Hello all,my name is Matt and I'm off to Calis next month with a view to buying a place. Any advice or recommendations of people/places would be gratefully received.As I've never been there before it's a bit of a leap in the dark, but everyone seems to be saying nice things about the place , so fingers crossed !

Hi Matt,

You have come to the best place, here is a bit of information about Calis ;

Calis Beach ( pronounced Chalis ) is on the Mediterranean South West coast of Turkey just 45 minutes away from Dalaman airport.

The resort is very flat and so it is easy to get around, even though there has been quite a lot of building recently, there are still no high rise buildings, International hotels or the sort of large concrete holiday complex's you see in Spain, Portugal & Tenerife, in fact holiday homes are still separated by small pieces of land where local farmers grow crops or keep chickens & goats.

Calis Beach is sand & shingle and stretches for 4 km, it is never crowded nor covered in sun beds, a long stretch of the beach is lined with a block paved promenade, this prom is lined with restaurant's, small independent hotels and a few bars. the beach is an Internationally protected site for Caretta Turtles who come ashore and lay eggs here, if you are lucky, you may see baby turtles heading to the ocean. Make sure you have a meal before sunset, here on Calis Beach it's nothing short of spectacular.

Calis has a market each Sunday and it's a great way to spend a day, make sure you have lunch at the market, the Kebabs ( nothing like you get in England ) are really good and the Turkish pizza ( called Pide ) is cooked fresh on large hot plates by the local women, it is really good.

The nearest large town is Fethiye, ( pronounced Fet ee aay ) once again still a very Turkish place, no McDonalds, BK or KFC, Thank God !!
From Calis you can take the local bus called a Dolmus or better still a water taxi which is a small boat that takes about 20 minutes to sail across the bay, the views of the surrounding mountains as you sail across are wonderful.

Fethiye does not have a beach but it does have a big marina lined with loads of bars and restaurants, here you can book lot's of boat trips or better still, charter your own yacht, it costs a fraction of what you might imagine.

The big event in Fethiye is the Tuesday market, believe me, it is a great experience, there is also a fish market, you can choose your pick of the day's catch and then any one of the local market restaurant's will cook it and provide bread & salad for around £2

Like most things in Turkey, car hire is cheap, but to be honest a car is the last thing you need, ( sorry orange ) they run a minibus service called a Dolmus, this goes everywhere, for example, an organised tour to Saklikent Gorge will cost you around £15 each, yet hop on the Dolmus and its less than £3. For a few pence you can visit nearby Hisaronu, a pretty but commercial mountain town, the gorgeous Gockec, the lovely beach at Katranchi and the world famous Olu Deniz. However, if you want the independance of your own car, see our friends at orange rent a car ( hope that makes up for earlier comment !! )

Calis is really a great place whether it's beach, sun, shopping, history, good food or just relaxing.

Rimms

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum. Can't add much to the above except to say everyone has different likes and dislikes but we love the place and feel more 'at home' with every visit. We've made some good friends and hate leaving every time we have to. We've just got back and even in winter its beautiful (if cold and wet some of the time!)but the warmth of the people never changes.
