I had thought about posting this sometime ago but the "freeloader" thread brought it back to mind. It maybe should be under the Grumpy Old Men Section.
It's just that, even if I had loads of money, I simply wouldn't pay the price of some so called luxury goods. For example, I wouldn't pay £750 a night for a hotel room. I'm only using it to lay my head on a pillow after all.
And I certainly wouldn't pay four and a half grand for a watch which happened to be sponsored by Tiger Woods. Just how much did that sponsorship add to the cost.
I will ignore all stereotypical posts about tight Scotsman but would be interested in your views.

Grumpy old tight scots man ;):D

John wants you to know that he has ignored that as promised ;)

I'm with John, don't mind paying a higher price for something that will last, or I may pay a bit more for a beer or a meal if the place has a view or something else that makes it better than average.
Yes I am a canny Scot but not tight (and I'm on my third Skoda)

Yes Jim, but don't forget that expensive number plate you bought for it:P

£120 for a bottle of Crystal Champs!! What's all that about? Seems the supermarket own brands top the polls time and again. Even if I earned what the soccer stars earn I wouldn't pay that for a few bubbles in my wine!
-
Or £10,000 for a carpet.....for goodness sakes you only walk on the bl**dy thing!
-
The earth will never move if you only walk on it:D
-
Exactly Stoop - I couldn't believe that they wanted £ 6k for a bottle of Whisky in Duty Free at Glasgow Airport.:(

I am exactly the same as H. My friend has a designer watch (GucciI think), costing just over £1000, and I just don't get it. It tells the same time as my chunky funky 25 quid one from Argos! Mine's looks better, doesn't matter if I lose it and nobody's gonna mug me for it!
Same as bags. We women can be mugs at times. I have found a great source for copy bags (knock offs as they call them in the U.S of A). I like Marc Jacobs bags but refuse to pay the Harvey Nics price. When people ask me if its a genuine one, I tell them if they can't tell, then they don't need to know!
Now Champers is another story. I know lots of Cahmpagne can be really expensive, but IMHO, the more expensive it is, it tends to be drier, thus making it less palatable for my taste. So £28 is my max for bubbles!
P.S I am Scottish too, but by no means miserable. I just like value for my hard earned money.
:D

Got to admit Toky, my weakness is for bags and shoes but, I always look for bargains in sales particularly on the net. I never pay the full price. I know all the best websites now. I have also bought them in N.W. Outlet Village. Sometimes a real designer bag is cheaper than a fake, particularly at Maya in Paspatur who wanted £400.00 for a fake. Seems that fakes in Turkey are over cutting the real thing:D

I have a weakness for watches and always wanted a TAG. Well I paid around 1000 USD for the automatic I have now - in 1998. 12 years old, worn everyday, and not a scratch on it. It's never off my wrist and to me was worth the money. At £50 a time I'd have probably gone through £600 anyway in 12 years and still not had such a classic watch on my wrist.

I remember going on a jeep safari many years ago ,being herded into the carpet factory, shown various carpets ranging from £100 to £20000,then asked at the end what carpet did i like ,I told them the one in my living room
-
Like all of you I love a bargain. I always buy decent shoes as I have had too many sore feet with the cheapies.
I was looking for shoes for work and as we have to have toes covered I as you can imagine am struggling to get summery shoes with toes. I am normally in sandals by now:-\
I overheard someone in Asda's talking about a pair of shoes being comfy and they had toes so I bought two different pairs.
Big mistake!!!!
Feet are suffering and can't wait till I am off next week to start looking for a decent pair of shoes and stuff the cost.

Our first trip to Turkey we wanted a carpet for our dog sitter. We were herded in the usual way and made to feel very important when we enquired about costs.
£75.00 for a Kilm.
Turkish friend took hubby for a leather jacket and he got it for a good price. Leather guy sent us to his carpet selling brother and we got same Kilm for £25.00.
We must be freeloaders:D

Stoop, that's part of my point. Your "classic" watch tells the same time as my fashion watch so what's the point? Help me out please! LOL
:D

New watch each year for 12 years @£50 = £600. That's more than I paid 12 years ago and it's still worth at least £400 second hand. Plus I can wear it just about anywhere - wet dry or sticky:D
-
A friend of ours bought a 'Rolex' in the Calis Sunday market and it honestly didn't last the rest of the day.
-
I was wrong - it's worth more now than I paid for it :

Not unless someone pays that it isn't :D
-
Our jeweller friend did show me a TAG (£ 4,600 I think). It was a nice looking watch but the face was far to big for my slender wrist. The mechanism did work superbly but when all said and done it did only tell my the time and I already knew what date it was ;)
-
You'd need to unlucky or stupid to need a new watch every year Stoop so your figures don't cut the mustard. Your time piece will date eventually like my mum's gold watch which works perfectly, a million years on but it looks too old fashioned to wear, so it lies in my jewellery box.
:D
-
Slightly off topic, but I would appreciate Stoop's watch much more if I could stop him in Guvens and ask what time it was :)

If you wear a watch 24/7 365 days and pay £50 for it my guess is one year would be about right - if you were lucky. Anyway my figures more than stack up as it seems to have cost me nothing if I wanted to sell it. How much would a £50 watch be worth in 12 years time? Would the face still be unblemished like my sapphire crystal one? I guess not.
You won't convince me that a cheap watch is as good as a TAG - sorry they just ain't. As for 'dating' - they just don't.

I agree but they go around £400 to £500 without much trouble. Still not bad after 12 years use and being able to wear it as well :)
-
There are many things you can buy cheaper and there's no problem. There are some things you have to spend money on and shouldn't waste your money buying a cheap version. Instant coffee being one :)
-
and toilet rolls
-
Gin :)
Buy cheap, pay dear, as mother used to say.
-
Paint :-\
-
Paint brushes... made in China and guaranteed to give you a hairy wall.
-
Boxer shorts [:o]
-
Young, fit Turkish men to British women of a certain age :o
-
Stoop, my point is that they both do what they say on the tin......they tell the time.....only yours costs so much more to tell the same time as mine. Simples!:D
OMG Scunner....cheap chicory coffee? Boak! I agree. It has to be the real McCoy or nowt! I love Doewe Egberts. It's the Tag Heuer of coffees. :D

It's a bit like comparing a mini to a Rolls - both get you from a to b but one does it in style - simples :)
-
you're up early Stoop, did you wake up to see if you lost any sleep?:D

No - my wife's cheap watch was wrong ;):D
-
LOL bitchy bitchy Stoop. You'll need to get her a Tag, just like yours. Anyway, Typical man, depending on a woman to get you up in the morning!!!:P
I like your comparison between the mini & the rolls, proving it's a status symbol for show now rather than a poractical item, so me, my Argos watch anf humble Toyota will agree to disagree this time. :D
-
I'm off to see if I can buy a cheap dictionary ;)
-
My husband has a Rolex which I bought him for our Wedding Anniversary 4 years ago. We went into one of the fake watch shops in Hisanoru and the guy immediately looked at my husbands arm and then said.. "I will swap you all my watches for that one". So it looks like the real thing can be distinguished from the fakes. I also think that a good watch will last a lifetime and can be passed on in the family and will always hold it's value and in most cases appreciate in value. Probably a better investment than Bank savings.
-
Jacqui - swap my number plate for your hubbies watch?
OK maybe not.
-
Jim, I cannot believe you would give up your beloved number plate!!
