily available on-line.
Finansbank
http://www.finansbank.com.tr/en/banking/consumer-banking/deposit-products/interest-rates.aspx
AK Bank
http://www.akbank.com/tl-interest-rates.aspx
Garanti Bank
http://www.garantibank.com/banking/retail/interest_rates_commissions_fees/time_deposit_interest_rates.html
Deniz Bank
http://www.denizbank.com/EN/ratesfees/deposit/DepositAccountRates.htm
I found Fortis and Ing bank web sites difficult to navigate and no apparent list of current rates available.
I hope this is helpful to anyone who doesn't want all their eggs in one basket :)
-
It would be nice to have some eggs to spread around at the moment Nichola :)
-
I know what you mean but I know some people rely on their interest to live here and would be awful to end up with nothing...
It's all a bit of a hassle though but better than having to go back to the Uk penniless - I know people who rely on benefits in the UK and its a real struggle - whatever the media would have us all believe!
This is all so potentially serious it seems strange that there hasn't been much of a response to Brians thread about Greece and Finansbank. Maybe everyone is spending their time rushing around the banks opening new accounts.
I would like to know if anyone has opened an online account with a Turkish bank without having to go into a branch???
-
Does anyone know if Yapi credit do online banking & also what is their interest rate lately?
Thanks.
-
Thanks for that Nichola......useful to have most of the info in the one place :)
-
Yapi Kredi
http://www.yapikredi.com.tr/en-US/MainPage.aspx
couldn't find anything about interest rates though... didn't think much of theie web site
Seems most banks have online banking in English
Is Bank
Is Bank don't show their rates either in case anyone is wondering...
Deniz Bank
Note about Deniz Bank they did need to have govt help (bail out money) recently
-

No - you need your
1.passport
2.residence visa if you have one
3.Turkish tax number
4. an address in Turkey - can be rented or owned
Opening an an line account
To answer my own question about opening an online account the answer is you need to have an account in the branch already and have provided all of the above information for the banks records.
Best monthly accounts for interest are
Garanti e account
AK Bank Internet or Phone account
Both at 8.75%
-
I think you didnt see our rate :)
-
You do not need an address in Turkey to open a bank account.
-
this is right. Adress could be from England also. We just need an adress proof like english driving licence.
-
Last year our friends provided a utility bill as proof of UK address and took that along with passports and tax numbers to the bank to open an account. They were simultaneously given an on line account
-
We are still getting 9% at Akbank.
-
I thought Garanti at 7.5% was low.
-
If you do take a utility bill from UK for proof of identity make sure it is less than three months old; guess what, ours was just over and they (HSBC) wouldn't accept it. You live and learn.
-
As Alper says his bank Fortis take driving license & passport for id.Alper is also good for banking service & advice
-
I,m with Zirat as they guarantee the full amount you have in your account, not just 50,000 and they are paying 8.65 on 35 day account, would rather get a little less interest and full peace of mind.
-
Hi :)
All banks in Turkey only can guarantee 50.000 TL per person.(100.000 TL for joint acc.) the only difference of the banks is owners :) As you can follow from news Fortis bank is owned by BNP Paribas which is the biggest european bank.
In case of any help please do not hesitate to contact even if you are not my customer

As Alper says the Bank do not guarantee your money, the goverment do, I am sure if a bank went bust tomorrow, the goverment would pay out in a couple of days!!!! ;)

i was actually intersted in ovaciksaras post with the zirat bank who say they are guaranteeing all her money not just 50k.
-
Which bank do you work for banker?
-
Have just spoken to the manager of Zirat, and she says because main bank of Turkey, they really do guarantee all your money, and have now got it in writing, so a load off my mind, can,t think of anything worse than checking 3 or 4 different banks every month. The only problem with Zirat is to get internet banking you have to be a Turkish citizen, but my banker just rings me.
-
Having worked for a bank I can guarantee you that no bank can give you a guarantee that they will give you all your money back. It is a ludicrous guarantee unless it is 100% guaranteed by the government.Throughout the banking world limited guarantees are given by governments. These guarantees are paid for through a levy that is charged to every bank.
Do you think that everyone would have got every penny back if the government had not bailed out Northern Rock.
If a bank has not got the funds to pay back its depositors then it cannot pay them back and all the guarantees that it gives are not worth the paper they are written on.
-
thats the way i see it...but am not always right!!

Hi Sarah :)
If you have a bank book for Ziraat Bank explanation is at the back middle and SDIF says;in domestic branches deposit accounts of new TL,foreign exchange currency or other accounts linked to precious metals are insured up to an amount of 50.000 TL per person, in each deposit bank.
regards.

Personnaly I would not keep my money in a bank where the Manager does not understand the law, or puts a different slant on it.. :o

you better pin that managers of yours down sarah!!
-
Why? The manager of Zirat can say what she likes, she won't be around to justify it if Zirat go pop [:o]
-
Why scunner...well because the zirat bank is wholly owned by the government.
so there may be a certain ammount of credablity about what the manager says.
would be interesting to see what has been put in writing.
-
I have had a letter from the Government confirming that the money in my account in HSBC is guaranteed up to 50,000 TL. Suggest you ask the manager at Zirat to get you similar letter which reflects her statement.
-
This is written at all bank books :)
-
Does anyone have a contact name at Ak Bank please [?]

Yes I was aware. Which is why I was surprised to receive a letter last year which I had to sign for before the postman would hand over.
The Zirat manager is obviously varying the terms and I would want a letter from the bank to confirm this.

Sorry to ask a probably already asked question - but as yet I dont have an account here, does the number of days shown by interest rates mean you have to give that many days notice to withdraw money? Or are there limited monthly withdrawals? Havent got much to invest but seems silly to be earning nothing on my money in England when the rates are better here. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Tracy
-
If you have high interest account you can only pay in or withdraw on maturity day otherwise you loose interest accrued to that date. The other option is to put cah in daily interest account but this pays interest at a lower rate but you can pay in or withdraw any day.
-
Withdrawals are ok,but only until 1pm after which your money is re invested to give you the interest you enjoy.
-
Thanks for your responses. So I can make any number of withdrawals before 1pm? Not that I'm planning to but just need to know I'd have access to my money.
