Hi all,
Another random question... Does anybody know anything about pigs? I've always wanted a pet pig but i'm after a breed that doesn't grow too big, about the same size as a small dog but don't know what kind to look at.
Thankyou in advance, you knowlegable bunch, you :D

Vietnamese potbelly make good pets.

And only grow to the size of a dog. A Great Dane!

They're a flippin nuisance, we use an electric fence to Keep them out of our garden. They dig it up so that it looks like a ploughed field. Quite why farmers buy ploughing attachments for thier tractors is beyond me. They should just get a few piggys :)

Have a look at Micro Pigs. They're the "must have" at the moment. Retailing at about £700 each.

micropigs- oh my god, I want one!

My friend and neighbour kept pigs. She had two black pot bellied pigs. Pigs have to be cleaned out every day, as they smell really badly, they must have shelter as they can get sunburnt as their skin is very like ours. They also have to be kept out of the rain as they can get a chill. They dig up any ground around them as it's their nature to root around in the ground, so you have to be careful where you keep them, they can dig up a small field in a couple of weeks and make it into a bog. They can also live up to 25 years. In short, they are a big liability.

And when they are overgrown they will make a lovely bacon roll.

Here's a story from two days ago about a woman who bought a £700 micropig as a pet. It now weighs 7 stone.

Unfortunately, you have to kill them at 6 months, if you intend to eat them ;)

noooo, i couldn't kill it! i intend for it to be a house pig and will make sure i am well educated in how to look after them properly as i would before taking on any pet. i couldn't get attached then have to part with it because i couldn't cope , that'd be awful.

Just get married Laurie, most wives think their old man is a pig sometime in their life, and he,ll probably never dig the garden up. ;):D:D:D

lol:D
I am getting married. The problem is i need him to dig my garden up so i can put a shed up and he wont!!!:D
I did think when i read jacqui's comment that my other half was probably more of a liability ;) and the way he carries on sometimes he'll be lucky to make it to 25years :D

If you do think you want a pig, go and visit someone with pigs first. I can tell you I could not get within 10 feet of my friends pigs as the smell made me feel sick. They say it's because pigs poo smells most like human toilets that we are turned off by them.

ooh, lovely.. lol. I'll look into it further because theres a lot i dont know and i've got 2 little ones to consider aswell. Its a lovely thought but i might find that its just not practical right now. if thats the case it'll have to wait and reconsider in the future if circumstances permit. Thanks for your help and advice so far everyone, it is really appreciated..
