Stuck on rig in middle of north sea east of shetland, all flights on hold, being looked at 1200 hrs, not holding out too much hope, ash cloud drifting south, by all accounts ash shot approx 5 miles in the air.

Basically all UK airspace blocked now unless in emergency situation. It will depend on how fast the ash moves as to when they re-open. I think they are going to look again at 6pm tonight.

Friend at Manchester Airport has been told no chance of flying out until at least tomorrow. With light northerly winds forecast for Friday it doesn't look hopeful until Saturday when slightly fresher westerlies should come in for a time to hopefully blow the dust towards Europe;though with a fairly static high in the Atlantic to the west of Ireland its unlikely that there will be much change in wind speeds until next week.:(

Oh and before anyone blames all these volcanoes and earthquakes on the sun as I have seen on other places on the web remember the sun was 93 million miles away at the time of the earthquakes & volcano eruption...it's got an airtight alibi. The moon? Not so much :-)

Gutted!!! Some of my family who live in Australia, and who are in the UK at the moment were supposed to be coming out on Sunday. Have not seen them for over 5 years. They should be coming with my Nan, who I have not seen for 2 years. Got everything crossed at the moment, really, really hope they can get here.

Also quite a lot of folk stuck here, who really need to get back to the UK in time for work on Monday.

The issue isn't just when the UK airspace re-opens now as so much of the rest of Europe have closed their airspace as well. If the flight is due to fly this path then it still won't be able to leave. The only flights leaving Glasgow are to Ireland, other Scottish airports or transatlantic. Amazed that flights are arriving and taking off from Iceland though!!

I've just had a text from our neighbour who's on holiday in Calis at the moment.  They're having a fab time!  He says the weather's great and he's happily supping an Efes!  He's not a bit bothered about being "stuck" there - in fact he sounds more than happy to have a few more days!   :)

I know it's a different story if you need to get back for work.  :(

I'd be absolutely gutted if I'd been due to fly out for a holiday and my flight had been cancelled.  How do people stand with cancelled flights?  Are they covered by holiday insurance?

Not sure Julesbob, I'm sure I read somewhere a while ago that if it is a 'natural cause?'you can't claim? I may be wrong.ay
My daughter was flying with Ryanair. They told her she can rebook a flight within 30 days or they can have a refund?

Heard that it may be classified as "an act of God" and some Insurance COmpanies won't pay out.

Even if it's part of your policy, I think that's appalling:(.

What is the point of taking out insurance if not to protect yourself against things that are totally outwith your control:(.

Title: UK Flights cancelled
Post by: julesbob0303 on April 16, 2010, 21:52:29 PM
I agree with you H.  It's just not fair.  I know "natural causes" obviously happen without any prior warning, but this really is a first, and, as ALL air travel has been cancelled, surely the insurance companies should HAVE to pay out?   8)

I feel so sorry for all the people affected by this.  The news earlier showed a family trying to fly out to a family wedding (can't remember where).  Lots of people will also be wanting to fly home as it's now the end of the English school holiday period.

We know someone who works at Dalaman airport and it looks likely that flights will be going later today. Insurance comapnies are telling customers that they cannot claim on insurance as Highlander and others have said. My sister in law is at our place in Fethiye at the moment and we had to extend their policies last night.

However she did say that the volcanic ash cloud is travelling towards Turkey and there may be problems later with Turkish airports closing.  Fingers crossed that doesn't happen.

I hear Thomas Cook has cancelled all holidays and will give a full refund and you need to book another holiday at another time. I guess by the time this is over if it ever is they just wouldn't be able to cope with re jigging everyone.

Very very bad news for everyone... this could go on indefinitely... it lasted 2 years last time this volcano erupted 200 years ago

Updated  10.00 Uk Local time 17 April 2010

Like all UK travel companies, Thomas Cook UK & Ireland has faced unprecedented disruption to its flight and holiday programme as a result of the volcanic ash from Iceland that continues to affect the airspace above northern Europe.

As a result, we have now taken the difficult decision to cancel all Thomas Cook Airlines flights that were unable to depart on Thursday 15th April, yesterday (Friday 16th April) and all outbound flights today (Saturday 17th April). We are contacting all customers affected by this to do our up most to rearrange their holiday to allow them to depart in the next few days.

For holidaymakers due to travel tomorrow (Sunday 18th April), they should not travel to their UK departure airports at this present time.  We continue to monitor the situation and we will update our website with new information.

Please Note

[snip]

- Customers whose flights have been cancelled by the airline and wish to amend their flight / holiday may do so but must re-book to travel on a departure date within the next 30 days (18th May 2010)
- In the event of a customer amending their holiday (as above), any additional costs will be the responsibility of the customer
- If the airline has confirmed that the flight is still operating (although with possible delays) then normal cancellation and amendment booking conditions will apply
- For customers due to depart after 18 April, normal booking conditions will apply.

