Title: Kids, Soaps & Homosexuality
Post by: Scunner on February 08, 2011, 21:29:47 PM
I have always been uncomfortable with programmes like Emmerdale and Eastenders showing "same sex" relationships and I make no apology to anyone for that. I have no problem with same sex relationships, it's just too much for my 10 year old twins to be watching two men (or two women) kissing or whatever at ten past seven in the evening. They are simply too young for me to be forced to explain why they are doing what they are doing. It forces subjects that are too early in the evening to be explained too early in life in my opinion. I have managed to wimp out and avoid facing the issue so far.

I discovered that I must get this awkwardness from my mum. She was round ours when such a scene came on the telly. Being quick on her feet she immediately turned to the kids and through her embarrassment said that the two boys must be very good friends because they were giving each other a really big hug.

"No Gran, they're gay" came the reply :D

I remember very well the moment that Emily asked about the birds and bees, we were on our way out for a bike ride. She asked the question how are babies made- so we talked about daddy giving mummy a special seed which grew into a baby. It was good enough for the moment I thought- then she asked if the mummy swallowed the seed - only sometimes I replied!

I had to work out for myself how this breeding thing happened when I was at a tender age. I put it all together based on snippets of things I'd heard and the like. So I did get there, that a dad's thingy goes into a mum's thingy and eventually a baby would arrive. What disturbed me was not the idea of my parents doing something like that. More the concern that they might wake up while it was happening!

I'm sure our children would be mortified to think that their wrinkly parents were still indulging in such activities.

They need worry:(

When my boys were younger we had a discussion at the dinner table and the subject got around to my brother who has 7 children. My youngest son said  "doesn't Uncle John know about condoms, there are 3 in a box so he can do it 3 times for a pound"  We had to laugh. Children are so funny

Regarding sexuality and television. Sometimes we underestimate our childrens intelegence. They understand lots of things, and are much more accepting of people.

I agree Heather - however I am with Scunner - I wanted the choice in when to discuss such issues not be forced to discuss them because they were on TV before the watershed. The watershed still exists but the change is regarding what is appropriate for prewatershed- it seems to be getting closer to the knuckle.

Yes I agree with you there. My children have grown up now and I never watch any of the soaps but my grandchildren watch with their parents. I think there is too much on the telly that shows attitude and no respect for others. You see young people on the soaps telling their elders, including parents to get a life. I know what would have happend to me if I had said that or similar to my parents.

Part of the point of my initial story was also to point out that you as a parent may pussyfoot around wondering when and how best to tackle these sensitive issues and bring them to your kid's attention, while missing completely the fact that they have known for months but didn't think it important enough to even mention.
