Title: Oykun Hotel
Post by: Joeblunt on June 10, 2010, 16:55:24 PM
Just booked this with Thomson's for 11 nights in July, chosen purely due to my research on t'Internet, all we need is a good clean bed, a decent breakfast and somewhere pretty central i.e. close enough to get everywhere but not a room above a rowdy bar on 'the strip':D
We thought we'd book through a Tour Operator this time, if we like the place / hotel we'll book direct in future and make it into a second home for shorter breaks. We tend to go on a Cruise over Christmas and the new year but need a 7/11 night cheapie during April - September as a gettaway :).We always tend to buy a bit of jewellery when we're in Turkey and have quite a good relationship with a jeweller in Oludeniz so this part of Turkey isn't entirely unfamiliar to us.
Someone please tell me we've made the right decision?  8)

Probably the fullest hotel there  8)

Every year they seem to be fully booked, unlike so many others. Must mean they are doing it right  :)

Absolutely the right decision!  We've been to the Oykun 4 times now, the last one in May this year and it just gets better.

We've always booked through Thomson because we've always got the best deals that way and never had any problems at all.

The hotel is so handy for everything. A few minutes walk from numerous bars, restaurants and shops and also the dolmus or water taxi for getting about.

The rooms are spotlessly clean. Cleaned everyday with towels and bedding changed alternate days.

But it's the family and staff at the hotel which makes this one that people return to year after year.  They'll make you feel really welcome. But watch out for Freddie and Velli behind the bar!   ;)

We're already looking for our next trip back.

Have a fantastic time.

After an awful experience on my last visit to Turkey (Bodrum- yuk!!) been 11 years since plucked up courage to return. So pleased at the good reviews that Oykun is getting coz I'm there in July-August.

Don't think you'll regret your decision to give Turkey another go Swinton.  Our first visit to Turkey was 9 years ago to Bitez and we fell in love with the place.  Been back every year since, but Calis is the one we keep returning to, like so many other people on here we've become addicted!!

Hope you have a great time.   :)

Just back from  17 days chill out in Calis and met many CBF Members  staying @ Oykun Hotel.
Our 8 th time  here, we booked Flights ourselves [KTHY],  and the Hotel  & hotel transfers direct with the hotel.
Total cost for both of us on B/B was £546 a real bargain in this fully booked hotel,  with many clients we have met in June over the years again back there which speaks for itself. great owners / staff and so so clean as always

Oykun the owners son is very upset that Thompsons know how popular the hotel is year after year that they have put a massive increase on 2011 prices , So next year, Greedy rip off  Thompsons   will not have so many blocked booked rooms and more will be given to  the Co OP Travel and Jewel in the Crown  holiday companys[  who are there this year ], say only a minor increase of  prices next year   And,, Monarch Holidays who will also have allocated rooms  for the First time next year.

How ever Oykun Hotel Direct  Prices will Not be increased for next year im assured so  Direct book early for next year [ no money to pay till your @ the hotel next year] look out, and book  for early bird discounted flights , count the weeks untill your Calis chill out

Ron, thanks for that.  Really helpful information.

Have just said on another topic that Thomson prices are much higher than we paid this year (I guessed this was down to them trying to recoup some of the money they lost during the ash cloud fiasco earlier in the year) and I would be looking around for either another hotel or another way of staying at the Oykun.

Price increases I expect and accept if they are within reason, but to holiday the same two weeks in May as this year would be about £250 more, an increase of about 40%!!

Looks like you got a really good deal there, will be checking out flights to see what I can find.

