Title: Luggage excess cost
Post by: sashbash on April 11, 2010, 13:33:13 PM
Hi, have just flown back to Turkey with Flythomascook and just want to warn people that they now charge £12 per kilo excess luggage. Apparently it went up a month ago. I pointed out that I had phoned them the previous day and had been told it was £10 per kilo but nobody was interested.

Yes you were robbed - their website still says £10 for short haul plus (Turkey)and £12 for long haul.
I dont know how much you were over but I would try and get it back.

Kevin B is correct, if you pre book excess luggage its cheaper but you have to book it 4 days before you fly. I didn't know I was over till the day before flying, which is when I phoned them to see if I could pre book. I was told my booking was closed, had been closed for 4 days and that I had to pay the excess at the airport. I pointed out I didn't know I was over my limit till I had packed and that i didnt ever pack 4 days before I had too!! Was told its £10 per kilos, I said that was very high, that other airlines charged £7 or £8, I was told "oh you may pay that at the airport, £10 is only an estimate!!!" Then charged the £12

Lynne, this happened to me in June last year web page posted 8 pound charged 10 at airport, i was told at the airport if you do not like it do not fly :o after phone calls, emails, and the ombudsman involed, they have totally ignored me, everyone i have spoken to just passed me from pillar to post, total waste of time, my solution, i will not fly with them again.[:(!] good luck to you if you try to get a refund, but my advice (their customer services are non existent) would be do not waste your time and money. ;)

I am not sure yet when we will be returning to the UK or with which flight company, I sent an email requesting costings of excess baggage this is the reply I got back from Fly Thomas Cook, not fully answered but I didn't expect more.

Loz, I have contacted TC on the phone, eventually, I was told as per your email that to pre book its £35 for 5 kgs each way etc & £10 at the airport per kilo if not pre booked. To pre book you have to go on to the following site http://www.thomascookairlines.co.uk/prebookexcessbaggage.asp
You can select excess for either outward or inward flight only.

Thomson are cheaper on pre booked excess baggage than Thomas Cook I think too - £17.50 for 5 kilos one way - I've often had a second case and 20 kgs for under £80 well worth it  :-)
