Almost everyone would instantly recognise the building in question, but can you get it from the following quote from a neighbour. Another clue is, you may well know it, but it isn't there anymore...
"During the time it was the Country Club, someone was shot during a row; and as a nightclub it was truly awful. It seemed to change its name about once a week. It was also a popular after-match haunt of some of the younger members of the cricket club during the 1980s. Suffice to say that it loomed large in the life of the young people of the village throughout the eighties:although most will deny having ever gone there."

The Crossroads Motel [?]
-
No, that was made of paper H
I shall answer "yes or no" questions, with "yes" or "no" :D
-
...and would almost anyone recognise the Crossroads Motel? I wouldn't :D
-
M.C.C. : :)
-
Is it a fictional place
-
It isn't around anymore - it was a real place, but you would know it as a fictional place. Very poor yes/no answer that :D
-
Did it have a swimming pool which I could have used.
-
With those trunks? [:o]
No
-
is it in Scotland
-

-

Ahhhh
You are like my kids, I say "I'm thinking of a number, you can ask questions to find it but I will only answer yes or no"
"Is it 1?"
"no"
"Is it 2?"
"no"
"Is it 3...."
-
Ahhhhh but do they have designer swimwear. ;)
Meanwhile, back at this allegedly famous building...........
-
It is more famous than the buildings you have suggested, that is for sure :D
-
is it in the uk
-
Yes :)
-
Keith - this is doing my head in ! Sounds like a " Midsomer Murders" location !
-

Is it 4
No
Is it 5
No
Is it Nelson Mandela House?
No lol
Although the idea of a 60s inner city tower block actually being a Country Club is a good one :D
-
Unfortunately, in its fictional form, views of herds of wildebeast were not available from the bedroom windows.
-
Or indeed in it's 'real' form, either at the time (because this Torquay hotel was actually in Buckinghamshire) or now (because it burned down in 1979).
Well done Colwyn :)
-
That was one of my first thoughts but I could not relate it to any of the descriptions given.
Could you refrain from the obvious answer and provide some explanation
-
Yes - well done Colwyn ! Clever puzzle that was driving me bonkers !
-
Erm
Apart from being used for two short stints as the 'external' Fawlty Towers, it was pretty much a craphole - is that the explanation you were after? :D

After the fire
-
Ok, as that was "so much fun", here's another (please don't answer if you know, Colwyn :) )
Nelson Mandela House was one of the answers given, and Colwyn gave the correct answer. What do they have in common? (That's Nelson Mandela House & Colwyn).
-
both in Peckham?
-
No, Colwyn is probably our most famous member from Bristol. Definitely in the top 10 anyway.
-
At one time during this I thought that although, I went there when it was a night club and walk home some 15 miles ( alot fitter then),nr wooburn green just outside Wycombe a town I know scorcher is aware of.
-
Is it that they are both quite tall :).
If not can we have a clue, please
-
Colwyn isn't quite tall! He is thinner than you might imagine though :D
A clue?
Erm
Ok, the clue is, I have already given you the answer ;)
-
OK - it can only be that they are both in Bristol:P
-
Correct H!
-
ok try this one.Who was the pre-WW1 band leader who had three letter O's in his first and second names ? ie 3 in total. This for music lovers and any one else.
-
Scott Wood. and his Orchestra:P
-
Nope!
-
I'm afraid I couldn't name one pre-WW1 band leader, irrespective of the number of O's :-\
Should that be Os..?
-
No - O + OO He was also known for his charity work.
-
Ahhh
Is it Doctor Barnardo and his Big Band Swing Experience?
-
Slow slow quick quick slow - the dance band leader who was never without a Malborough as it was his middle name and born in 1900
-
No to the good Doctor.Clue 3 - he was often in trouble with the Old Bill.
-
On Nelson Mandela House. In real life it was Harlech Towers. Hence the connection is ... we were both named after Welsh coastal resorts.
-
Yeah that's it :D
-
Ossie Osbourne!!!!
-
somtimes well pickled but I don't think ozzie that old
-
VictOr MalbOrOugh Sylvester
-
Cigars still in the box! Clue 4: Our mystery band leader has something in common with- C de G ,D ben G and a Scouser. ps I've got my car engine running on this one!!! ( NOT a clue just might need a quick exit.....)
-

Only when you are in Turkey Colwyn Bey:D
-
Doris Cotton(billy's missiz)...crakt it...next!!!!
-
Nope!
-
right,serious......annunzio paolo mantovani....
-
Sorry Vic.
-
Would a kids favourite pudding be a clue scorcher :)
-
Don't think so.Last clue cos I'm off to my scratcher! Had our mystery man been around at the time I doubt if Cloughie would have left him on the subs bench.... Night all !
-
Dolores O'Neill
-
Robin Hood!! He ed a band.....
-
Well played, Vic- get yourself a big cigar !! Clever boy !
-
If I had a shaky fist smiley I'd put it here :D
I thought Dolores O'Neill might have been right! Not knowing much about band leaders I appreciated the football clue. Famously Brian Clough left Martin O'Neill on the bench for the European Cup final, so that was one O, all I needed to do is search google for a band leader, surname O'Neill and first name containing two further O's
:-\
-
Nice one Keith - now you know how it feels ! Bet you are frantically thinking up some sort of "revenge" puzzle !
-
I fully realise it might just be me Chinook but could you explain the following:
1. Marloborough as his middle name and born 1900
2. Our mystery band leader has something in common with- C de G ,D ben G and a Scouser
-
C de G and Robin Hood both had airports named after them
D ben G I have no idea
A scouser, robbin' hehehe
-
David ben Gurion is the name of the airport in Tel Aviv and Liverpool airport is named after John Lennon. I first learned of this "puzzle" from a Welsh guy in a pub in Cardiff - couldn't work it out even after many drinks so he eventualy had to tell me.Then I shot him...
-
Sorry Chinook do not know why I asked you earlier.
Scorcher
What about Marloborough, 1900 and Brian Clough:(
-
quote:
I fully realise it might just be me Chinook but could you explain the following:
1. Marlborough as his middle name and born 1900
Because Highlander I thought it was Victor Marlborough Sylvester who had the right number of O's and being born before WW1 could fit the description. It was before the clues.
-
Ah ha Chinook - it was me after all:(
And presumably the Brian Clough "Clue" was Nottingham Forest
-
You got it , H !
-
As soon as scorcher mentioned cloughie, the nottingham forest theme tune sprang to mind, the first two words gave me a bit of a clue!!!i was there in those halcyon days....

Got it, silly me should have remembered, used to have one, well very similar.
One of the best cars ever for driving on snow.
Won't give the answer as it will keep H thinking.
-
They all say that, Jim ! C'mon H.
-
C'mon H whats keeping you?
-
I think you are all being terribly unfair in expecting me to know who owned a fictional car in 1966 when I was only 5.
-
(http://jaysolomon.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/despair.jpg)
-
Oh go on you tell them :)
-
H, just because someone has a 1966 registered car, it doesn't follow that it must therefore be 1966.
-
OK I will - it's Del Boy's Reliant Robin.
In fact I got the right answer to the wrong question a long time ago :)
-
Very good H, well done :D
In fact, it wasn't always the number plate, but mostly it was that one :)
-
And yes I did admit to owning a Robin Reliant.
-
Technically Jim it is a Reliant Regal ;)
-
Keyboard was upsides down, I meant Reliant Robin.
