Wayne Rooney has been banned for two games after his foul mouthed tirade on Saturday. He is appealing this verdict.
It saddens me to see what football is now coming to, when a player scores a hat trick and is so elated he celebrates by shouting four letter words at the camera, during a live match when families are watching.
Rooney has it all.. 200k per week. A wonderful life. A wife (who has forgiven him his transgressions) a son, fabulous homes wonderful holidays and a Manager who defends him to the hilt no matter what he does.
Obviously he now feels he can do and say anything because he has always been forgiven and always will be. He is beyond reproach, he has been so spoilt he feels he cannot and should not be punished for anything he does.
I suppose once he appeals his ban, this will be lifted.
We look back now at great players of the past, no matter who they played for, with admiration. How will today's young generation look back at Rooney? :(

You can take the boy out of the council house but you wont take the council house out of the boy
-
Let's hope that every player who is heard swearing at televised football matches gets banned for two matches and hopefully more if they do it again. It is directly and entirely because of this that children swear like troopers in the Sunday morning matches in the parks of Britain.
-
I could never understand how any player is allowed to swear at referee and get away with it.
-
Or cause a referee to feel threatened enough to feel the need to walk backwards, it is totally outrageous. Once again, things that widely and regularly blight our national game that could be eradicated in five minutes.
-
The answers in his pocket, it wouldnt take too many to get sent off before they got the message
-
I agree, but this isn't about premiership players swearing down TV cameras, it is everywhere - even a non-carded free kick award is greeted with an F-off as a bare minimum. If the rule is to be that once on the pitch, swearing is a red card offence, how many games will be over at twenty past three :D
-
I think you will find he has been charged and he has until the 5th(tomorrow) to appeal, no ban yet! link http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/article-23938339-rooney-charged-for-outburst.do :o ;)
-
All the sadder given his footballing display prior to the incident:(
-
Time the F.A. got tough with these Prima Donna's I think the threat of a 6 match ban and 100k fine for any footballer swearing at the ref or at the camera would soon stop them.
I also don't agree about the council house thing. Lots of footballers came from council house backgrounds, but did not behave like Rooney. However, these footballers all had something between their ears other than fresh air.
-
As a CHAP - Council House And Proud - I cannot find any endearing qualities in Rooney at all. His latest outburst of swearing is nothing new. You don't have to be much of a lip reader to see what comes out of his foul mouth in every game. It is alway particularly forceful when he directs against the referee, which also appears to happen every game. He is the worst kind of role model for kids and adults alike playing the great game.
Besides which i have never forgiven him for not only his p!ss poor performance in the last World Cup, but also his insulting behaviour to the England supporters at the match, and those at home.
And what he get from this is not a two match ban, but another two match 'break', to add to the international 'break' he is getting in June, which are all of course to added to the breaks he has already had from the game in the last yearr in Camp Nike, Bahrain and Cheshire.[:(!]
That''s better rant over :)
-
I agree with Jacqui, Rooney deserves all he gets. I also agree that Tinkermans comments are very offensive. I lived in a council house and many of my friends did as well. Most people of my age did.[:(!]
-
Not yet banned but it's looking good! I hope when his appeal is thrown out he gets an extra game ban. Foul mouthed thug.
-
Talking about bans - have a look at this in real time and tell me if you were the linesman and saw this (34min.22secs) that you wouldn't have sent the guy off. So many Forest fans saying it wasn't a dangerous challenge but I think the linesman got it spot on. I played football to a reasonable standard and if I'd seen that one coming I would have been worried for my legs.

-
No question - wreckless and highly dangerous tackle which warranted a red card.
-
As I thought at the time, this isn't a bad tackle but will always result in a red card these days.
-
Horrible potentially career ending tackle, so the red is well deserved.
-
But isn't it strange that no careers were ended (that I recall) in the days of Norman Hunter and Chopper Harris?
-
I sincerely hope that children in Sunday matches in the parks of Britain do not attempt to tackle in the manner which Chris Cohen did.
-
This one did Scunner:
http://www.mightyleeds.co.uk/players/collins5.htm
""We had been hanging on to our aggregate lead when Italian full-back Poletti scythed me down with a terrible challenge. The pain was agonising and I knew immediately that my leg was badly broken."
Jack Charlton: "I remember it very vividly - Bobby was lying there, the referee wanted to move him off the park, and the Turin players were trying to bundle him off. I wouldn't let them move him; I knew that if Bobby Collins wouldn't get up, he must have something broken. I stood over him, whacking one Italian and punching another to keep them back, until eventually the referee realised that Bobby must be seriously hurt and called for a stretcher.""
-
A wild challenge but it does show how important it is that referees should have video evidence that they can review immediately after the incident.
-
Not sure I agree with video evidence with this type of tackle as slow motion dilutes the danger in it. It shows he got the ball and only minimal contact with the Leeds player - so does that make it acceptable?
-
The answer to that is, "it used to".
-
i think a lot more players would be sent off for swearing, but most of the players,
in the premier league are foriegners[spell]and referees can't understand them lol
-
Maybe it did - but the rules are quite clear these days. If a player goes into a tackle using excessive force then he runs the risk of a red card.
As for Roon the loon - I bet Man City are pleased ;-)
-
Well, just for the sake of a good argument, "the rules are quite clear" and "runs the risk of" are wholly incompatible in the same sentence!

