Following on from the banning of web sites with letters that spell words like anal, today I received this.
This is very worrying and would I would urge you all in a world that is going mad to sign the petition.
Türkiye: internet sansürüne hayir!
http://www.avaaz.org/tr/no_internet_censorship/?vlen
Dear friends across Turkey,
Our government is trying to censor the Internet. The BTK is pushing through a new regulation that would force every single Internet user in Turkey to submit to extensive content filtering when they go online. Let's build the biggest petition in Turkish history and force the BTK to abandon internet censorship!
Our government is trying to censor the Internet. A new regulation would force every single Internet user in Turkey to submit to extensive content filtering when they go online.
The BTK is pushing regulations that would force each of us to choose between one of four Internet filters that block us from accessing hundreds of words and websites. No computer in the country will have access to the Internet without signing up for this censorship. And, to top it off -- the government will not release the list of websites blocked by each filter.
The new system is a violation of our right to freedom of expression and access to information, and it has absolutely no legal basis under Turkish law. The BTK is under enormous pressure already, facing backlash from across the country. We can unite the opposition -- creating the largest petition in Turkey's history against Internet censorship and for freedom of information. Sign the petition now, and forward it to everyone:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/no_internet_censorship/?vl
BTK's Internet censorship violates the European Convention on Human Rights and the Turkish constitution. And yet they're still trying to force it through.
The BTK claims they are providing families with an important service, and that if we choose the "standard" filter, our Internet access won't change. But this is clearly a lie to generate support for censorship. The filters are already readily available for download by anyone who wishes to install them -- this regulation will make filters mandatory. The BTK would have total control over which internet sites are blocked under the filters and could add or remove sites without our knowledge -- giving them the power to ban thousands of new websites without any good reason.
We can stop the BTK from taking away our right to freely access information on the internet. Click below to sign the petition and we will deliver it in a massive national march opposing internet censorship on Sunday:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/no_internet_censorship/?vl
The wave of democracy movements that is building across the planet has been spawned online -- and proven that our ability to stay informed, express ourselves freely, and communicate with each other is critical to our ability to tackle all the other pressing issues facing our country and our world. If we fight this regulation and win, it will be a victory for every other issue we care about. Let's seize this moment!
With hope and determination,
Ozlem, Emma, Mia, Rewan and the whole Avaaz team

Taken from the Reporters without Borders web site
Under new regulations announced by the BTK on 22 February and due to take effect on 22 August, Internet users will have to choose between one of four Internet filtering options: family, children, domestic or standard. One of these filters will have to be installed on every computer for it to have online access. The list of websites blocked by each filter is classified.
"The BTK is not fooling anyone when it claims to be rendering a service to Internet users by giving them a choice between a lot of restrictions and fewer restrictions," Reporters Without Borders said. "This measure is a complete violation of both the European Convention on Human Right and Turkey's own constitution. Everyone should be guaranteed unrestricted access to the Internet."

I find it hard to understand why this is not many many more pages than it is. Everyone who reads CBF uses the internet and if this law comes into force then you will find access here in Turkey highly restricted.
A lot of you don't live here but holiday here and it will affect you as well. Internet restrictions are a step backwards and are against the Turkish constition. This is another step by the AKP to control peoples freedom of information!
Hopefully thousands of you have signed the petition but just not had the time to post "done" on this topic.
If you haven't signed then please do it's simple and people power works as has been proven in the past.
Thanks
-
Loads of people I know have signed the petition Fi but haven't said so on this forum, myself included.
Anyway...done :)
-
I think I am right in saying as a sticky this item will stay at the top of this particular discussion forum.
However one advantage of posting on here that you have "signed" is that it keeps it visible as an active topic drawing it to the attention of anyone who may have missed it.
It will be interesting to see what news coverage this topic gets in the Turkish (and overseas) press tomorrow (Monday) after todays demonstrations across Turkey.
-
Oh, and it motivates others to sign too :)
Did you know that already several thousand web sites are already blocked to those of us in Turkey.

i've just tried to get into my hotmail account and cannot. The guy here in the internet cafe in Fethiye says 'problem all of Turkey' is anyone else having problems???
-
Done !
-
Lizdev.....Perhaps you have been censored:D
-
Signed up myself. Although, being a sceptic, I wouldn't be surprised if the decision is irrevocable and already in place - just waiting for some beaurocrat to press the button.
-
When it say you will have a choice of four filters does this mean a choice for four search engines??
-
No it means a choice of filters - the lists of sites blocked by the filter you choose will be secret
According to a report prepared by Freedom House, a Washington-based human rights organization, over 5,000 websites were blocked in Turkey as of July 2010, and the number has since risen. For two years, those banned sites included YouTube, Google'''s Internet video platform. "It's the job of the family to regulate a child's Internet use.
This paves way to censorship," Ozge Ozkan, a 23-year-old Istanbul law student, said of the BTK's proposed system of state filters. [7]
The filters are "family," "child," "domestic" and "standard." The criteria by which websites will be filtered will be determined by the BTK.
Circumventing these measures will be considered a crime and anyone doing so or attempting to do so will face heavy fines. Many websites are expected to be blocked by the filters irrespective of their content...
...Under the new rules, the BTK would have total control over which internet sites are blocked under the filters and could add or remove sites without users' knowledge, giving it the power to ban thousands of websites without any good reason, the petition said.
It questioned the BTK's claim that they are providing families with an important service, and added that the filters are already available for download by anyone who wishes to install them. [5]

After the 22nd August 2011 if you live in Turkey you probably won't even be able to access this web site let alone sign the petition to stop censorship of the Internet that will deny people the right to access information and freedom of expression.
If you haven't already please sign the petition and let us know here to keep this topic active, thanks

From the Hurriyet paper today, an update on internet filtering.
It has been put back to Nov 22nd and two out of the four flitering packagaes have been removed.
IF it is to be believed and goes ahead, the two filtering packages to be offered are 'family' and 'child'. The report says, 'Those who decide against using a filter will continue with their normal Internet access'.
We wait to see what does come into force on Nov 22nd.
Perhaps the online petition has been a help.
-
Thanks for this news Col - here is the link to the article. I am sure the petition along with other forms of peaceful protest made a difference.

Looks like CBF made the cut :D
-
This week internet subscribers in Turkey will be asked if they want to sign up to "safe" as in censored internet browsing!
According to the report on Click on BBC World there is an option to continue with internet browsing as normal!
Although there will be severe penalties for anyone caught bypassing the new censorship measures so it begs the question is internet browsing as normal really an option [?]
-
Also, what about the Brits using VPNs to hide their IP...
-
If its as simple as I have read it from my text messages etc from Turkcell, and the news sites ive visited, If I wish I can have free censorship or, I can just carry on as I am
I presume the penalties for violating the secure sites are for those people who try to hack into the free secure sites
