Title: Foxes.
Post by: scouser2 on August 18, 2010, 09:21:41 AM
We took my daughter to the airport 2 weeks ago.On the way back we saw a fox, the first one we had seen whilst living here in Turkey.
On Sunday morning (about 3-30) the wife said she had seen another fox, although I didn't see it myself (I thought she had had too much 'falling down water'). However I saw it myself this morning.Whilst it was a magnificent sight it appears to have put his scent all around our building and our dog is going absolutely nuts trying to figure out where it is, to the extent that it has been burrowing holes all over the garden.
I just hope the farmer (who keeps chickens)over the road doesn't see it!

Yes, they are always there when we do the late night/early morning airport run. They play on the Uzumlu to Fethiye road. They seem to be a lighter colour thsn the UK ones.

Seen them on several occasions, running around the uzumlu road. Bet they cause issues with the local's chickens etc.

Are the foxes or the local jackals. We have seen jackals which are smaller than foxes but easily confused.

I hope he does.  I hate foxes, they are the only animal apart from man that enjoys killing.  We used to keep chickens, ducks, geese. It is heart breaking to see what a fox does.  I remember coming home one day and finding 36 chickens in pieces, some without heads some without feet all that  was left was one little chick that was hiding. We think her Mother must have tried to attack the fox, to protect the chick as she was dead too.:(  I really would not have minded if the fox was hungry and took one chicken, that's nature, but to kill them all is unspeakable :o

Sounds more like a few dogs to me.

Foxes live in the hills/mountains and only come down during the night for a scavenge around the towns and villages and they will take a chicken given the chance, most chickens are locked away at night.

Our chickens, ducks and geese where always locked up at night.  However, the foxes around our way come out in the later afternoon.  This happened at 3.30pm.  Next year foxes took all the chickens again, plus all my ducks and then killed my lovely peacock Percy and his two wives.   I have a picture of a fox taken last year lying  by our garden pond at 1.00pm lunchtime.  He did not lie there for long!!!  A couple of years ago the farmer who was cutting the corn in the next field came and told me he saw a fox with one of our ducks in his mouth carrying it up the field. I was so mad as the ducks were pets and very tame.  We live on 3 acres of farm land and there are no dogs around us.   Foxes are getting really cheeky and they know where the food is and when it's available they will not sleep all day if there are chickens running around. :(

Read the
"Does surplus killing represent a "waste" of energy & resources for a fox?" section on the following link:

http://www.wildlifeonline.me.uk/questions_answers_foxes.html#kill

It goes some way to suggesting why foxes do what they do.  If you understand, it is easier to cope with.

Sorry, but a page on the internet would not help to cope with seeing some of the terrible massacres we saw, particularly upsetting when you try to pacify two crying children who see their pet birds torn to bits.   We tried restocking many times, but our lovely peacock and our two pea hens were the last straw.  The fox won.

Do you blame the foxes or the people who cage the prey so that it cannot run away ?

Our stock was never caged.  All our birds where free to roam all day.  The only time they were locked up was at night when they willingly went into their housing even the ducks had their own duck house by the pond, our stock were never attacked at night.  So, simple answer to the question.. I blame the foxes.:(

I don't think that a fox does anything that is 'unnatural' for a fox (even though we, as humans, cannot understand what is driving it) and so I cannot 'demonise' a fox. I would disagree that a fox is the only other animal, apart from man, that enjoys killing. Put a dog amongst a flock of sheep and watch the result !

Cats.  I love them, but they are consumed with the urge to hunt and kill anything that moves.Admittedly possibly not chickens though.

A dog is a domesticated animal and some dogs are trained to work with sheep and do a good job, so I cannot demonise all dogs, all dogs are not killers, however, I can demonise all foxes as they are killers who do enjoy killing for fun whenever they get the chance.
I used to live in a large town in England  and like lots of people who have a romantic idea of foxes I always thought I loved them and hated the idea of anyone killing them.   I moved to farm land in Scotland and soon changed my opinion of foxes after experiencing them first hand.   Think of this analogy if foxes did not look so cute and beautiful (and incidentally, they actually stink) if, say, they looked like great big rats, would town people still love them so much?
Anyone can debate foxes with me, but how many people who speak up for them, have had any experience of foxes?
and Yes Rindaloo, we also had a cat who was recovering from a bad leg injury taken by a fox, which I don't even want to think about.

OK, no point in continuing. You believe foxes kill for fun; I don't know, but after reading the research on the subject, I am not convinced.

Reading just a few paragraphs does put it into perspective though.
