Size matters and they say that you must be able to get it in the overhead locker unaided. I am only taking hand luggage this time although we have booked hold luggage.

Just received this from Easyjet;
Hand Baggage

From April 5th we have updated our pricing policy for hold luggage and for oversized cabin baggage that needs to be checked into the hold.

The following charges apply:
At the airport check-in desk: If you purchase a bag to be checked into the hold and/or we notice that your cabin bag exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions, you will be charged £25 per bag
At the boarding gate: If you go directly to the boarding gate and your one permitted item of cabin baggage exceeds the maximum allowed dimensions you will be charged £40 and your bag will be checked into the hold
Remember: easyJet allows one item of hand baggage into the cabin per person; maximum dimensions are 56 x 45 x 25 cm.

To keep our fares low, be able to board the plane as quickly as possible and ensure your comfort onboard, if you bring more than one piece of hand baggage we'll check the extra piece into the hold. Hand bags, briefcases, laptops and laptop bags are all counted as one piece, so if you have a trolley and, for example, an additional hand bag or laptop bag you'll be asked to put those items into your trolley bag. If you can't consolidate your cabin baggage into one single item, one of your bags will be checked into the hold and we will have to charge you £40. We do this to ensure that we don't delay the boarding process and bring everyone to their destination on time.

Just to confuse things even further this is part of an email I received yesterday with totally different hand baggage sizes..

Hand baggage
We allow 1 item of hand baggage per person, including handbags & laptop bags. It must be less than 55 x 40 x 20cm. Extra / oversized bags will be put into the hold & a fee charged. The lockers fill up fast, so please be at the gate early to ensure there's space. If they're full we place larger bags in the hold, so recommend you use a small, light bag. Once onboard, please help us keep on time by putting only big bags overhead & small bags, laptops & duty free under the seat in front

I have emailed them as I had gone and bought the size case it says on (and still does)the web site asking if they'll refund the purchase costs...lol
Will let you know what they say...

As I mentioned in a different topic - the airlines caused all this by making extra charges for checked in baggage - all the recent flights I've been on have shown that people are doing whatever they can to make do with cabin baggage (including us!) to avoid these charges. The results are quite simply that there are way more cases than in years gone by needing to fit in the overhead lockers and there is a big delay in people getting that done and getting out of the way so others can do the same and sit down.

What do they do when there is physically too much baggage brought onto the plane? Take the ones that have nowhere to go and send them down the steps to be put in the hold, no charge of course. It's a shambles that delays boarding immensely and one thing is for certain, we the passengers didn't cause it.

Reply from Easy Jet to the different sizes for cabin baggage...

Thank you for contacting us.

I am pleased to confirm that each passenger can carry one item of hand baggage, with no weight restriction, although you must be able to lift it into the overhead locker unassisted.

So that baggage can be stored safely in the overhead locker, the dimensions cannot exceed 56x45x25 cms (including wheels and pockets).

I think that this is a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing but we are back to the larger size so all's well...

In addition to the "Standard Hand Baggage" you may also carry:
(a) one of the following: An overcoat; an umbrella, or a shawl; and
(b) one standard size carrier bag of goods purchased from the departure airport.

Taken from Easy Jet Conditions

Rule change   Item (b) now removed from terms and conditions

One would think, that if during the flight the locker door flew open weight would be of concern to the poor person this luggage fell on. Out on Friday our first fight on Easyjet to turkey always flown Tcook who have always been delayed, so will be interesting to see what C##P we get from them

After being delayed 1 hour in January while luggage was transferred to hold because every one brought on extra hand luggage and no space for  it  I can see some sense in there somewhere , but as Scunner says the problem was made worse by stupid luggage restrictions!!!

Thats strange George:

(b) one standard size carrier bag of goods ourchased from the departure airport...

we have been with easyjet lots of times and they have always insisted at the boarding gate that all duty free goods purchased MUST fit in the hold bag being taken on!!!

very interesting..

where did you find the details of this?

I sent an email to easyjet this week to get clarification on the duty free bought at the airport. Their reply was that one standard bag of duty free is allowed in addition to the normal handluggage allowance.

Also the extract taken from their website 5 mins ago shows how weight can be distributed amongst a group of two or more passengers.

If you are travelling in a group of two or more you may spread the weight of your luggage across the bags. For example, two passengers with a bag each may carry 20kg of luggage each, but if you wish to put 18kg in one bag and 22kg in the other, then that's okay with us. You've just got to remember that you cannot exceed the 40kg total weight allowance without paying additional charges.

It does not matter a hoot what is said in there t&c if the staff at the checkin and gate force you to put it all in one bag then they will, if you don't you wont be flying with them its as simple as that its a case of what the other hand says, these new conditions have been issued on the the 5th April just in time for the holiday rush, we have all been warned, look what happened at Bristol/Dalaman flight this week had more bags than passengers all had to get off the plane and ID there own bags found one item over a cricket bat that caused a 2 and 3/4 hour delay with 169 passengers on board and only 18 passengers going back to the uk

The main reason is the delay in loading passengers into the aircraft if the aircraft is on the ground and oversteps its departure time it costs the airline a heck lot more than its worth it is also seen by the airlines as another way of getting more money out of you as scunner says if they stopped the restrictions and made it the same as long haul baggage rates all would be well, I have said it before they always allow 50kgs of baggage allowance per passenger for fuel calculations so what the problem for the airline to allow 25kgs per person including kids.............none

Up until a few years ago I used to get most of my hand luggage put in the hold as well to save carting it round the airport.
Never used to be a problem.

We have just done the Dalaman to Stansted return trip.

No problems at all.

We both had cases for the hold, plus hand luggage and we both had a bag of duty free.
