Just heard on the Channel 5 News that if you announce on social networking sites your holiday plans and dates, it will invalidate your home insurance. Does not surprise me as the Insurance Companies will do anything to get out of paying a claim. [:(!] Channel 5 were interviewing people at airports and a lot of them had announced on Facebook etc., they were going on holiday. It also seems that children, without their parents knowledge give out holiday information on line, which will still invalidate their parents Home Insurance. It seems that a lot of thieves are searching the net looking for people who will be going on holiday.
It's worth taking note of this news. ;)

Sorry, but it's a sign of the times these days and anyone who broadcasts when their property is going to be unoccupied is just asking to be robbed.
-
When we o off on holiday we cancel the paper and the milk. We may even have some lights on a timer to ive the impression that the property is occupied. Then what do we do announce on facebook and other forums like this one we are off to the sun for a number of weeks.
I can fully understand why insurance companies get upset.

Anyone who cancels the papers and the milk is simply broadcasting that they will be away!
-
how many people have papers and milk now anyway?

I have the paper every day and have milk all the time ;)
-
I do agree though - broadcasting it on FB or wherever is asking for trouble.
-
If we are going to be burgled, I'd rather it happened when we are a way. ;)

Another thing many people do which surprises me, they put name tags on their cases when flying out from the Uk with their address on, so any dishonest baggage handlers can tip the nod to friends that people are away.

and the stupid people who carry suitcases out of their house...

Friends of ours got to the airport for their holiday flight and immediately realised they hadn't got their passports. Their taxi had already gone so they immediately got another back home. Imagine their surprise to find taxi driver no.1 in their living room, rifling through their drawers [:o]
You certainly can't be too careful.

disgusting that people behave in this manner rifling through peoples possesions "get yourselves a job like the rest of us have to" even more disgusting is the insurance companies taking your money and not wanting to pay out, i am currently fighting a medical claim that my medical insurance does not want to pay out for they seem to think i took myself off to hospital for tests i did not need, no doctor lets you have tests you dont need and they are blind to the fact that the results say i need treatment so frustating!

We only put our home address on when we are flying home - we put the hotel/destination on when flying out.

Insurance companies have every right not to pay out if their clients do not look after their posessions. Insurance is not there to provide replacement for items that might be lost or stolen becasue the owner can't be bothered to look after them - that's the reason we all pay so much!

I once had a party in my 20's - newly married - new furniture. Everyone smoked in those days (70's) and the following morning we noticed a burn on our new settee.
Filled in a claim form and one question was "did ignition take place?' and in brackets it explained "was there a flame?" - I honestly answered NO - result - they wrote back and said 'sorry no ignition - not covered under 3rd party fire and theft.
Never trusted insurance companies since that point.
Ian
Ps never had another party!

Surely if you don't cancel you are doing just that! No win situation:D

Everybody at your workplace knows you are on holiday and the same for your partner, all your kids friends know you are on holiday and so do their parents, everybody in the vicinity knows you are on holiday as does the postman, milkman, dustbin men,so not telling your friends and family on a secure Facebook is nonsense.
-
Hi Scunner, what if I cancel the milk but keep the paper delivery. ;)

It will make no difference what any of us think, our opinions will not count. The Insurance Companies have now found a wonderful way of not paying out on claims, and you can be sure they will use it.:(

Don't you think 28 pints of milk on the doorstep aslo gives it away[?]
-
I was joking but with a point to it all - if insurance companies are looking for get outs (and they are) is cancelling your papers actually irresponsibly giving information to your newsagent and paper boy - and if your nice paper boy told his not so nice brother or mates, did you cause the break in? I'd say no less than telling your friends on Facebook that you are in Torremolinos - at least you know the people in your facebook list, or as I tell my kids, you should do.
