Title: For Fellow Wine Loving Cheapskates (UK)
Post by: Scunner on August 31, 2010, 18:16:10 PM
If anyone is looking for a good deal, Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio is well worth it's full price but is currently part of Asda's 3 for £12 and is a steal at £4 a bottle.

Also if you like red there is Yellow Tail Shiraz included in the same deal, very good too.

As recommended by Scunner :D

My good Lady and I have just finished our dinner, and I opened a bottle of Pinot Grigio from 'Casato' wine cellars, don't know how much it cost, don't care, (it was a gift), but it is quite a nice drop of 'plonk'.
By the way, Loz has had ONE small glass of it, and is her usual 'apres vino', self, eyes have blurred over, inane smile, making silly, (SCARY) suggestions, and I really will have to 'spell-check' everything that she writes on the lap-top for the next 24 hours!!!!
Why, Oh Why did she marry a Jock 'wee-artist??      (Well, I do know why, but that is our business!!!!)
Gordy. : :):D:D:D :-\

Just read the messages and thought I'd add to them.  It may not be applicable in your area but, Tesco (Minehead) have 25% off 6 bottles of wine for this week only - probably because Morrisons opens on Monday.  However, I also have a voucher for £6off if I spend more than £40, so Tesco, here I come this afternoon!!

Colwyn,

As members of the forum whom I have had the pleasure of meeting when on holiday will, I'm sure, readily testify, I do not drink much. I tend to confine myself to the occasional gin and topic, more to be sociable than for me own pleasure or gratification.

I have however, on the very rarest of occasions, enjoyed a nightcap of Kahlua with ice. Very nice it is too. :)

Mrs H, on the other hand, drinks Kahlua more like cherry juice than an alcoholic beverage ;).

Asda are doing the very nice Faustino VII Rioja @ 3 for a tenner - I think it's nice but also Faustino VII Rioja Blanco at 3 for a tenner too and that for me is a better white than the red is red, if you see what I mean!

This is unbelievably good for £4 a bottle at Asda:

Lindemans Tollana Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Normally £9.02 which I'm never sure about when they make such claims but it's definitely more of a £9 wine than a £4 wine...

We watched a programme with Tim Lovejoy about 4 years ago where wine was being tried.  They had a Chilean which called Errazuriz which was voted the best and Tim Lovejoy said it was one of the nicest reds he had tasted.  After this we eventually found it in a small shop specialising in wines
and it was really good wine.  Since them we found it is sometimes on sale in Tesco, Asda and Morrison but they never seem to have it for long. It's usually about £6 to £7 per bottle.  If you ever see I would recommend you give it a go.

I am sometimes sceptical about "special offers", "half price" and so on. But I saw the Isla Negra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, Chile 2010 (red)that we have been buying at Morrisons' for £4.50 on sale in Tesco for £8.99. But even better value currently is the French Le Petiole (Ventoux Rouge) half price at £4.99 - very nice.

I was told by a the shop assistant in lovely wine shop in Pitlochry that Chilean wines are so  good because they are made with one type of grape instead of the mixes that some other places have to make them better.

Some  information that I thought I should share:D

The price of wine in our supermarkets has been quietly creeping up over the last few years. Although sometimes you can get something quite drinkable for less than £4 we find that, more often than not, we are in the £5-5.50 price range for an OK red. Some years ago I signed up the Laithwaite mail order company thinking to buy four cases a year for good weekend drinking. Now I find I am turning to them more frequently when they have offers. Today I ordered 15 bottles which, including shipment, avaraged out at £6.50 a bottle, and since I've drunk most these wines before, and anyway have never had a duff bottle from them,I am pretty sure they will be fine. (Also, I don't have to traipse round the damned supermarkets with screaming kids and their screaming mothers and with old women blocking the aisles with their trolleys while they have a gossip or using them to try to run me over or crush my toes).

I spotted one or two good NZ Marlboroughs on at a good prices last night. Less than £5 a bottle for a NZ Sav Blanc is pretty good.

The difference is that Tesco is generally more expensive anyway. For example, yesterday two of the bottles we bought were Isla Negra Merlot Reserva. This was £4.49 original price and with the offer reduced to £3.37. Tesco price for case of 6 is £9.49 per bottle.

Not so sure about that Colwyn. I think it's swings and roundabouts with beers and wines. I went into Morrisons on Thursday and checked their wine prices against what I normally buy from Tesco and they were generally more expensive. They currently have lager on offer of 3 for £20 but if you look at the bottle sizes they are all 275ml or less. I prefer to go for the 330ml deals at Tesco when they are on.

Factor into that an 8 mile round trip to M's and our 10% discount at Tesco and you can see why we shop locally  :)

If you can get a free delivery code for Tesco wines online it is helpful as their prices are often vastly cheaper than in store - for exactly the same wines. In store, well worth trying is Blaxland Estate Shiraz at £4.99 - half price apparently although I wouldn't be buying too many bottles of it at a tenner  ;)

Nice to be thought of, thank you Heather  :)

The magnificent aforementioned Gallo Five Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, normally £6.99-£9.99 is £3.75 at Tesco wines (£4.99 in store) and free delivery over £50. Another good one for white lovers is Tesco's own Pinto Grigio, really pleasant and around a fiver in store but a touch over £3 online.