UK airports closed until 1am tomorrow. As European airspace is also closed all flights that fly over europe will not be flying for at least another day or so. Flight companies are also prioritising - those booked on a flight from Dalaman to UK will get priority over those whose flight was cancelled. Best to just try and chill and enjoy the sun for a few more days.

Thousands at Dalaman?/ Just imagine what they would be making on drinks at the airport!!! Dont think this is entirely true. People have either been allocated hotels, have found their own to wait it out, or as other people have said, have returned to their own houses in the surrounding areas.
I work for a tour operator, we have clients in a few areas of Turkey and also in Northern Cyprus. We do not have our own airlines, but use Turkish Airlines, Cyprus Turkish, Thomas Cook at this time of year. Turkish airlines have been great, even finding accommodation for our clients in Istanbul when we know Istanbul is very full. Other airlines have done as much as they can under the circumstances. We are paying for our package holiday clients to stay in hotels, and are assisting our flight only customers as much as we can.  I am sure that Thomas Cook are also helping clients.EU law states that flights between Eu countries or those originating from Eu countries etc etc, so Northern Cyprus is a bit of a grey area. We are, though, paying for hotel accommodation for our clients in N Cyprus as we feel these are extraordinary circumstances and would wish to keep our good name.
We understand this is not the case with other operators.
This volcano is just one of the forces that nature can throw at us, but I think we should be grateful it is not an earthquake or something that takes lots of lives.
It will take a while to return to normal operation after the no fly ban has been lifted, so we will all have to be patient!

The report went on the interview various chavs, disgusted that their flight to Gatwick had been diverted and they now had to suffer a free coach trip south.

We're due to fly out to Dalaman next Saturday, but our real worry is that our daughter is due to fly home to UK from Canada this coming Tuesday.  She's been working out there as a snowboard instructor over the winter, and then she is due to come out to Ovacik with us. I'm not even thinking about our flights to Turkey - as a mother my only concern now is about my daughter flying home from Canada.  I have mixed feelings.  On the one hand I would be delighted if the airspace was cleared quickly, but on the other hand I want them to make sure there is absolutely no doubt at all that it is 100% safe to fly.  I would obviously be sad if we don't get out to Ovacik next Saturday, but can't think beyond my daughter getting home safely at the moment.

Anyone on holiday here who cannot get back to the UK should get receipts for food and hotel room costs. Under UK consumer law the holidaymaker would be entitled to claim that money from the holiday company.

50% of flights in Europe tomorrow

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Breaking News from a press conference by Eurocontrol. They are hoping 50% of flights in europe will be able to operate tomorrow. Some good news at last!

Taking a few moments ago from pilot's network site Pprune.org

I have been a member of this site for sometime now and have been following this site which has first hand info from pilots, controllers etc all over the world.
Let's hope this is the beginning of the end of the chaos.

KLM are allegedly resuming feight flights this evening

Should read 50% of airspace not flights. Info has been corrected on "Pprune" site

Don't know if this is of any interest to people who have to/want to re-book.

Mon 03 May - Sat 15 May Glasgow - Dalaman = £ 375.96 (before baggage, meals etc). Price is for 2 (that's only slightly more than I paid for 1)

That's a very resonable price from Scotland (if you can get here).

Don't think that follows. This would seem to be an economic expediency balanced against the Tour Companies incurring uncertain additional accommodation costs whilst the stranded pasengers wait for spare seats on planes once they start flying again or the Tour Companies organise special flights.

Airspace in Scotland is to open from 0700 tomorrow as dust from the Icelandic volcano ceases to affect UK airspace.
Sky sources understand airspace in the Midlands will then reopen at 1200 and southern UK at 1800.
It's understood that UK airports will then be allowed to conduct operations 24 hours a day until the flight situation returns to normal.
Hope its true for all the stranded people!!

Manchester Airport official says:

Manchester Airport will be open from 09:00, tomorrow, Tuesday 20 April, unless there is a deterioration in conditions.

"After five days without flights, tens of thousands of passengers waiting to be repatriated, significant disruption is likely before normal operations are resumed."

How will they be allocating outbound flights tomorrow on that basis?

Thomas Cook has sent an email this morning saying that full refunds will be given as the flights have been canceled. Yesterday TC confirmed my flight had been canceled and I have made other arrangements

Later I received an amendment saying that as I am in the resort that the flight is not canceled and efforts will be made to get me home. I am at home and I am visiting the UK. Tried to contact TC what a waste of time. They seem to play this card of we are TC hoolidays and it has nothing to do with us you need to contact Flythomascook. I was given an 0871 number in the UK that I tried to dial without getting to speak to anyone. I spent an hour trying to get through without being answered. The charge from the UK is 10p per minute so what it is from Turkey is anyone's guess.

In the terms and conditions it says that if I cancel then I am not entitled to a refund. So if TC say we will fly you back in 2 weeks time does that mean I am not entitled to a refund.

