Title: Beware
Post by: stoop on September 24, 2010, 09:50:10 AM
I just received an email from a forum member that showed up in my hotmail inbox marked 'no subject'.

The member is well respected and known by me and I clicked the link. Fortunately my macafee blocked whatever it was.

Just beware that emails from what appear to be friends just might not be. If in doubt don't do what I did:(

I'm running a scan as we speak just to make sure I haven't picked anything up and have emailed the 'sender' to let him know he may have been hacked.

I got this mail too - as I have had before in the past from another forum member although this isn't necessarily the connection.

Once you have had one spam mail from this person you will probably get more mails.

Any mail from a "friend" usually untitled and with only a web link in - it is always a sure bet its spam.

Mark as spam and delete without opening the link.

Than mail your friend to tell them - not sure what they can do about it though. I heard that if they change their password this helps...

There's a few victims about at the moment - my hotmail inbox is full of emails from friends who most certainly didn't send the email that has apparently come from them. Unless my friends really do want to sell me watches or improve the size of my ****!

it's part of the 'tripod' virus. Macaffee stopped the link from opening and I have told the 'sender'. As you say though - not sure what he can do.

Facebook crashed last night because of Hackers - this might be the source of the problem if anyone was online prior to that.

Everyone has been advised to change their passwords. It was reported on the BBC.

I had the same email from a member, I have had emails from him before, but did not open this as it's strange not to get a Subject.   Do I assume someone on this forum is collecting email addresses and sending viruses to other members by using an innocent member's email address?

It's pretty unlikely Jacqui - there are far easier ways to get email addresses than that. On CBF, not only would someone have to email you via the forum, but you would have to reply to them for them to even see your email address. There are far more efficient ways to reek havoc than that.

Sadly it's just one of those things. I was reading about someone who set up new unique email addresses so they could track what happened to them. They were only used once each ever, to join mailing lists on very reputable sites - blue chip UK companies. It was amazing to learn that emails from totally unrelated companies and spam emails started arriving. So it seems you never know who is selling on your email address.

Definitely never cuddly old CBF though, I promise.