Have just booked in at Oykun. Excellent hotel--very high standard of accomodation. Breakfast caters for all tastes with your chosen omelettes and pancakes prepared as you wait. Three minute walk takes you down to the beach-front.
Wifi available in Oykun and staff are extremely helpful---nothing is ever too much trouble.
On arriving at Dalaman your transfer-driver is now waiting down the ramp at the outside cafe area. Usually your driver was allowed to meet you at the exit doors.
Very strict with baggage at Glasgow Airport. £12 per kilo over allowance and only one single bag under 5 kilo in cabin. Gone are 2 litre bottle of spirits allowance.
Duty Free at Dalaman is located in area where you baggage arrives. It is cheaper than Glasgow Duty Free or limited stock available on plane and you don't have the inconvenience of stowing your DF in overhead locker.
My favourite tipple is Metaxa 7 star and is not available in Glasgow. The Duty Free at Dalaman was deserted and it is worth a look round before you negotiate the perils of the baggage carousel.
Hope info is helpful
Cheers----Brian   :)

Is anyone staying at this hotel now? I've been trying to contact them via email to check availability for next week (I already have one room booked but now my son & his girlfriend want to come) Plan 'B' - can anyone recommend another hotel as near as possible to the Oykun (B & B) who may have a room?

No problem, good luck with finding somewhere.

Don't think your son and his girlfriend will be disappointed with the Golden Moon if they end up there.  It's literally no more than two minutes from the Oykun across one of the side roads (not main road).

Golden Moon should be fine. Although we now stay at the Oykun we've been to the GM many times. Mete and the staff will look after you well, but we don't understand why it is usually more expensive than the Oykun. It's a smaller hotel so maybe there aren't the economies of scale. You're lucky that Mete doesn't have a gold shop any more(he turned it into an estate agents). When he had the gold shop he used to cost us poor english hubbies a fortune!

I know what you mean, we've been going to Turkey for years and always buy something gold. Previous years I've bought my wife diamond rings now the bloke who we originally bought from is happy to pick us up from the airport and even takes us out for a meal, everytime we go to Turkey we take gifts for his children now. 8)

Actually we always book our next holiday within a month of returning from a holiday, I suppose that way we've always got something to look forward to. We tend to have our main holiday over Christmas & the New Year (Cruise) but try and get a Cheapish holiday between April and September. We normally go to Turkey end or April / early May or Late August / Early September but we have a son doing GCSE's and a daughter doing 'A' levels so we're going July this year.

Yes, we usually like to have something to look forward to, make's it that bit easier to get up and go to work on morning!  ;)

We've been to Calis middle of May last few years and really like it then.  Have a couple more holiday lined up for this year but already on the lookout for flights for Turkey next year!  Mind you that's if we can afford it after daughter's wedding in  October!   :o

Actually that's a lie - we'll make sure we can afford it!

Hi Joe
Diaappointed they're offering this as an attraction. I asked the students who were setting up the Turtle Watch Station on Calis Beach if a petition was on offer to prevent this inhumane exploitation of this creature and they indicated it would.
I am also staying at the Oykun.
I hope it wasn't the UK-based tour operators who were offering swimming with the Dolphins in a pool in Hisaronu. Let me know if this is the case.
Returning from a trip on Jerry's Boat on Monday two dolphins made a brief but unforgettable leap beside the boat.

block 1 is the oldest one most rooms have a bath with showers over the bath lower rooms face the fruit trees & gardens with little sun, high floors are sunny all have concrete balconys .

block 2 is the newer one rooms have showers no baths with french type iron balconys best ones face either of the pools

Jenny, we were in Block A (or 1 probably) this year and loved it. Bit better for us than the other block which can be a bit noisy. Though I have to say it's never spoiled our holidays when we've been there.

It was very quiet in the older block and the bathrooms a bit bigger.  We were on the gound floor and got some sun in the afternoon.  That could be an advantage if you are going when it's likely to be very hot.

The staff at the Oykun are lovely and very helpful if you request anything.

We done the 12 islands boat trip with Carole & tayfun - Great day out. We had the Turkish bath at the Oykun on our first day, I'd say the Turkish bath is probably the same wherever you go, we just like the convenience of a one min walk from our room. Theres a mini market (a bit like Arkwrights) just outside the Oykun very reasonably priced and sell everything!

