Hi
I'm a new member and coming to Turkey for the first time in June. Will be staying at Ovacik and am really interested in seeing the real turkey - not too touristy and eating real turkish food. On tight budget as have just started a business and it's going sloooowly.
Wondering if anyone knows good local cafes/restaurants/bakeries etc. Also I heard that you can take a 12 island boat trip from calis boat water taxis where the money goes to a co-op (which I like the idea of). Can you get one of these from Fethiye?
Sorry to ask loads of questions - if anyone wants to ask me anything you're welcome!
I'm a massage therapist from Marske-by-the-Sea which is on the Northeast Coast of England (cold!)
Thanks
Suzie

welcome ..... do not get starry eyed about cooperatives in Turkey... sometimes it is a euphemism for cartel, I fear.

Hi Suzie & welcome.
You can get the 12 island and all of the many other trips available from any of the tourist agents in Hisoranu of by going down to the harbour in Fethiye. Food wise Ovacik has quite a few "Turkish" restaurants and they are mainly good value. Hisaronu is "touristy" and has loads of restaurants that often cater for all tastes.
One thing for sure is you will enjoy it.

Calis Boat is a cooperative where the money raised goes to the workers and up keep of the boats and much loved water taxis.

You can take day boat trips to local 'islands' and more from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz both palces a short Dolmus (small bus) ride away.
Loads of small cafes selling Turkish sweets/desserts
You can get a water taxi to/from Calis/Fethiye
There is plenty to do and lots of trips to places a bit off the beaten track...
Enjoy

Hi Suzie, welcome to the forum
I'm sure you'll enjoy your holiday, but you may have to travel outside of Ovacik if you want to experience the real Turkey.

There is a good bakery on the Ovacik hill on the left as you go towards Hisaronu from Fethiye. The round bread with a hole in the middle like a doughnut shape is popular with the Turkish children who are my neighbours and costs about 50 kurus. There are a large variety of breads to choose from. There are small supermarkets, Sok and Bim in that area on the main road. They stock most basics.Sut(milk)Peynir(cheese)Su(water) and things like that. The market is on a Monday at the bottom of Ovacik hill.T If you are going into Fethiye and want Turkish food there are a lot of small cafes around the cinema area which do Turkish food as well as some lovely places like the Mozaice Bahce and the Paspatur (old town)area.Menemen is a scrambled egg meal with peppers in. Mercimek is lentil soup.Iskender Kebab is a lamb kebab on a plate with spicy butter sauce and yoghurt. :)There are plenty of places to eat in Ovacik and Hisaronu.

Hi, you will get lots of tips from people on the Forum and Nichola has given you a great link already. Also use the search facility, just ask anything you want.
Be brave, venture out, ask locally and recognise that tourism plays a great part in the local economy so expect lots of things that go with that but you will easily search out the real Turkey if you look. 8)
