In the last couple of days, my computer has become very slow. I set a clean up about 12 hours ago & still have only 5 bars showing on the clean up. Any ideas you computer buffs out there[?]

Cancel the clean up :)

Delete your temporary files and cokkies. Run a malware program and then a virus check. Just a thought: have you recently downloaded an Anti virus program? If you have two on your system they will conflict, slow down your computer until it eventually crashes. Check through your programs. I like the previous answer, succinct and to the point?

If all the advice above fails, have a word with Lance....He can sort the cokkies out !

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions, all now seems to be well

Another issue to watch out for is having multiple virus scanners set up. This can really slow down your PC. If you buy Tune Up Utilities I have found that this really speeds up the system as it optimises your set up. It even has a 'turbo'mode that temoporarily speeds everything up and stops unneccesary apps from running.

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago. We have BT Broadband with a hub phone. I rang BT and they told me to press the bottom button at the base of the hub phone which says "Restart". This worked, althought it took 72 hours to get right up to speed again, but it's fine now.

Antivirus programs like McAfee, Norton etc slow your system down and are difficult to completely remove - get something lightweight (and more effective like Eset)
Regularly delete temporary files.
Periodically defrag your HD (do this in safe mode)
If you do these things you will have a happier system.

A couple of questions from a computer novice
what are temporary files and cookies, where do you find them and how do you delete them?
What does "defrag your HD (do this in safe mode)" mean
thanks Janet

Whilst I appreciate that Norton is heavy duty for the average home pc, I regularly send info & files to clients from mine, so feel it's worth it to ensure I don't send any nasties to their systems

it defragments your files on the hard drive & ensures that all parts of a file are together & therefore easier for your system to find. To run it, just go to your start menu / all programmes / accessories / system tool / disk defragmenter & follow the instructions

Liz101 - I didn't mean that because Eset is lightweight it's not effective. If you're happy with Norton then that's fine, but I find Eset provides a similar/better level of protection and runs faster (check out benchmark tests at cnet).
