Title: Where to find real Chedder Cheese
Post by: nichola on March 29, 2010, 09:37:16 AM
Forget processed, elastic and tasteless imitations...

Extra strong Chedder cheese available at the PatlangiƧ (Saturday) and Gunlikbasa (Sunday) markets. Right taste right texture.

You can taste test as some are strong and some milder.

These are the people that sell it.

Well its not actually cheddar cheese, its called Tulum, but it is a very good substitute. Some people find it very salty,we like it as at least it is tasty and also does not take a kilo to make a tasty cheese sauce, unlike kasar. These people are very good with their cheese stall, have been buying from them for years, very helpful and polite.

I found some in Carrefore recently (by the Otogar)- they often have samples of cheese on offer. I'm sure it was the same one - definately Izmir and it wasnt too salty. Certainly the best cheese I've had out here. Unfortuntaely I've not geen able to get any since - not by lack of trying lol I will have to check out the stall on the Sat mkt - I've bought yogart, cheese and olives off these people many times before.

Izmir Tulum.

I bought some from the daily/fish market yesterday after having some at my friends house the previous evening, it was the best I have tasted here yet, from the sea side of the fish market, in the entrance on right, his chicken cuts are cheaper too.

My Turkish friend recommends a Turkish cheese called kasar (pr)kashar.
The more yellow it is - the more it tastes like cheddar.

Just need to ask for extra strong chedder cheese - he will know exactly what you want.

Don't be shy if it is too strong or salty or too mild - just ask to try another...

tadabilirmiyim - means can I try

daha tadabilimiyim - means can I try more

Ian will know all this  ;)

When I buy he always cuts my portion from the block that I have tasted - so it should taste the same when you get it home...

I used to buy this stuff (Kasar) before I found these people. It relatively expensive and Bim where it was cheapest stopped selling it something to do with the packaging they told me!!! There it was about 7tl for about 200 maybe 250grams. In Migros expect to pay more.

This chedder cheese at the market is approx 16tl a kilo. Half the price.

The "cow" shop(sorry don't know the real name, but you can't miss it) in Tasyaka has a good selection of cheeses, not cheap but good quality.

Our little market shop on the main Calis-Gunlusbasi road called Aydi sells Izmir Tulem cheese, she is from Izmir and says it the best cheese in Turkey, its the nearest thing to English Cheddar over here.

We use Anadolu pazar in Fethiye. It is beside the Bim shop as you approach the Migros traffic lights going in to Fethiye. They have a cheese called Bergama which is great and not at all unlike English strong cheddar.