Five Oaks is one of my most favouritest reds, ludicrous at £3.75 a bottle...

Lagunilla Rioja Reserva reduced from 12.49 to 4.99.

So I quickly ordered a case (of 12), redeemd the voucher, accepted free delivery and have some rather nice wine on the way reduced from £150 full price to £50 on offer. Merry Xmas.

Asda are doing Lindos Peak Merlot - I found it on one of the 'ends' for £3.50 a bottle, and returned to find none at the end but in the general reds area. It's possibly one of the smoothest red wines I've ever had, worth every one of the 350 pennies.

It looks like this:

Let me know what you think if you give it a try.

p.s. Members who's local Asda is the Perth one need not attend   ;)

A good call for this wine---Local Store had only 6 left which disappeared into my basket. Thanks for the recommendation, Scunner. Had been priced at £6.48 per bottle and was offered at 2 for £7.
A mellow merlot from La Mancha which would meet the approval of Sancho Panza.

First recommendation for 2014.

Tesco El Pinsapo Gran Seleccion Rioja; was £9.99, now £4.99 - but buy 2 six bottle cases online and it is a further 25% off = £3.74 a bottle with free delivery.

One of my favourite grapes - Pinot Noir. Best vineyards now reputed to be in New Zealand (seriously expensive) and Chile. Morrison have the Chilean "Bicicleta" by Cono Sur on offer for a very good £4.99 (Tesco £6.99) AND 25% off if you buy a case of 6. Less than £3.75 a bottle. Thank you, that will do nicely.

Yes it is - buy it through Tesco wine online and the quantity discounts are available.  I believe its down to the fact you are making an online purchase with a supplier who is based in England.  Curiously, its the local store who makes the deliveries!

Just had a bottle of wine called "16 Little Black Pigs" a south Australia shiraz 2012.  Have to say it was really nice, very smooth.   I am amazed the title is allowed!!
Anyway, we got it as a present from our daughter and son in law in a box of wine from Virgin.   We would buy it again as we really enjoyed it.

I think little black pigs are quite acceptable farm animals to name a wine after Jacqui :D

So do I Scunner, but my Granddaughter's Nursery have put out an edict that the words to Ba Ba Black Sheep are now to be sung as Ba Ba Pink Sheep????   I forgot a few days ago and sung Ba Ba Black sheep to Erin, who was totally mystified, this is taking P.C. just too far.
This really hacks me off as there are no pink sheep, but there are black sheep.  The words in children's books have now been changed to Pink Sheep... What a crock...

But surely to call a wine "16 Little Black Pigs" would upset devout muslims and put them off buying it? Oh, hang about a minute ...

Last year I could have got a picture of pink sheep.  this year they are yellow.  Plenty black sheep in fields around here.
Farmers trying to protect from sheep rustling are dying their sheep!!!

Have you seen yellow sheep around here Heather? I swear, fields of them, there's one flock close to the motorway near Kinross.

Sainsbury's 7 8 9 Pinot Grigio is a superb wine, currently 2 for a tenner. I know you can get cheaper but this is a great price for this one.

Hilary found a Morrisons voucher in her handbag £5 off when you spend £40+ due to expire today. So she sent me off there this morning to get 12 Cono Sur or maybe 6 of those and 6 La Bodega Malbec which we enjoyed last night (£4.99 no special offer but also 25% off for 6. The result? Cono Sur sold out; La Bodega sold out. Bad word, bad word, expletive. Still I bought a range of other stuff to be drinking while waiting to find another offer on good Pinot Noir.

There are some good wines in Home Bargains at really cheap prices.   Got a 2010 Rioja last week that was so good, went back for more today.

There is a very good Malbec and today I bought a bottle of Rocky Trail a Californian Merlot.  I bought one bottle for us to try. Just tried it, it was very good and very smooth and only £3.99 a bottle.

If you like champagne for special occasions, try this, I recommend Llidl for their excellent winning brand, only £11.99, we tried it in August and it really is good. Ridiculous price but special (I sound like I work for them) but really very good. Nice for Xmas.  ;D

Morrisons - three bottles Vina Maipo (Classic Series, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chile) = £12. I doubt it will last much longer.

I have found a red wine I simply cannot recommend. It is called Les Aspres Reserve 2013 and is on offer at £7.50 at Morrsions currently (was £10). I have no idea how good it is.

What happened was, a fairly mature couple were filling their trolley with it (seriously, over 40 bottles at a guess) and I had a moment similar to the one at the Stock Exchange in Trading Places when everyone realises the Duke Brothers know something and all join in. The couple were not just of senior status, they were both not the tallest - and I found the wine, on the top shelf but as good as emptied. Then I spied just one, right in the corner at the back which they obviously couldn't have reached.

So now it is mine, I will report back in due course.