Gerry, they fltc assumed you are a tourist hence the resort quote on their site, but what i find a bit unusual if you are UK based and had a flight canceled that is the end of their contract with you as a customer, but they have now canceled the resort flights for the 16/ to 20/ April with a refund, but not the 30 day same route same price option, which i am told is in contravention of regulation EU 216/2004 i have emailed them but so far no reply.

I have also been at the end of the phone to Fly TC on a no. of occasions for over an hour at the cost of 10p p min! To then get dumped by them and on their website it says to fill in a call back request form. The reality of this is that you get an automated response saying they've been experiencing a large no. of calls - you're telling me!

Anyhow I managed to get through on a number in uk which gave me the TC resort office number - not sure whether they were helpful....should explain I am in uk and hubbie and 2 children 'stranded in hot, sunny blue sky'd turkey' anyhow the no. was 0090 252 612 5753/4 (for southern turkey - t'other half in calis). I have also checked dalaman departures and 2 flights appear to have taken off (late) one to newcastle and the other to 'london' - can only assume this is right as it was dalaman airport's website.

Good News:
All British airports can re-open from 10pm tonight after no-fly zones, put in place because of the volcanic ash cloud, were lifted.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said there will be a phased reintroduction of UK airspace.

Experts have now divided the cloud between areas that have a high ash density which are "unsafe for flights", and ones where planes can fly safely.

The CAA said: "The major barrier to resuming flight has been understanding tolerance levels of aircraft to ash.

"Manufacturers have now agreed increased tolerance levels in low ash density areas."

The CAA said it was a "situation without precedent" and that decisions had been made based on "thorough gathering of data and analysis".

Onwards and Upwards.... Hope to be with you all on Sunday[Fingers crossed icon]

Flew back to Gatwick last night from Dalaman. We were originally due to be routed to Newcastle as that was the only airport open in the UK at that time. Diverted to Gatwick, our original destination while we were in the air. Should have flown back on Thurs 15 April with Thomas Cook, but flight was delayed for six days. As we were seat only passengers, stayed at Dalaman airport for 13 hours. Thomas Cook then came back and picked up three coach loads of passengers, and took us to the Dalamn Hilton, where we stayed all inclusive for six days. How's that for customer service? Well done Thomas Cook, it could have been a lot worse for us.

TC are not working to a normal service in the resorts. If you have a flight to the UK there is no guarantee that you will get on the flight as they are returning those who have been here longest and those with priority first. So check with TC before you head off to Dalaman or Antalya. I was due out on a flight from Antalya tomorrow and I have been told that I will not get on it even though I have a confirmed booking.

The UK government is trying to get the EU to compensate the airlines. They should not be given a penny as they are now exploiting the situation by quadrupling the cost of flights over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

I have just checked Thomas Cook flights only Dalaman to London Gatwick.

They say they are not taking bookings for flights prior to 28th April if you do a search but then shows flights available from the 26th April

Outbound prices from Dalaman 26th April to 5th May in Euros 45 - 65 - 59 & 94

Return prices 7th to 12th May from Gatwick in Euros 121 - 131 - 141

I am quite impressed. These seem reasonable to me considering their recent losses.

Made it!!!!  we finally arrived back in Calis late last night after waiting 6 days in the UK.  Our first flight with Pegasus to Istanbul then connecting internal flight to Dalaman last Thursday was cancelled along with everyone elses.  They rebooked us on the same flights for Wednesday 21st (yesterday) no extra to pay (flights cost £75 each)  and we were lucky enough to be the first plane to Turkey out of Stansted.  They even gave us exit seats with extra legroom free of charge.  We can't fault Pegasus at all even though it did take a long time to get through to their customer care centre but I guess under the circumstances that was to be expected.

Stansted was like a ghost town yesterdy morning but everyone there was in great spirits as things were finally moving.

This is an E mail that I have received from my Travel Insurers. Looks like sense prevails, well at least with Direct Travel Insurance.

quote:

We are pleased to confirm that Direct Travel Insurance will pay valid claims from customers that are either stranded abroad or cannot travel due to the volcanic ash.

Many travel insurance policies do not cover such situations but, in light of these extraordinary circumstances, we are treating this as an adverse weather event. This means that you can submit a claim for Delayed departure, Abandonment or Missed departure if you have been affected.

What should I do if my travel plans have been affected?

If your flight has been cancelled or delayed, whether you are in the UK or abroad, in the first instance please contact your airline and/or travel company.

You can submit a claim under your Direct Travel Insurance policy for costs such as accommodation and transport that cannot be recovered from another source such as the airlines, tour operators, hotels etc

Please note that the policy limits and conditions specified in your policy document will apply, and will depend on the level of cover you purchased.

If you are stranded abroad due to travel disruption, Direct Travel Insurance will automatically extend your policy period until you return home, at no extra cost, for single trip policyholders.

If you need to submit a claim, please ensure that you follow the standard claims procedure and provide all relevant supporting documentation. The following links should help:
