Hi all,
I'm about to book our flights for next summer. Am i right in thinking that if we pay on credit card we are covered if anything goes wrong whereas we wouldnt be if we paid by debit card? debit would be easier for us but if we're not protected then it'll have to be credit card as i want to cover myself after all the horror stories i've read. I'm booking with flythomascook.com.

Probably better with credit card, debit card can be used but debate about whether covered or not, remember you pay a charge for use of credit card.
-
We always book with credit card. Full refund when Globespan went bust last year. We know of people who lost out by using debit card.
Flythomascook will charge you for using credit card 2.5% I think.
-
Agreed, I used to really resent the credit card charge but now am happy enough to pay it as a sort of flight only insurance. I have heard that perhaps you are also covered when using debit cards but not much evidence to support that.
-
thanks everyone, credit card it is then... ooh i'm so excited, it'll have been 3 years since my last visit. :D

We got an instant refund from our Lloyds Bank Visa Debit Card when XL went bust but we were lucky as its only VISA debit that protect.

I learnt so much last year when I filed online with the small claims court to get my money back from Goldtrail(before they went bust!), you are protected to some degree with debit card payments but only if you have charge back which you have to pay to have the privilege of, think it was about £12 per month, if you have chargeback it means the payment can be reversed up to a certain time limit.Would have loved to have known the outcome of the case what a shame soft girl here filled out the online form wrong and filled in the claimant and defendant as the same person, did not realise I had done this until I phoned small claims to see how my claim was going and it was pointed out to me,unfortunatley they wanted another £35 to correct this so I did not pursue the case in the end.

thomas cook also charge you when using your debit card.

Visa Debit Cards are covered by the Visa Debit Chargeback system
http://whatconsumer.co.uk/visa-debit-chargeback/
I have both a UK Natwest and Turkish HSBC Visa debit card for which no charge is made.
Credit cards transactions are only covered if over £100.00 so you need to ensure that your ticket providor does not debit each sector separateley if any are less than this amount .

Thanks for all of your advice everyone. I have now booked :D 3 weeks for 4 of us £1065 total!! i'm sooooo excited already [:o)]

If the tour operator/airline is a member of ATOL you are covered whether you pay by credit or debit card.

That is total rubbish. Airlines do not have ATOLs. If you book flights only with an airline direct, ATOL will have no involvement should the airline go bust.

I stand corrected.I have just been reminded by my partner that we booked through Travel Republic when Kiss went bust.So yes it is a load of rubbish.

From Working Lunch re- Visa Debit:
A Visa debit card offers significantly better protection for shoppers. Their scheme is called Visa Debit Chargeback and any bank that issues a Visa debit card has to comply with the scheme.
You can claim money back if the goods you buy are damaged, or the product or services are not delivered.
There is no limit on what you can claim. But you have to claim within 120 days of the date you expected the goods to be delivered or the firm going bust.
So this isn't as good as when I use my credit card?
You get better protection if you use your credit card.
The key difference is that when you claim on a credit card under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, the credit card company is legally liable.
But the Visa Debit chargeback scheme is not legally binding, so you don't have any legal redress if you are unhappy.

I do believe that Stoop pays for his flights using a credit card, in order that he is protected in case of the collapse of the airline. If Stoop pays more than he has to for something, it must be worth it ;)

I always pay for costly things with my Visa Credit card as it means I am not only protected but get lots of Tesco points into the bargain.
Just got a 22" Flat screen for the bedroom and booked a weekend for two in the Lakes for next April. Plus a brand new de-longhi 4 slice toaster and kettle (the kettle isn't 4 slice). Oh - and a couple of Xmas pressies (shhh)
All free and we have lots of vouchers left to spend.
Every Little Helps ;-)
It must be the Scottish blood in me :)

i paid for my 10 kthy flights...5 with a tescos visa mastercard, and the other five with a Santander (abbey) visa debit card. After much hassle and phonecalls to both companies....Abbey paid my money back into my current account within two days of them receiving my claim form. Tescos were another matter, and took approx 3 months!

Thing is you have rights with visa credit even if they drag their feet.
