Title: Balloon Trip in Cappadoccia
Post by: Old Daffodil on December 14, 2010, 11:24:46 AM
I recently found some photographs on my camera of a trip which we took to Cappadoccia.
A balloon flight was arranged as part of the trip but because of weather conditions it was cancelled, then as we were eating our breakfast someone rushed into the hotel restaurant and said that it was on again and we just dropped everything, rushed to the bus and drove to the site where the balloon was being prepared for take off.
Twenty of us climbed into the basket which was divided into sections for passengers and pilot. We were chatting to the pilot during the flight and he mentioned his parents own the Cappadoccia Hotel in Ovacik. We saw a balloon up near us carrying 36 Japanese tourists!
After the end of a lovely flight in which we saw a white horse carved out below for which Cappadoccia was once famous among other beautiful sights,we landed softly on the back of the truck and were able to climb easily down the ladder. As this was a maiden flight for all of us champagne was served to us in flutes to celebrate. Great experience.

Been there, done that and it was fantastic.  Would definitely recommend.  It was funny though, my 9 year old daughter half way through this once in a lifetime experience kept saying "can we go down now?":D

The landscape is amazing from land or air.

I did find it really interesting there too, pigeons lived in the ochre coloured tufa rock shown in the pictures and used to provide fertilizer to the farmers and a source of food. I never saw any pigeons when I visited though.
Spring or  Autumn are  good seasons to visit the area.
I found the paintings in the caves really moving and they recorded so many things mentioned in the Bible.

Hope that you make it there. Goreme is a pleasant area to stay. We called in to Konya for one day on the way back.It is known for the poet Rumi and whirling dervishes but there is a huge modern shopping mall there too if you want some retail therapy and has good hotels.
