Hi, I am from number 5 Symbola apartments' block A. I just wanted to get an idea of what the resident's long terms car parking experiences were like? Is it possible and is it safe to leave a car parked outside the apartments for months on end? Reason I am asking is I am thinking of buying a car to use when I am there instead of hiring - To be honest I am not even sure if whether buying is a better option than hiring! - Anyway, any pearls of wisdom will be highly appreciated...Thanks.

Hi Tim, I think you need a residents visa to purchase a car in Turkey, also if it is used for limited periods and left for months on end it could be more cost effective to hire one as and when you need it as rental isn't too bad if you shop around. You also don't need to lose any sleep worrying about it when you're not there.

We are in Forest Hills next door and have neighbours living there all the time with car on the street. No problems.

Hi Tim, we hire a car every time we are over and find it is quite cost effective. I don,t know if I would like to leave a car for months on end unless someone was looking after it for us. (Too much of a worry) We also have an apartment in Symbola, we might be neighbours as we are in block A also - apartment 6.

Going by the winter rains I would not leave a car here for a long period of time. I would have thought that the rain, hail and cold would do it no good and you would have problems every time you come over to get it started again. Not an expert, just my thoughts!
Are you new to Symbola? I don't recall hearing from you before!

Here's some rough budget costs over 5 years:
Half decent car (Starts everytime you go over) £3000
Tax MOT Insurance servicing costs unexpected repairs £1000
Total (Minimal repairs / expenditure) £4000
Hire car (Class B, 4 door, aircon, 5 seats, NEW, CDW)for 5.71 weeks per year
Total (Peace of mind)£4000
The decision is based on two factors, one amaount of time you spend over there (fixed) and two predicted cost of repairs to purchased car (variable).
I know why you have thought of purchasing, as I have to. It's a notion, but not necessarily a practical one. I always hire. There is another cost and that is the transfer from the airport. If you hire from there you will have no transfer costs (petrol only).

Cracking, concise advice Steve, but does it really cost £700 per week to hire a car ? (£4000 / 5.71 weeks), I cannot comment as I have never hired a car, but have been quoted an average of £25 per day, obviously you have fuel on top, and I guess it depends on the car (size, quality etc.).

Friends of ours hire a car from Cem at Cafe Pazar while they are here, 600TL per month. We own our car, cost about £600 per year for everything.

In this topic we have one hire car for £4000 for 5.71 weeks rental, and 600 TL for a month. That's £100 a day, or £8.37 a day.
Both can't be right :)

Ah yes, I see it now.
He's forgotten about including depreciation in his car buying calculations. A car costing £3000 over there would depreciate over the five year term, possibly as much as twenty or thirty pence.

Cost of a hire car for us is £20 per day for a decent size car. This includes getting picked up at Dalaman and taken back to Dalaman. Not a bad deal in my mind!!

I bought the flat from Manzara in Aug2008. Never stayed there yet!
The whole place is empty at the moment, so i have a massive task on my hand when i get there with furnishing etc.

Hi Tim, we are your next door neighbours, will be over in April for a week. Look forward to meeting you at some point. D block is seemingly well on which means our stunning view over Fethiye will be no longer. Niall & Leasa