There us also a larger supermarket approx 5 mins away, Gempa i think? If you stand with your back to Oykun, look right , you will see a mini roundabout, go straight across and supermarket on your left, aquapark on your right

Hi
Not been around for a while as we went to Goldcity in Mahmutlar last summer for a change (very nice). We are wanting to come back to Calis this summer though but fancy a change from the Mutlu. We usually book direct and find our own flights. I cannot seem to access rates at the Oykun on their website, maybe because they are closed at the moment? - does anyone know roughly what they will be charging this summer? I think we will need to book sooner rather than later as it seems to be really popular.
Cheers for any advice

Rates are around £18 per room per night in may / june ----- £ 30 in peak times on B/B ,

just email oykun via his web site with your dates and he will reply within a day or so with the room rates

Thanks guys, really appreciate your feedback. We have been to the Mutlu several times and always really enjoyed it but decided this year we ought to try something different and see the place from a different angle. We've probably done most of the 'trips' eg Saklikent, Olu Deniz, Jeep Safari, Quad-Biking,5/12 island boat trip,Fethiye, Pammukale, Dalyan etc so if anyone has suggestions for any others I would love to hear them.

Fiona, we've been staying at the Oykun for the last few years and certainly recommend it, it's a lovely hotel and the staff are wonderful.  However, we've also decided to have a change this year and are looking at renting an apartment for a bit more independance.  You'll have a great time I'm sure.

As for trips, we like the Gocek market boat trip.  A couple of hours sailing across to Gocek, an hour or two looking round Gocek (you don't have to go to the market) then a leisurely trip back when they usually stop off for a swim.  We've booked it down at the water taxis.

For something a bit futher afield have you tried Patara?  We did this a couple of years ago.  It's a totally different way of life there.  We got the bus from the main Otogar in Fethiye to Patara.  That one drops you off on the main road and a smaller dolmus then takes you down to Patara village or on to the beach.  We stayed for two nights at the Patara Golden Pension which is right in the middle of the village and a basic but very clean and comfortable hostel. They have a sister hotel also in Patara, the Patara Golden Lighthouse which is bigger and has a pool.  They both have websites for you to check them out.  But the beach is the main draw in Patara, it's amazing!  Worth the trip if you've not been before.

Thanks for your suggestions. We did stop off at Patara beach a couple of years ago at the end of a jeep safari but had rather a bad experience in the sea there, both me and my daughter were caught in strong currents really close to the shore and had to be pulled out - quite scary! The barbecue sounds good and we haven't actually been to Gocek market so that would be new to us too.

Make sure you get the right Yaka Park as there are a couple of fakes that have set up nearby. It's a lovely cool oasis in the Mountains where you can see the trout farm and then enjoy a really fresh barbeque of trout and salad whilst sitting in amongst the trees and waterfalls.  Go to http://www.tlosyakapark.com/  ;)

Thanks CB - so for a couple for two weeks in July the total cost is roughly

2 x £ 14 per person per night = £ 28.00 per night

£ 28 per night x 14 nights = £ 392.00

ADD Transfer both ways     = £  60.00

TOTAL                      = £ 452.00 including air conditioning

cheers - believe it or not that was one of my more serious posts.

It's a bit like flights - they are quoted as £ 150.00 on page 1 and end up as £ 225.75 by the time you add this and that.

I just wanted to make sure that someone reading the figures didn't get the idea that the all-in cost was £ 392.00 and that it inclusded air conditioning.

We booked a hotel last year at an attractive price (strangely) only to find out that air con was £ x per night extra.

I opened a window ;)

PS I replied before I read DianeT's post which illustrates the point.

I'm fairly sure this should have been posted in the Grumpy Old Men Section but here goes anyway:

Thomson Package for Fifi's Dates from Gatwick = £ 600.00 per person (Well one to Fifi and DianeT)

Thomson Package for Fifi's Dates from Glasgow = £ 732.00 per person.

Price of 4 flights from Glasgow on Fifi's dates = £ 1,403.92 !!!

That's basic cost - no excess baggage allowance, meals etc.
