I'm usually a calm person but this morning I have lost it completely........ My partner is a decorator/builder - he had a call last night from someone who hangs around in bars in Calis chatting up tourists and home owners. The guy told him he had an english couple who needed some work done at their house and asked him to call and have a look at the job this morning. He always needs work so turned up to look at the job this morning - the english couple didn't want a price from him they wanted to deal with the guy they met in the bar - I know that their new friend will add probably something in the region of 100% mark up on the price my partner has quoted him and pocket the difference. My partner is really unhappy about it but says he can't afford to turn the work away. Grrrrr - so home owners - if you want work done....... find a reputable trades person - please don't ask people hanging around tourists in bars or working in them they may say they are your friends and they maybe but that won't stop them trying to earn some extra money at your expense. There are lots of recommendations on this site under Local Tradespeople and Good Shop/Bad Shop.
I'm not allowed to name the person who called last night - apparently it's not the done thing in Calis. If anyone wants a quote for work - please feel free to contact me via this site. I just hope the people who he saw this morning read this post.
I am like the mad woman of Calis this morning - am so fed up with people viewing people who have invested their hard earned cash in this area as bottomless money pits!

Why are you angry? Your partner gets the work and the people pay double. They know best, let them pay! One thing I learned very early on when living over there is that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't stop it strapping a huge rock to itself and jumping in, never to be seen again.
And I bet I could name the 'middle man' in one too :-\

I know they chose the "ask a bloke who calls me mate in a bar" method to find a decorator - but it still makes me mad - the people who he has done work for are always surprised by the quality of his work and how cheap he is - I don't like the idea that these people will get the job done and be able to say they used him but had to use a middle man to get the best price! If people get to pay a reasonable price to have works done in their holiday or all year round homes they would have more money to spend on meals/drink out - other businesses could benefit from them been here too not just one person who will get the same money as the decorator without doing any of the work!
-
I hope its not a scam to get the work done for nothing!

I agree Tinx. Will the middle man get paid and then not pass on the fee?
-
I'm already a woman on the edge....... hadn't even considered that - the middleman is known to us...... but yes you are right he would probably be even happier with 100% of the money - customers would have the job done and only one person would be out of pocket. He probably has slime running through his veins - reptile of a man!

Sometimes, people ask my husband if he knows any tradesmen as my hubby is Turkish and we work within the property sector. If he refers someone on, it is not something he earns a commission on, he just does it as a favour, nothing else. However, the people he helps, usually do know him.
Much of the time though, it is as kizkucuk says, but, not always.
-
Why can't we know who he is. There is a photo of the number 1 slimeball on a banner on the front of the forum. Maybe we can stop someone else getting ripped off.
-
He hasn't ripped anyone off yet, has he?
-
kizkucuk, whilst I would agree with you, in principle, the couple wanting the work done must be naive/rather dim not to realize the middle man is going to want his cut. If they pay more than necessary that's their problem. So long as your husband gets his money. Why not do some leaflets with 'no obligation quote'? and hand them out, especially in their area
-
Thanks for the suggestion peecee - I spent yesterday afternoon doing just that - just need to get them printed and will put them through the doors. I honestly think some people believe what they want to - and if some bloke in a bar claims to be your best mate and says he can help you get better deals on work, furniture etc..... they read all the warnings but convince themselves that their mate is different - especially as he has probably used the lines like - you'll meet some really bad people in Calis who want to rip you off etc........
-
They'll lose a few hundred quid. Nothing really compared to the couple I met who wouldn't view any properties without their "special friend" coming along to advise them. They trusted him completely, and he sorted out a purchase without any agent or lawyer. They trusted him enough to pay £18,000 more than it was displayed for a property than it was in just about every estate agency window in the region.
Like I said, you have to let the gullible ones go. Even if you went to them and told them face to face, they probably wouldn't believe you and would hate you forever. I used to feel some sort of sorrow for them but sorry, it makes me p*** myself laughing these days. Especially when they email me for advice because it's all gone wrong.

i hope you was ok with me mr scunner...lol
-
I think you know John ;)
-
£18K more - people are crazy - bet he's driving a nice car now :-) Meanwhile the work has been done and will be finished today - we'll see when and whether Mr Man in the Middle pays up.................
-
Blooming hell, I am in the wrong job! Think will take up drink and earn my living roaming in bars
-
Well it is well paid! - he has been paid but 100 tl less than he quoted for the job - so middle man has 100 tl to spend in Calis Bars this week :-(
-
Reason given for the deduction?
-
That'll be carpet tax
-
That's all the english people would pay!

Am I close? :D

I admit that it is BC style however in this case it's a greedy Turk :-)
-
Forewarned is forearmed - who is BC?
-
No need for such information - all people who slither up to strangers in bars offering to get the "Turkish price" or similar for property, getting work done etc. should be told to sod off. Come to CBF and ask for dozens of independent recommendations, from people who won't be taking a cut.
