Title: New visa rules have re-started again!!!
Post by: starman™ on November 02, 2010, 14:39:04 PM
As of yesterday British and Dutch citizens will now enter with a 6 month visa with a stay of no more than 90 days in that period. If you are a border runner now is the time to think about getting a residence permit.
Just got this from the central emniyet in Istanbul and waiting for more further news but we are already informing all our clients.

Well they did say it was just suspended and not cancelled completely. Seems they have now decided to go ahead.

So I assume that this applies to visas issued on and after the 1st November rather than current ones which may have a 180 day stamp?

There is no link as of yet. It comes from the foreigners police department where I have one of my employees everyday and get to find out all the latest news before it gets out in the media. Will learn more tomorrow when my guy is there again.

What are you talking about? I merely stated the facts as I understand them from what went on a few months back. That is the new visa rules WERE suspended and it seems now they have decided to go ahead with them.

If you think that gives me a thrill you must lead a very thrill free life.

Stoop has a place in turkey so may also be affected by the new visa regulations if he chooses to live there. I cannot see how you can round on him like that. Just as well you are not on cbf much if all you can contribute to a useful post is a slagging off. And remind me of the misery involved in getting residency. Thanks starman as usual an informative post. Shame Linda 1957 is no longer a member I would have enjoyed her post telling you that you were wrong!

The last time we all got very excited as the rules were written in what can only be described as gobbledegook (however you spell that). Some read and understood it one way and others read it another way. In the end and after much debate on here the British Consul came out and said the change had been suspended.

if this rule does come into effect then the problem i see is that those who are NOT living in Turkey "full time" but wish to stay "longer" than 90 days.... (extended holiday)... then there doesnt seem to be anything in place for them....
as they are not resident, neither are they a "tourist"......

Title: New visa rules have re-started again!!!
Post by: Julesp on November 02, 2010, 22:42:04 PM
Its not so much the people who want to stay longer than the 90 days, theyve always supposed to obtain residency by law to do this, it affects more the people who come out a few times a year. the headache of working out when the visa expires and how many days theyve already used up, that coupled with the shortage of flights or changes to flights as here in this topic

{A Link to an old CBF topic was here - no longer available}38238

just hope if they do implicate this new visa rule that nobody is too badly affected

We were all aware that the changes to the visa laws were on hold. But as I remember from a few months ago, reports said that 'notice would be given' before the changes come into effect. IF these changes came into force on Nov 1st, that's not giving people notice....not that should surprise anyone with how the Turkish govt works. So again, for the moment, it seems to be case of 'wait and see' till something becomes official.  Then hope that whatever was decided on Nov 1st, was just a case of more talk about it, and a decent spell of notice will finally be given.

A good point and it's made by the report from the British Embassy. However it also implies that it's going to happen later this year (or at least a decision and notification):

"The Foreign Ministry and UK officials will hold talks in the autumn on the question of visas and residence permits. The Ministry confirmed that any future change in procedures will be announced in good time before implementation to allow people to make their decisions and arrangements."

http://ukinturkey.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/living-in-turkey/visitors-who-overstay

However there is the usual disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

Quite right. This change (if it happens) will affect those like ourselves who have always intended to use their properties more when they retire fully from work.

Our intention was to go May/June and then Sept/Oct but this would mean (roughly) 120 days in 180 which would not be allowed. Turkey will lose our money for 4 weeks in that case and if you multiply that by the number of people in the same position it will mean a lot of dosh. It might also make us think about selling up to be honest as the hassle involved, coupled with the cost of flights etc etc might just tip us over the edge. I suppose we could just do the 3 months straight off but it's the removal of the choice that annoys me most.

If we lived there full time then having to pay for residency would at least allow us to come and go as we please but for the home owners who wants to enjoy their properties a little more but not live there permanently then it's bad news.

Do the turkish government see that that much of the cash any way, what with few if any resturants etc paying full taxes and most deals are done in cash. the locals might feel the pinch but what government worries about the locals. would the visa not work out for you if you came out May /june say 60 days one one visa then Sept /Oct another 60 odd days on another visa, you wouldn't be over staying on either.

I would say that the goverment gets most of it taxes from petrol then anything else. Just look at the price, 3.7 lira for a litre.

This would be our intention too. Our solution would be to take a cheap overnight flight to Istanbul in Feb to cover us Feb-Aug and then re-enter on a new visa in September. Its a solution but when we invested our savings in Turkey and purchased the property we didnt expect to have to deal with these kind of restrictions:(

Its not much different then the restrictions on tourist visas EU countries give to non EU nationals.
Title: New visa rules have re-started again!!!

It's certainly different to those given by the UK to non-EU nationals. Their visas are for a given length of time, not a maximum amount of time within a given amount of time.

I have wanted to ask opinion on this for a while so here goes :D

If you enter Turkey for the first time on April 1st (Visa 1) and use 61 days (go home May 31st) and then return on 1st Sept until say 30th Nov - can you just nip over to Rhodes / Meiss a few days before the end of September (when Visa 1 runs out) to renew and then start using Visa 2

Ian

Ps Even I am confused now!!!!

UK issues visas to Turks where they can stay 180 day in any one year period. I know several people including my boss that has this and she also had the same one for Canada when we crossed their border last week.

If you reach the end of the 180 day length of the visa, but havent reached anywhere near your 90 days in Turkey, do you still have to leave and spend a night sitting on a Greek island?
