Title: Turf Caterpillars
Post by: karaokemark on September 05, 2010, 09:34:38 AM
has anyone had problems with these, we had new lawns laid earlier this year, for the last few weeks we have watched it die in patches as these caterpillars eat there way across, our neighbours have the same problem. Does anyone know of any treatment for them and does the grass grow back.
thanks
Mark

Dursban 25 (chlorpyrifos-ethyl)is an organo phosphorous compound which attacks the pest's nervous system.

When used commercially on fruit and vegetables there is a 7 day harvest interval after application.

I know that you will not be eating the grass.

However, if you use this product please make sure that you wear gloves, facemask, googles, overalls and rubber boots. No one should go onto the treated area for at least 48hours.

Hi Apollo,
Have just read your advice and we have the same problem in our grass. However we also have a cat so I am reluctant to use an organophosphate such as this. Also I am guessing that if the caterpillars come to the surface when this chemical does its job, and then they are eaten by the birds, then the birds will also be poisoned.
Is there anything else that we can use without running the risk to the cat and the local bird population?
Thanks for any advice,
Cathy
