Title: Washing Machine in Bathroom - but UK?
Post by: Scunner on March 09, 2011, 21:53:52 PM
One thing we liked in Turkey was not having the washing machine in the kitchen, and we would like to do something similar here - i.e. put it in the bathroom. Are there any electricians out there who know if that is allowed? I was thinking to have it fixed wired (not socket). That's only because I assume the rules will be strict, I'd actually be happy to have it plumbed in and when in use run an extension lead from the landing :D

I know regulations used to be strict on electricals in bathrooms but would welcome any advice from people who know the rules.

The rules used to be no portable appliance in the bathroom, as a washing machine is not portable then I think you would be ok.

Only run it off an extension lead if the person operating the machine is not significant in your life.:D

The idea of a washing machine in the bathroom is a brilliant idea, not sure how noisy it will be on a hollow wooden floor though.

Washing machines operating from a plug socket in a bathroom are commonplace throughout southern Europe. However I do think Bewva has a point about wooden floors. Most I have seen have been on programs like "A Place In The Sun" and have been on solid floors.

Why not the bathroom, you have shavers, hair dryers and hand dryers, why not a washing machine.  The only thing a friend pointed out to us when we enquired about putting a washing machine in our bathroom the life of the washing machine due to steam and condensation. Open a window?[?]

I'd suggest a call to the local council building control and ask them.
Mine is in the garage.

That's a strange place to have a local council building control.

I bet there was no issue with planning permission though. :)

One issue I had not thought of was if the macchine floods you will wreck your floor & ceiling below.
Found this on a website.

Can I install a washing machine in a bathroom?
A bathroom isn't an ideal place for a washing machine. For a start, if the bathroom is upstairs and washing machine flooded it could cause a lot of damage to the ceiling.

However, as far as the (UK) regulations go, it is OK to have a washing machine installed in a bathroom - as long as strict rules are adhered to. These rules are covered under the local authority regulations and need to be followed exactly. I don't have a copy of these regulations but one of the main criteria is that a person in the bath or shower (and presumably even on the toilet) should NOT be able to touch the washing machine. The washing machine should also be plugged in outside the bathroom and protected by an RCD.

If you must install a washing machine in a bathroom, seek out and consult the official regulations. Your local council will have them.

I am not sure about this one but regulations for gas boilers state you should not be able to touch it from the bath.
