1958'ish, I think, remember seeing some photo's of the damage in Fethiye somewhere, maybe wrong with the year but it was around then.

April 1957 was the last big one. Here is the front page of Hurriyet at that time (I was lucky enough to find it it in a shop in Fethiye):

Interestingly I nearly posted this article yesterday

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=a-new-earthquake-may-knock-the-door-official-says-2011-03-10

I think the last big quake to hit Turkey was the one in Istanbul in 1999 I remember it well as I flew home on that day and only learned the news when I got back

Lets hope this recent quake and Tsunami in Japan doesnt claim too may lives

Strange thing is I was reading on the 'net a few days ago that the next full moon would be the closest to earth it has been for about twenty years. I think the date is the 19th. It was suggested that the increased gravitational pull on the earth would cause all sorts of weather anomalies like earthquakes volcanic activity and tsunamis. Also watched the first part of a disaster movie on Tuesday where the moon was on a collision orbit with the earth :o A bit spooky that in the context of the article and the recent events!

Last big one was Istanbul in 99. I was in the thick of it and was scary. Official figures say 17000 died but that was the figure they stopped at because they had to mass move everything because of disease. They reckon around 40000 died.
