Three weeks Friday we fly out for the first time this year .. yippee :)
One of the joys for me in Turkey is laying in the sun listening to the music on my MP3 player. So I am sitting here preparing for that time by loading the MP3 player with new tracks, and organising into various categories. My newest category is 'Covers by other performers that are - possibly - better than the original by the performer/songwriter', down below are my first 12 (I did try to get it down to a top ten but failed:-\).
Do you have any personal recommendations that i should add to this list for loading on the MP3?
Without you - Nilsson (Orig. Badfinger)
All the yound dudes - Mott the hoople (David Bowie)
Days - Kirstie McColl (Kinks/Ray Davis)
Young Gifted and Black - Bob and Marcia (Nina Simone)
I fought the law - Clash (Crickets)
Bring it on Home to me - Animals (Sam Cooke)
Ruby Tuesday - Melanie (Rolling Stones)
For the Good times - Perry Como (Kris Kristofossen)
The day before you came - Blancmange (ABBA)
Will You still love me tomorrow - Amy Winehouse (Carole King)
Jealous Guy - Roxy Music (John Lennon)
Out of Time - Chris Farlowe (Rolling Stones)
(The last track being the greatest British soul record EVER ;)
-
Ruby Tuesday - Rod Stewart is the best version for me
-
Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy (Sting)
Strange Little Girl - Tori Amos (The Stranglers)
Only Love Can Break Your Heart - St Etienne (Neil Young)
Eloise - The Damned (Barry Ryan)
Suspicious Minds - Fine Young Cannibals (Elvis the Pres)
Just my opinion that they are better than the originals of course, but they are :D

Thanks everyone for your contribution, whilst I already have most of the tunes listed above in my MP3, I've now logged many of those into the 'Cover that is possibly better than the original performer / songwriter' category. Especially Susan Boyle's fantastic performance of Wild Horse. Another masterpiece from Jagger/Richards.

Sorry Sleuth Hallelujah was written and sung by Leonard Cohen(best version) next best has got to be Jeff Buckley, will admit I as yet have not heard KD Langs version.

Yes some forum members are not taking this subject seriously. Scunner, Badger and JulesP should all be made to sit on the CBF Naughty Step .. and while I'm on how about Judge Dread's version of the classic Come Outside by Mike Sarne and Wendy Richards. I'll walk over to the step then.... ;)
