Title: New computer = New problem.
Post by: John H on March 29, 2010, 17:06:15 PM
I have a new computer with Windows 7 and Adobe Reader 9.
Working well except that after I download PDF files I cannot open them to read/print.
When I click on 'open' I get the window 'Welcome to Windows Media Centre' offering the chance to view TV on my computer and inviting set up. I do not want this service.
This happens every time I try to open a PDF file.
It has probably been caused by me hitting the wrong key at some point when I initially set the computer up.
I cannot find any way of removing this window or getting around it.
Any advice greatly appreciated especially if it is kept simple.

It could be that you don't have it installed even though you think you do but if you are sure you do, right click on a pdf file icon that you want to open/read and select 'Open with...', locate Adobe Reader from the list that appears, also tick "always use this program to open...etc".

If Adobe reader doesn't appear in the list, you need to locate it manually in the 'open with' process so it's c: -> program files -> Adobe -> then highlight the program itself (exe file).

Keith,

I assume that you mean I may not have Adobe Reader installed.
Followed your advice and got the message 'Adobe Reader could not open attachment because it is not a supported file or because it has been damaged.'
Getting even further beyond me now.

Keith,

I will give you a bit more detail and you might be able to pick out something.
The file downloaded to the Documents Library, it's name is attachments 27_03_2010,it is a Zip file and the size 103kb. All of which is Chinese to me.

Firstly you need to unzip it, you can download a program for that. Once unzipped, your pdf will open with Adobe reader without issue. Search for winzip - that is a program that will unzip the file.

Just to close this topic I did eventually manage it without downloading anything.
I cannot explain how I did it unfortunately but whatever it was it is part of Windows 7.
Just in time to print off my tickets.
Thanks for help/interest.
