What does this all mean?
-
It means that hotels may be busy but due to high competition are seeing more money coming in as far as turnover goes but not making enough profit to show that revenue has increased. Dare I say it, selling Efes for 3.5 lira is one classic example of how to look busy, make good turnover but not make any profit. Many bars and restaurants don't last a year, we all have to work out what this new one was last year etc. This is because business is not about being busy, it's about making money. The same goes for increases in prices (such as the great increases in wholesale meat prices in Turkey recently). Restaurants are so worried about people going next door that menu prices don't increase in line with wholesale prices, so again lots of busy people running around making less than ever before.
:D

i think a lot of the problem can be put down to the increase in the amount of all inclusive offers in such a small area here in Ovacik, last year you had at least two family owned hotels that i know doing BB for 2 pound per night (madness)and just the other day a hotel was advertising 3 pound PPPN all inclusive (yes 3 pound)people (tourist) are only venturing out for a walk and a couple of beers of an evening, so i can see there being big problems coming soon for the guys that pay the stupid rents being asked, and then dropping the prices to try and look busy and as Kieth said not making a profit, i just hope the boys that have worked all year get there wages at the end of the season, unlike the last few years.:-\

3 Pounds per night, all inclusive ??? You can only get food poison and infection from pool for that price :)

Well that is also a good point - you only have to look at Belek - where finding a hotel that isn't a 5 star all inclusive is pretty hard to do. Venture into Belek itself or Kadriye and you pretty much have the town to yourself. Man on stool sits outside his empty kebap salon, man with stool sits outside his empty leather shop and so on.
AI definitely doesn't help a town but our area isn't heavy on AI, certainly not like Belek or Alanya - and also it means that people who do come on that basis can easily find a non-AI hotel in the Fethiye area for next year if they liked what they saw and fancy getting out and about.
I still maintain the biggest enemy of (and in time danger to) the Calis restaurant is the restaurant next door. I hope that some learn soon that it is better to have one family paying a fair price for a good meal and service than to have a full house of people sitting over a beer because the football is on :-\

Keith makes a good point about AI killing of an area, stayed AI (not my idea)at thr Royal wings hotel, Antalya last Sept, hotel, room, food, value for money all excellent, but when I went to leave the complex I was actually stopped by security !! had to show room key and twenty questions, generaly intimidating even told nowere to go and no transport, thought I did not know about the dolmus.
During all the time I was there did not see anybody else leave the complex so no money for local bars shops ect and keith was right again Belek center was dead bar owners sitting around outside.
P.S. Stayed with Turkish friends on holiday in Antalya and at their home in Istanbul, I am not saying things were cheaper with them in tow but level of service, hospitality and value for money shot up and taxi fares were remarkably consistant. ;)

I agree with above points but also think as I have said before, that calis ie the restaurants, need to up the anti, the quality, both on service and food is'nt constant in many restaurants apart from one Bella mammas, we had more than a few disappointing meals on our last visit.Bee
