Title: How much to fit an Immersion Heater
Post by: SteveJ on April 18, 2011, 15:04:36 PM
I'm considering getting an immersion heater installed so that we can hot water even when the Sun doesn't have his hat on. Does anyone have any idea of the approximate costs, the disruption involved and perhaps a recomendation of a professional company who could do this work for me?

Regards, SteveJ

If your tank already has a fitting for it, its fairly easy - the hard bit is wiring it, many people simply have the cable hanging onto a balcony and just plug it into an outside socket, but if you can't do that then it would mean running the cable down and through a drilled hole into your house - I would not think it would cost much for an electrician to do that.
If your tank does not have a fitting then its a new tank I'm afraid.the only definite price I can give is an immersion element costs about 35 TL.
We just had new tanks and panels installed and the company that did it were..... oops lost his card, but he is right across from the DIY (B&Q) shop , between Migros and the Otogar. Usually has solar panels next to his shop.

We bought our immersion from Eren Spot and they also got it fitted. Can't remember how much but it wasn't expensive. It was put in a cupboard in our hall where the washing machine is.

Steve if it is just for showers you can get an electric shower fitted for about 130tl, we do not use the emersion heater anymore because of the time it takes to heat up and the cost, for either job I would reccomend Bayram if you want his contact details let me know

Thanks for the advice. It's primarily for showers so perhaps Mark's suggestion is the way forward.

Do you get much sun in the cupboard, or have you had your solar panels adapted?:D

I agree with Mark...the immersion heater is ok, but you have to remember to put it on (& more importantly turn it off), it heats the whole (non insulated) tank, so works out quite expensive.
You can buy instant hot water boilers similar to those in the UK...starting at about 550TL for a Bosch one, though I have no idea how much to fit. Assuming they run of electric rather than gas?
Has anyone had one fitted?  Are they any good or expensive to run?

Mark - when we first came over to look at apartments in 2005 we stayed at Cenk & Olga's place (Camelia) and in our apartment they had 2 showers one electric for winter and one normal for when the water was warm in the tank.

That has always put us off as we have a small bathroom and 2 showers would take up valuable space!

Am I being thick or is that still what they do?

Ian

All he do is fit the shower unit in the shower cubicle, the pipe from the mixer tap goes in the unit and then out to the shower head, most of the time we do not use it on electric, so we just leave the unit switched off the water still runs round it but unless it is switched on does not heat the water, it has 3 heat settings. so just takea a square foot space on the wall, a cable to a trip switch all neatly done.

Hi Mark would like to get that done too, as sometime if we have showers at night the water is not very hot in the morning.
Does this guy speak English?

Its normal to have a shower fitted this way here, any electrician will do and shower units are inexpensive

I was told the tanks are double skinned with insulation between the layers.  I hope that's true.

Yes I think they are insulated.  I had to have the large cylinder tank replaced last year and when I looked at the old tank, after they took it off the roof of course, it appeared to have a layer of polystyrene type insulation under the skin.  I guess they have to be really because in the winter it would cost a fortune to heat an uninsulated tank.

Yes, thanks for that.  I always hoped it was true, though hard to tell when peering up at the roof, eh!

That's good news - I just assumed because of the time it takes to heat the water up & the cost in the winter, it was uninsulated  :-\

I paid 100tl for mine supplied and fitted - the man was organised by Vartur Estate Agents for me (now Century 21.  Quick and no mess - the basthroom wiring looks a bit dodgy but it is switched on and off at the fuse box - I like hot water for cleaning and washing up as well as a shower - whole tank heats in about an hour and stays warm for ages.  haven't found it very expensive to use either.

I am glad I paid the extra £12 to not have dodgy wiring and have a proper shower switch, not switching it on at the fuse box.
