Title: The Secret Tourist (BBC1)
Post by: Scunner on August 13, 2010, 00:06:21 AM
I am indebted to this TV programme which shows dirty hotels and cons that you might become a victim of on holiday. One in particular they said was called "The taxi con". Kindly they took the time to show exactly how an unsuspecting tourist might be conned by an unscrupulous taxi driver into paying more than they should.

What happens is, the taxi driver takes a longer route and charges you more.

Wonderful, informative TV [|)]

Did you see the state of that Hotel Soviva in Tunisia? Disgusting, after doiing the swab test that the toilet bowl was cleaner than the bedside table? And the gunge that was on the telephone handset, yuk!
Bit mad though, as they found hairs on the bedsheets,  :othat they still slept in them and just covered pillow with their beach towel! Horrible! Fab programme though, wonder how you apply to go on, would love to do it!

I can't abide Matt Allwright. Would be delighted if someone on The Secret Tourist and/or Rogue Traders gave him a slap.

Did anyone see the episode that looked at the all-inclusive in Marmaris? Food was so disgusting, if it wasn't eaten at lunch then it was re served at dinner and food temperatures were mostly at 35/6 degrees.

Pool was gross too and rooms were hardly touched when it came to cleaning. Bleurgh [xx(]

Yes and as I've been banging on for years, it is these programmes that do so much harm for Turkey. Hotels like the one in Marmaris are exactly what people who are not keen to try Turkey think it is all like. The truth is quite different of course. Nobody wants to make a programme about how superb the food is at Club Letoonia, or how crystal clear the pools at Lykia World are.

Admittedly it doesn't paint a good picture of Turkey. However I've found that personal recommendations from people you know have more power than tv programmes. So many people I know have gone to Turkey this year and said the reason they went was because it was recommended and also the exchange rate was good.

Now is probably a bad time to tell I read another 'Love Rat' story a week ago. This guy was from Fethiye funnily enough. Exactly the kind of publicity it needs.

I had a customer a few years back who told me she had bought 4 "Take a Break" type magazines at the airport for the journey, and three of them contained Turkish love rat stories. You women, they put the stories in your favourite magazines and still dozens head out there and fall for the same old rubbish!

'You women'?! Cheeky beggar, not every girl falls for it. Lads can try what they like, I always know there's another girl in next week. Thats what the other women need to keep in mind when they're being chatted up.

Or maybe I'm just a cynical girl  ;)

Glad I am not the only one that thought this program to be absolute tosh. Yes it does harm resorts for sure. Turkey in particular I think people have pre-conceived ideas about so any negative press is reaffirming that belief. My boss had the pleasure of being able to afford a holiday at Lykia World in Olu deniz last year. When she was younger she worked on cruise ships and has travelled the world then and since she has married, she is not short of money and beleive me the most particular person I know about quality of food, accomodation, everything really! She told me that honestly that was the best resort that she has EVER stayed on in terms of quality, everything was absolutely perfect, the food, staff, entertainment, accomodation, beautifuly landscaped gardens and lovely private beach. I thought she could never be pleased but there you go! I was expecting her to come back and be disappointed! All I have ever done is look through the gates because all inc is not for me. Turkey in my mind is for everyone and can be whatever you want it to be. It is a beautiful country for everyone I am not easy to please and it is definately a very pleasing place. These programmes are such bloody rubbish yes you should be on your guard always I know but I just think it increases paranoia about countries that people may of been considering.

In episode 1 (I think) there was another complex scam which they enacted for our benefit. Two old biddies booked a boat trip in Spain with a couple of men at the harbour. When they came at the agreed time for the trip the men had gone and so had their money. Ingenious.

They weren't old biddies were they Keith!! Yes absolutely ingenious scam reminded me of kids TV actually where they play tricks on kids very simple and hardly shocking! I think that they just try to make programs up out of nothing now we have so many channels. No more quality TV.

They weren't spring chickens either Linda! Yes you are right, I half expect Barney to pop up with "You've been pranked by the prank patrol". :D

Apologies to members with no young kids, that would have made no sense  ;)

Funny how the "old biddy" stories always attract the reader, myself included, but not heard of any for ages, but then again I am not a regular reader of mags, but will get them in the airport next week,:P
and the programme in question is far too like rogue traders, rubbish,

It also surprises me that they can find parents willing to take their children into a hotel with dodgy food, highly unhygienic practices and pools brimming with bacteria - surely that goes totally against the whole parenting idea? We went to a hotel in Belek for a week and spent most of it (the kids and I) in hospital with food poisoning - we had been to the hotel before and it was very good, but I felt guilty for years for the kids going through that. Knowingly taking them in to a health hazard is just impossible to comprehend for me.

Another collection of expensive jollies this week, all acted out by people who must be pinching themselves at their luck to get a 2 minute bit part in a pointless BBC holiday resort sketch. We were shown in great detail a con called "The Switch" or something. What happens is, you go into a camera shop and buy a camera. When they give you the box they've swapped it for a much cheaper camera. Who would have thought it.

Then scam 2. When you are sitting outside a cafe having a relaxing drink, someone who happens to have access to the floors above the cafe drops a fake pigeon poo splat down onto your table. His accomplice is sitting at a nearby table and helps clear the mess from you/your table. In the meantime the poo man comes all the way down from his lofty hideout and nicks your handbag!

If the BBC want someone to dream up scams like this I can probably knock them out at a rate of 100 per hour :-\

And the girl who goes undercover each episode is just as irritating. You would think everyone she meets is a murderer by the way she talks, and her findings are certainly less than scientific. Last night they visited 15 jet ski renters in Cyprus:

About the people hiring out the jet skis: "One of them was even drinking beer"

Scientific fact: "6 of the 15 hirers weren't really watching us when we were out on the jet skis"

Total rubbish from beginning to end.

Ha Ha, yer gota laf, the poo dropper was the manager, ;) it was the helpful couple that knicked the bag and it was so obvious to anyone sitting at tables nearby :). Saying that I have fallen for scams :-\. But not this time I have printed off photos of - Dodgey money man outside clothes shop and touchy touchy man.:D.
