Does anyone know wether I can take a laptop (weighs 3 kilo) and a small handbag as hand luggage am flying with Thomas Cook, or wether if you take a laptop you can only take the one item?

Most often TC don't even ask to see hand luggage, although I have heard of occasions when they have and even weighed it. If you are worried, do what we do - take a holdall and chuck handbag & laptop into it :)

Yep, we do the same Scunner. Only one piece of hand luggage each, but it's big enough to hold numerous things, including handbags, food etc. :D

I regularly take a laptop, just bung it in my backpack along with handbag and anything else that will fit in!! Doesn't sem to be a problem but have had to take it out at security for separate scanning.

Thomas Cook only allow one piece of hand luugage and it must not be over 5 kilos in weight. They are very strict, hand luggage is weighed and if it goes over 5 kilos you will be charged £12.00 per kilos. Had ours weighed going out and coming back. May/June this year. Going out my husband's bag was 5.8 kilos he was told to take out the extra and put it in my bag!!! When we did return we were in a queue for 1 hour while people argued about over weight luggage including hand luggage, A couple in front of us had a bill of over £100 cases were over weight and hand luggage was over 8 kilos each, it was a nightmare.
Put your laptop in a large bag but make sure it's not over 5 kilos. ;)

Our experience is the exact opposite Jacqui. We have never had our hand luggage weighed. It maybe because we only have one piece between two (not including the present Mrs H's hand bag which is normally a small one).
It drives me crazy when I see some people lugging huge bags on board, stuffing then in the overhead lockers and not going near them till they land at Dalaman. So I would have no problem with hand luggage being weighed.
By the way, what are the rules regarding childern's buggies.

The 4 huge bags we used to stuff into overhead lockers were 20kg a time of things we were bringing home. No problem since that IS the entitlement and it is the airlines, not us, who are strangling the weights you can take AND trying to push passengers away from checking in hold baggage and towards carry-on only.
When we go to Ireland we can easily do a very long weekend away on hand luggage alone, when Jet2 and the others are charging us to physically check in anything at all, I'm more than happy to take every gram of hand baggage allowance they give.

We had not used T.C. for a while. Globespan were good no problem. This was our first experience with T.C. for a long time, when we got to the Airport there where signs flashing up on the screens over the checks-in saying "One piece of hand luggage only up to 5 kilos, hand luggage must be weighed" we where amazed, and right enought each piece from all passengers was weighed. Not so bad going out, but coming back was unbelieveable, I thought a riot would break out with the queue as there was so many people with overweight luggage. Again all hand luggage was checked. I think it's just another way to make money by T.C. They are up to every trick in the book.

The other extreme of this is to look at Easyjet as an example - you can check into the hold nothing at all as part of your "basic" ticket, but no restrictions on hand/cabin baggage weight as long as you can lift it up into the overhead lockers. They don't want you to check anything in. They want you to print off your own boarding card and the first they see of you is at the gate. BUT, if everyone does what they want, there's no way in this World that it will all fit in the overhead lockers.

The point I was trying to make is that hand luggage should surely be for items that you might wish to use during the flight. If there are things in there that you don't need during the flight, then they should be in your case.

Not at all, hand luggage these days is the only thing you don't have to pay extra to take! Blame the airlines not the passengers!!!

Well said, Scunner. who doesn't go on holiday without taking a suitcase with them? If the airlines treated us like human beings instead of cattle then I, for one, wouldn't try and stuff as much as possible in my handluggage. AND buy more at the airport such as toiletries, books etc. I don't want to travel ladden down to the floor but will be damned if I have to pay extra for privilige of wanting to bring shampoo etc with me.

The wife returned last week with TC.Unfortunately she had had a fall the day before.She put her 5kg hand baggage allowance in her case.The case weighed exactly 25kg.The wife explained that her hand luggage allowance was in the case, but if they wanted her to, she would unpack it and place in hand luggage.They were very good and said no probs. :)
Only ever had a problem with overweight baggage and that was with Thomsonfly.Found the check in staff miserable as well.:(:-\

Another thing I've noticed since hold baggage became an extra is the time it takes to get everyone on the plane and seated. Even with boarding by row number, everything seems to back up all the way back from the plane. I suspect this is down to a vast increase in people needing to stow hand baggage before taking their seat - as a direct result of the airlines charging for checking in hold baggage.
We're off to Ireland for a few days and used to take one suitcase for the 4 of us - now we have to pay for that we won't, we'll be looking to lift up 4x hand baggage into the overhead lockers.

I think it's disgusting that airlines are charging "extra" for hold luggage. I'm sure we used to pay for it anyway in the ticket price, but, like everyone else, I'm now putting more and more things into my hand luggage and keeping it with me, rather than in a suitcase. We've never had our hand luggage weighed (or even looked at!)
When we lost out with kthy (with 25 kgs hold luggage each included), we re-booked with Monarch, with charges for each case. Between three of us, i have booked two cases going out, and only one coming back ( :o ).
We'll just leave anything we can in the apartment and put the smaller case inside the bigger one to bring it home, and make do. (We did this on our last visit in early June. Then we had some decent weather at home and had no summer clothes to wear!! :D )
Some airlines are charging more than £30 each for your luggage - this really adds up when you've got a family. Hubby never used to take hand luggage; now he takes a holdall with his clothes in it, instead of a suitcase!! :)

I brought my laptop but no handbag. i packed this in my suitcase in case i needed one - or two. you can only bring ONE piece of hand luggage. They didn't weigh it though; i kept it on my back.

On exit from Dalaman they also check your laptops twice once at the first security check where upon they write down its serial number and then again when you get to the gate where upon they check it matches with the serial number on their sheet.We were a bit alarmed the first time they did this but now welcome the added security measures.

I normally take my laptop and my handbag in a back pack, i have never yet had a problem, i have flown in 44 times. but i do know if you are over weight they will charge, in may i was 2k over i was charged £12.00 per k. Not so funny!

Surely if everyone kept within the weight limits the check ins would be quicker and less stressful. I know we are all different, but I will bet there are lots of times when people are charged over for luggage that they have carried on holiday and have never used or had on. By the way I still think the airlines are robbing bassas, but if we all stuck to the limits then no problems. :)

Thank goodness they were not so strict when we bought our place and started taking across various things, more like 30/35 kilos each, that was approx 4 years ago.

Very true, when we moved over we arrived at Stansted with one way tickets and eight full suitcases (plus 4x hand luggage). KTHY (God bless them) let us off [:o]