My interpretation Scunner - this is the actual FIFA rule:
He was sent of for rule 109, excessive force:
"Using excessive force" means that the player has far exceeded the necessary
use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent.
... A player who uses excessive force must be sent off
-
Ok but still not "quite clear" as you claimed - it still comes down to personal interpretation of what might or might not be excessive force.

It always will be - even if they have video replays it will be down to 'personal interpretation'.
The rule IS clear though - if the official thinks he sees 'excessive force' being used then he MUST give a red card.
Clear as mud m'lud!
:)

As i said 5 years ago,and finally convinced Stoop :DRooney is an arrogant thug ,but a two match ban while swearing at a camera shoved in his face while some refs let players off for swearing at them,i just dont know.
There must be more consistant understanding of what is acceptable language on the pitch, one person cant get away with when it is directed to officials but is still picked up on tv while others like Rooney get banned.
Personally i would ban all players for this sort of behavior for 3 games fine them three weeks wages ,give the money to the real heroes fund in the hope of bringing these arrogant conceited overpaid little boys down a peg.
-
but Rooneys probably the biggest culprit for swearing at referees..?
-
M.United have accepted the charge by the F.A. but not the ban on Rooney and will appeal it.
If the F.A. find the appeal is frivolous they will ban him for a further (third) game.
So what is the betting he will get away with it?
-
Where did the respect campaign go????
Rooney has shown he has no respect. For his team, the officials, the fans, Women,
and his wife.
I,m sure that no player needs to grab the camera and swear at the watching public.
If taking your shirt off is a booking then this surely deserves a Ban.
-
It will probably be reduced to one game and he will play against Man City.
I hope it goes up to three though. No need for him to say that into the camera.
-
Most players swear on the pitch, but I think swearing directly at the camera in the knowledge he had a huge audience should be punished, there is also the case of the foreign players that swear, what happens there, do we get multi lingual refs,!, that was not a display of passion from Rooney, it was aggression, as was the elbow the other week, which also deserved a ban, but I also think he will get off lightly or all together.

Hi, not been on here for ages due to work but this seems a topical issue and everyone, correctly, has an opinion. So do I.
Have to agree with the sentiment of the emails posted so far (i.e. he should not have sworn), but, there has to be a but, he has offerred a written apology - albeit it was written by his HR rep.
I'm no Ronney fan or of Manure (being a Citeh fan I would love him to miss the semi final) but I think that this should have been handled better. What did Sky think would happen with the camera on the pitch ... Camera + Rooney = trouble. Even R5L suggested that the microphone should have been turned down/ 30 sec delay etc. etc.
No bring him in, re=focus his attention with the directive of "from now on you will etc", or get a Manure or FA bollicking/ fine/ ban and offer a verbal apology and lets move on.
If we don't, we'll have people taking guns to the training grounds and shooting at people won't we !!.
-
Simple... stop the waffle... ban him.. he wont do it again.

agree completely stoop, he is a talented footballer, but also a foul mouthed thug, should have been banned for the rest of the season.

For current rules visit www.fifa.com, Laws of the Game. The rules now include "Decision 4", which says: "A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play" The quote below is from Questions and Answers, (Additional INSTRUCTIONS for Referees). FIFA has broadened definition by saying that "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
Looks pretty clear to me, no interpretation required, the player walks.

So Sky or any other T.V. company must be aware that Rooney, a grown man, should not be filmed from the touchline because, being Rooney, a special case, he will probably swear!! Even though he has scored a hat trick and the obvious thing is to get close up and see and hear him celebrate. Gerrard kissed the camera when he scored. Rooney said F...ing What!! He is not a child, he is a man earning a quarter of a million pounds per week to kick a football, must we all be aware that Rooney has to be treated with kid gloves because he cannot control himself.... God what is the world coming to?:( :o
-
It isn't Sky's fault! Even MOTD made the decision to show it (more than once) without bleeping it out on Saturday night. I do hope they did so for the Sunday A.M. showing. I do wonder what 'accepting the charge but not the punishment' might mean. Could it be when someone can't find a flash lawyer or any other way to deny the evidence of the crime but still thinks thinks they are being picked on?
If I did that on a live news link for example on the street, I guess I'd find the punishment to be somewhat more severe than two days off work.

Agreed Tinx, along with your own Cashley Cole. ;)
-
Oh well.... 3 match ban it is then....
Keep your mouth shut... no ban
dont appeal 2 match ban..
Dont learn to keep your mouth shut..
3 match ban.
He will never learn.
-
I have a feeling he will. It is a shame it happened but this is a clear signal of what will happen to players who swear on the football field. I'm sure many people think it is a problem with Rooney but it is a problem in football. Hopefully this is a turning point.
-
The most logical point so far Keith, like:D
-
if you think what a footballer says on tv can infuence me one little bit you can F~*# off!
:D
-
Barry it is still a two match ban.
-
Sorry miss-informed..
So.... although he pleaded guilty, his appeal was not deemed frivolous..
Well....F*** me
-
Could be doing with a couple of yellow cards here methinks :o
-
apologies H it's watching too much television,I have reprimanded myself! ;)
-
Rooney will never change. Instead of him being contritional, showing some remorse and taking his punishment he is still protesting and saying he apologised and is being punished. Where would the world be if wrong doing could be solved by an apology?
His public image is at an all time low, but he is too thick to realise if he had of shown some regret, admitted he was wrong (and not just a flippant and meanless apology) took his two match ban like a man and not a petulant spoiled brat he would have started to built bridges and put himself higher in the public view.
I am really surprised that M.U. do not get someone in to mentor him and teach him some life skills.
-
Right result.
